About this ebook
Kyliah and her fellow captive are held inside a cave while their rescuers rush to find them. As time trickles away, her Merrow instincts pull her survival instincts to the forefront. The water can help her, but it will kill him. Saving her strength is the easy option, but can she live with the result? A Core Flame can't survive near water and the cave is flooding. There's no end in sight and working together might just be the very last thing they do.

THE MERROW
Kyliah shrank back against the blistering rock, even as her scales sizzled and curled into her skin, a futile attempt to escape the sickening gust of steam that hissed from the open-air vents around her. She bit through her lip, blood sluggishly dribbling past parched lips that were much too dry for a creature of her kind. Her body remained frozen in motion, pressed as far back away from the cave entrance as possible, even though it'd already proven fruitless with her captors.
There wasn’t enough water. There wasn’t anywhere near enough water for the bare minimum of what she needed to survive and with each shrinking puddle and burning stone, her chances worsened, the inevitable end beckoning with its looming claws. Some wretched soul had thought to extract water from an underwater cave, sealing it off with the kind of dark magic that promised hellish torture in Death’s Courts, whenever their inevitable demise occurred.
For her, that wouldn’t matter. Rescue or revenge, it would all be far too late.
They didn't care that she was Merrow. They didn't care that she was a living creature. To them, it was all a sick, twisted game to satisfy equally twisted desires.
A pretty fish, they'd called her, too small to eat, too small to breed, but good for a few laughs—or target practice.
For them.
Her rescue beacon had died out days ago and there wasn't the barest hint of a sign of rescue anywhere on the horizon. Instead, she was left in a cave that was slowly cooking her alive.
Peeling her scales from her exhausted, heatsick body and burning through every bit of moisture that it could leech out of her. The steam should've helped.
Her own blood, should've helped.
And it didn't.
Instead, her head throbbed and her magic waned. More than magic was required to get her out of such a spot. Not that her weakened body could do much more without some sort of sustenance.
Time had slowed to an indeterminable trickle. She couldn’t remember when, how or why. Just that it was all happening and taking far too long to bring about her end. The hopelessness in her belly had long since sunk into her very bones.
She would die here and no one would know.
Rustles and shouts in the distance drew her attention, cutting through the haze of her chaotic pain. Words filtered through, dozens of angry, hateful things, as her captors jeered and mocked the newest addition to her now-shared prison.
They threw a man into the dark opening of the cave's mouth. A bruised and beaten thing with plenty of glistening, poison-sick blood, dripping down his face and pooling in the crevices and cracks of his carved-up body. He wasn’t meant to survive, if they’d thrown him in there with her. There was no way
