A Touch Of Wrath - Arizona Tape

    One

    Demi

There was nothing that attracted demons like sin.

I inhaled deeply to get a whiff of the simmering anger from a couple of humans passing me by. They seemed in a bad mood and I could smell the spice of their sinful thoughts in the air. In my early days on Earth, I’d have snatched their brewing wrath right out of their aura and devoured it in an instant but I wasn’t a desperate youngling anymore.

There were better ways for demons to get fed.

I let the fighting couple pass and tapped the window of the gift shop to get the cashier’s attention. Dinner, I mouthed, tapping my watch.

Bram checked the large clock above his head and gave me a thumbs-up as he locked his register. The people in the queue grumbled and complained, turning their auras a delicious shade of red. Sin really was everywhere and a museum attracted the right kind of tourists that made for delectable snacks.

To nobody’s surprise, Bram couldn’t resist swiping his hand through their auras, gathering the residue of the wrath. He snorted the red powder from his finger and it immediately added a pep in his step.

Hi, Demi. I’m starving, he announced happily. Where are we eating today?

I don’t know. I’m bored of Hellfire Grill.

There’s Tine Is Precious down the road, you like their salads. Or Hot Horns. I so love their wrath chicken wings, he suggested as we left the museum.

I shook my head. Nah, I want to try something new. Have you ever been to The Forked Tail? I heard that’s good.

We can do that, he agreed.

Happily chattering, we made our way through the mass of colourful humans. Most of them were visitors, some co-workers. It was rare to have humans that wanted to work in a place like this but some oddballs liked customer service. I wasn’t sure why they’d want to deal with grumpy, impatient, ungrateful people but everyone had their own reasons.

My stomach grumbled again, a reminder that I was hungry. I knew if I didn’t feed soon, that rumble would turn into a ravenous hunger that simple morsels of sin wouldn’t be able to satisfy. I needed something more substantial.

I think I can smell the Forked Tail from here, Bram noted happily. What is that, wrath?

I sniffed, taking in the smells in the air, and my lips tugged up into a smile. Smells like it.

We blended effortlessly with the crowd. Most humans seemed totally oblivious to the gangs of demons and groups of angels roaming the streets. Colourful auras promised delectable sin but I knew from experience that it wasn’t more than a sample, barely enough to whet the appetite.

Luckily, The Forked Tail was only a short walk away and not too busy, but busy enough that it wasn’t worrying. The warm rustic atmosphere of the restaurant was welcoming and promising in itself.

I chose a table near the window, pleased to have enough space and unable to hear the conversation of our neighbours. Nothing worse than noisy demons.

A server brought menus and I scanned the list, not particularly intrigued by any of the dishes.

Bram barely looked at his, already handing the menu back. I’ll have the wrath chicken burger with curly fries, extra wrath. And a beer.

The server nodded, seemingly unbothered by already taking our order, and turned to me. And for you?

I clicked my tongue as I scanned the menu. What’s the soup of the day?

    Tomato with wrath-croutons. Very lovely.

Sounds like a wrath-heavy menu. Are there any envy specials? I asked.

The waiter shook his head. No, we’re all out.

Shame. I guess I’ll go for the honeymoon-lust beef stew then. And a glass of red, whatever the chef recommends.

It’s weird that you get bored of glutton, Bram voiced once the waiter was gone. I can just eat wrath all day, every day.

And you do. You should expand your palate, I suggested. Try some new things. The other sins can be really delicious.

He shook his head. They just don’t taste as good to me.

We waited in comfortable silence for the waiter to bring our food. I let my eyes travel around the place, bemused by the signs on the wall.

If you complain about the food, the chef will yell at you.

Only a demon place could have a policy like this and not go bust.

Luckily, the service was quick and reasonable. It had to be. If demons didn’t like the food, they wouldn’t come back. A rather simple rule that humans hadn’t quite figured out how to implement themselves. They seemed to get a perverse pleasure out of finding things to complain about and subjecting themselves to below-average circumstances.

    Not me.

Oh, I see food, Bram announced, perking up immediately. He licked his lips as the server put his burger down, practically snatching it out of his hand.

I could tell the chicken contained a good amount of wrath from the red coating around it and the smell of spice it emitted. I almost regretted not getting a burger myself but the shallow bowl with beef stew looked lovely too. The savoury smell was inviting and I quickly dug my spoon into the thick gravy, stirring it to mix it with the strands of pink lust on top. A different kind of spicy aroma filled the air and my stomach grumbled in response.

One bite confirmed the talents of the chef. The beef melted in my mouth and the soft vegetables had retained some structure to them. A lovely heartwarming stew that was perfect in every way, except the lack of spice. Whatever honeymoon lust they were using, it wasn’t nearly as potent as I’d have liked. It certainly wasn’t going to still my hunger.

I flagged a passing server. Excuse me but my stew isn’t spicy at all. I can barely taste the honeymoon lust.

Do you want to make a complaint to the chef? he asked, looking rather excited about the prospect.

My gaze flicked to the warnings on the wall and I conjured a smile. You know what, it’s fine. I’m not looking for a fight.

I finished the stew without issue. It was delightful and full-bodied, it just lacked nourishment. To make up for the small portion of sin, I’d grab something on the way to my flat, or I’d snack on some humans in passing.

The server took our empty plates away and returned with two bowls of ice cream.

We didn’t order that, I pointed out.

It’s on the house, to make up for the lack of lust in your stew, he explained, placing the desserts in front of us. One is spiced with wrath, the other with lust.

Bram didn’t question it and dove into without protest, shovelling the ice cream in his mouth by the spoonfuls. The hunger of a new demon.

He was practically done before I’d taken my first bite. The dessert held a nice, warming spice that paired well with the cold ice cream. It was a lovely combination and the lust tingled my tongue, dulling the edge of my hunger.

    That was fantastic, Bram sighed.

It was. I don’t understand why they sent it though.

    An apology for your dish.

That makes no sense. Demons don’t do apologies. I glanced at the kitchen doors, trying to look through the round windows. Was it to placate us? Trick us? Or just an unusual demon who liked being unpredictable?

I rose from my seat, annoyed with the whole situation. If the server reported the lack of honeymoon lust in my stew, the chef should’ve done something about it instead of sending a random dessert.

What are you doing? Bram questioned.

I’m going to have a word with the chef, I rose from my seat, determined to find out what this dessert-sending chef was up to.

I pushed through the swinging doors, stepping into the noisy kitchens. The instant heat took me off guard, I hadn’t expected it to be so
