Story 17: "No Place Safe"
Although she was taught to be afraid of Coal Ridge, Becca fell in love with the charming small town. When she found a similarly charming man who had the same ideals, she felt like she had it all. But as secrets started being revealed, everything began to unravel.
Sometimes the harshest lessons strike closest to home, and she was about to learn that even in the comfort of her hometown, no place is really safe.

Among other things, I'm a writer--with some published experience--whose been mostly quiet for the past few decades, mostly because I let life get in the way. I've long had a creative outlet at the gaming table and recently found another when I started building a website. With this new outlet also came inspiration. Right now I'm working primarily on a series of short stories that has received some very positive feedback, so I'm sharing. No Place Safe - Chuck Sperati
Dedication
Coal Ridge is based on Ohio's Finest Village. It was a great place to grow up and continues to be a remarkable community to which I enjoy returning to see friends and family. For those who live there, take a moment, look around, and be wary of the shadows.
Preface
A series of intertwined short stories that will make you wonder where the darkness ends and the light begins. All small towns keep secrets, but in Coal Ridge when the secret gets out, it begins to feed...again.
Set in a small, somewhat geographically secluded town in the Midwest, the blue-collar people of Coal Ridge are friendly and laid back, enjoying block parties, gossip, and the simple joys that come with being a close-knit community. Because everyone knows everyone else, secrets are hard to keep, but some are so well hidden that they've been forgotten.
These short stories explore a supernatural awakening that will test the bonds of family and community.
No Place Safe
Raised in the neighboring city of Heaton, from a young age Becca Deerborne was taught to be afraid of Coal Ridge. As a child, her parents told her that was where the boogeyman lived and threatened to take her there when she misbehaved. Family and friends told ghost stories, claiming disappearances, unsolved murders, and other oddities. Around town, warnings to stay away from Coal Ridge were whispered, as if speaking them would invite the same demons.
When the one bridge that connected the two towns needed repair, the people of Heaton voted to demolish it and no resolution to rebuild was put forth.
As a teen, Becca made a friend from Coal Ridge.
It was back in 2009, when Facebook was still kinda cool. While playing a farm game she received a friend request from Melony Smith, whose profile pic had the Slytherin crest background. Bonding over the shared house and their love of the wizardly books and movies, they quickly became best friends. After dominating the farm game, they moved on from it and Facebook, finding new challenges together.
It didn’t take long for Becca to figure out that Coal Ridge was just a place like any other. More than that, she learned that it was a place
