About this ebook

Reece is a practical, orderly man, a financial analyst who considers most holiday events wasteful. But his sister coerces him into standing in line overnight for this year's must-have toy. Supplies prove smaller than expected, and Reece gets trampled in the resulting stampede. Toy store manager Angel tends to Reece's wounds. When Angel discovers Reece's cynical attitude, he invites Reece to spend Christmas Eve with him. Over the course of the day, Angel shows Reece what Christmas means to him. With Angel's guidance, maybe Reece can finally understand the joy of the holiday—and maybe even find love as well.

Joys R Us - Kim Fielding

    Joys R Us

Reece had underestimated how chilled he would get spending hours nearly immobile in the cool night air. Holding his blue fleece jacket closed at the neck, where it tended to gap a little, he shifted uncomfortably in his seated position on the concrete sidewalk. His ass was cold, right through the fabric of his jeans, and his toes were cold inside his sneakers, and his nose was running. Yes, it might have been December, but he was in California, for heaven's sake, not Minnesota. At least he'd brought gloves and tissues, although he couldn't play with his phone with the gloves on, which meant he was bored.

He sniffled and wiggled a little and snuck envious glances toward the guy at the head of the line, who'd brought a sleeping bag, camp chair, and tablet computer. That guy probably did this every year, but this was the first—and last—time Reece would camp out in front of the Megatoyz superstore.

This particular nighttime adventure had not been his idea, of course. Four days earlier, his sister Holly had invited him out for dinner. He should have known something was up right away, because Holly was a single parent who usually figured that a meal with her older brother was not worth the cost of a babysitter. But Holly had insisted, and when their pasta arrived, she took a swig of her wine and looked Reece straight in the eyes.

Aiden wants a Daredevil Danny for Christmas, she said.

    A what?

Daredevil Danny, she replied, rolling her eyes at Reece's obvious idiocy when it came to all things child-related. It's a toy. Some sort of robot thing that shoots fake lasers and rides motorcycles.

Yeah? I bet it eats batteries or breaks within two days, or it's one of those things where you have to spend a small fortune for all the accessories or it's not any good.

    Probably, she sighed.

He pointed his fork at her. I've told you before. Instead of buying him all the plastic crap you should be adding money to his college fund.

Yeah. That's just what makes an eight-year-old's eyes light up on Christmas—a college fund deposit receipt.

Fine, so he might not be thrilled now, but he'll be grateful when he hits eighteen. Do you have any idea how much tuition is going to be by the time he's old enough? Even the state schools are predicted—

"Reece. He's eight. He's had a really tough year and this is probably the last time he's going to believe that Santa is real. He wants to find a big box under the tree and rip open the wrapping
