Afdhere Jama was born in Somalia and grew up in the Mogadishu of the 1980s. When he was a teenager he moved to the United States. He was the editor of Huriyah, the first magazine for LGBT Muslims, which was in publication (both in English and Arabic) between 2000 and 2010. His other books include Being Queer and Somali: LGBT Somalis At Home and Abroad, Illegal Citizens: Queer Lives in the Muslim World, and Queer Jihad: LGBT Muslims on Coming Out, Activism, and the Faith. He lives in New York.
