IT STARTED WHEN JAMES missed his footing in a practice session, tripped over a wire and managed to knock himself out on Ken's amp. At least Phil assumed that was when it started because it was only after that James had begun acting strangely. At first it had been the odd time when James had seemed to phase out for a few moments, then James had become jumpy as the weirdest things. When James had shown up for the planning meeting that morning Phil had known something was very wrong.
James could look as scruffy as the rest of them if he couldn't be bothered, but today James looked as if he'd stumbled into his clothes rather than put them on, his hair was a mess, and it didn't look like he'd slept in days.
James sit,
Phil said immediately, all but pushing his friend into the nearest chair.
The fact that James cringed away from him was worrying, and the way James kept avoiding looking at him after he managed to get his band mate sitting down was even worse. Something was seriously wrong. Phil decided there and then he had to find out what it was.
You look like shit,
he said, expecting some sort of reaction, but James just sat there staring at the table. James, tell me what's going on; you haven't been yourself since the fall. Is something wrong?
James did not respond. Phil thought his friend had zoned on him for a moment, but when he reached forward to gain James's attention, James shied away again.
That's it,
Phil said firmly, I'm calling the others and telling them not to come, this meeting is cancelled.
As he pulled his phone out James stood up.
Sit down,
Phil said a little more sharply than he had meant to.
