IMPORTANT NOTE: SHADES OF CHAOS gallops along after the grand events in THE LAST RIDER. To keep spoilers at bay (and trust me, they’re lurking around every corner like mischievous imps), keep this novella on the shelf until you have dived into the waters of THE LAST RIDER.

    CHAPTER 1

THE ROOM REEKED OF stale cigarettes, cheap whiskey and sweat. He didn’t know who was paying for that sleazy dungeon of a motel. Rumor was, regulars of the Castle Crypt bar had access to the motel rooms across the street if they showed a receipt for a minimum of eighty dollars of drinks that same night, but the sordid ambiance hinted at a darker subtext.

His nostrils flared as they picked up the most dangerous scent in the room. He could barely make out the woman’s figure in the shadows, but he wasn’t so wasted that he couldn’t tell she’d taken off her clothes and was eager to start, with or without him.

Come to think of it, that was the thing giving him pause. He didn’t have nearly enough to drink before he followed this strung-out shifter chick he’d just met in a seedy dive bar frequented by depraved supernaturals and rogue magics.

He remained with his back pinned to the door, struggling to get his jumbled thoughts in order.

She walked to him and pressed herself against him while her hands fumbled with his belt. He reached out to feel her up, see if he could make himself give a damn.

She was a werewolf... no, scratch that. She was a badger or a wolverine or some other such hideous critter. Hell, maybe he had it all wrong and she wasn’t in the shifting business at all. Tall and curvy, with an excellent rear end. Definitely hit the gym regularly. Probably fancied herself a real badass who could hold her own in any fight.

The fact that he couldn’t remember her name just sweetened the deal. This way she was little more than a smoking-hot question mark. Nothing too specific or full of complications. She knew why she was there, and he wasn’t confused about his part either. In that sense, they were in sync.

I prefer the lights on, she whispered as she flicked her tongue at the base of his neck.

Echoes of the gory battle against the dark forces of Chronus, just weeks ago, zipped through his mind. He could still taste the metallic tang of blood on his tongue, feel the biting chill of the earth splitting open beneath his boots.

The close brush with mortality had rattled his core. He, an immortal shadow warrior over two millennia old, had faced his own end. He’d stood on the precipice of oblivion, his eternal existence teetering on a knife’s edge. That chilling realization echoed in his head. The memory was a vicious specter, wrapping its icy tendrils around his heart and squeezing tight. He was tired, a bone-deep weariness he’d never known before.

He shuddered and forced the memories away with an effort of will. He reached behind him and flicked the light switch on.

The woman’s eyes blinked a couple of times under the dim light before they focused on him, filled with lust. He roughly grasped her hands.

    She
