December 25 – General Broderick’s Home – Library – 11:59 p.m.
Brody Hunter folded his wings and crouched before Dan Broderick, who slept peacefully on the couch. Dan’s parents left a few moments ago after General Broderick slipped a pillow under his son’s head, lightly stroked Danny’s blond hair, and whispered goodnight. His mother adjusted the blanket and kissed his cheek as she told him she loved him. A scene that warmed Brody’s heart.
Merry Christmas, Danny. I’m overjoyed you found your path home, but my wish is for you to heal. I’m begging you to forgive yourself for my death. It. Was. Not. Your. Fault.
Tears welled in Brody’s jade-green eyes as he lay a hand over his old dog tag, which nestled near Dan’s heart. A golden light began to glow. Please heal, brother.
Danny’s soul-deep remorse remained as palpable and intense a year and a half later as on the day Brody died. Brody worried he might never be able to assuage Dan’s agony so his heart would become whole. Nothing Brody did replaced the missing pieces. As his brother slept, Brody sank to the floor and stared at him. I’m supposed to protect you. Lord knows I try. How do I safeguard you from yourself, from your own demons?
A light glowed next to him, and a wan smile appeared regardless of the distress he felt. Hello, Mom.
Hello, my sweet boy.
Louise Hunter wrapped her arms and wings around her son and held him. Softly she sang ‘Amazing Grace’ to ease his burdens. When she finished, she said, Do not give up hope. One day Daniel will heal. Trust that his path must be what it is for the greater good.
Brody wiped his eyes as he gazed upon his beautiful mother. I understand. Doesn’t make it any easier to accept. Though, I’m glad I was chosen to be his guardian angel.
Turning back to Danny, a bittersweet memory filtered in.
Brody’s Memory – Nineteen Months Ago
May 26 – Afghanistan – Terrorist Stronghold
Master Corporal Brody Hunter crouched down behind the low wall where Major Plouffe directed him to stay. A last-minute order he disagreed with but kept his mouth shut because the major was a legendary pain in the ass if anyone so much as hinted at questioning his commands. This was a rotten position regardless of the major’s desire to ensure eyes on the primary target.
Plouffe’s tactical abilities were abysmal. He wished his CO had been there to countermand the idiot, but with a still mending ankle, Blaze was spotting for Danny and Watchdog today, and they had already moved into position. Brody blew out a breath and switched to the frequency Plouffe ordered so he could provide an ongoing sitrep to the damned major.
This is not the way I expected to spend my thirty-first birthday. Damn Plouffe for cutting our leave short for this mission. What the hell is Plouffe even doing leading this one? Glory Hog. Yeah, this is a big-time player and a feather in someone’s cap, but couldn’t he just send us and take credit after like always?
Brody hated this exposed position. He scanned, hoping if he remained still, none of the targets would notice him. His eyes landed on the main target. The covert operative, Pletcher, identified this cell as being involved in the ongoing arms thefts. When Pletcher received intel the cell would be moving, a joint op with Blaze’s and Hammer’s units was hastily cobbled together. Pletcher insisted they must strike now or chance losing them to the wind again.
Staring at the man, Brody knew Dan wouldn’t miss his target. He’s the best sniper in the world. That thought brought to mind Plouffe’s dress down of Danny last night as they prepped for the mission. Major Plouffe laid into him with gusto when Dan suggested a sniper perch with better visibility.
I swear, the major has it out for Dan. If Blaze had been there, instead of the medical tent with Patch getting a brace for his ankle, Plouffe’s tirade wouldn’t have been as full of acid. The corners of his mouth lifted as he thought; Papa Bear watches over Goldilocks.
Brody’s mind turned to the private conversations he and Baboon had over the past couple of weeks. Amazing what fresh eyes see. Nils’ opinions are logical. We’ve all been so focused on the general screwing with Danny. He’s right … we’ve had blinders on. No way a man in his position could … well, yeah, General Broderick could, but it no longer jibes he would do these things to his only son. Could Plouffe be the one behind everything? If so, why and how?
Plouffe called out, Hunter, sitrep,
interrupting Brody’s thoughts.
No movement. Eyes still on the principal target,
Brody reported. He scanned the area again and spotted someone unexpected. Wait. Christ! What the hell is he doing here?
Sitting alone in a Humvee, far from the action, Plouffe smirked. Hold.
He switched channels and depressed the button to speak. Cleared to fire.
Releasing the switch, he listened to Lieutenant Blain relaying his order to both snipers. The reports of the rifle fire caused him to laugh. Returning to the previous frequency, he ordered, Bug out, now.
Sir?
Brody asked, confused by the change in orders.
Move your ass. Get out of there now!
Plouffe had to cover his glee with a cough. This would work exactly as he planned. He changed channels again. He’s where we agreed. Take him out.
Brody shifted. How does he expect me exfil now? Dan and Watchdog have orders to shoot anything that moves—our recon identified only hostiles in the village. He duck-waddled a few paces to the left, searching for an option. Searing pain ripped through his abdomen, knocking him against the wall. He sucked in a breath as he glanced to the right. Damn! He shot me! Why? Nowhere to go, he raised his weapon, aiming for a traitor as he rose slightly.
They fired simultaneously as the traitor dove for cover. Another bullet tore through Brody’s vest, the pain agonizing. My only chance is to run for it. Brody started to rise as he glimpsed the primary target, blown away by a .50 cal.
Danny! Oh shit, he never misses!
Brody mouthed quietly as he finished rising as if in slow motion. Unable to change the course of events, knowing his death at the hand of his brother was imminent, Brody’s last living thought was one of despair. This is not only going to kill me; it will kill my brother too.
Brody blinked. He felt no pain, none whatsoever. Everything burst into bright, white light with a golden hue. He stood, viewing his earthly remains in the dirt. Where his upper torso had been, now a gaping hole, nothing left. Brody then witnessed the strangest thing.
Tiny flecks of gold began rising from all over the dusty ground. The shimmering speckles formed a stream that headed straight for him. Rooted in place, fascinated as the golden flow entered his chest, understanding dawned in Brody. Fragments of my heart. As the last speck settled into place, a sense of warmth, tranquility, and beauty infused him.
Turning away from the vision of his destroyed body, Brody observed a group of people waiting to greet him. His eyes focused on his beloved mother. She’s so radiant.
Brody, my beloved gift from God,
Louise’s melodious voice said as she opened her arms to receive him. Pulling him close, she enfolded him with her love and sighed as her son lay his head on her shoulder.
His arms went around his mother automatically and held tightly. She is much smaller than I recall. Happy tears flowed, soaking in the love he sensed as she hugged him. Time held no meaning for him, and he was unsure how long they embraced—he never wanted to let go.
Eventually, she stepped back, and he gazed into her glowing face. Not a single mark on her. With a feather-light touch, he brushed his fingers around her eye. The one which had been blackened in the only picture of her he possessed. So beautiful. Thank you for the music. I missed you, Mom.
Louise caressed Brody’s face. I’ve always been with you, my sweet boy. Always. There has not been a day I have not whispered to you, Brody.
Brody blinked. You called me Brody. Twice.
Yes, love, that’s your name, isn’t it?
Louise responded.
Grinning, Brody replied, Yes. Yes, it is.
Louise smiled sweetly. You picked a perfect name.
Her smile faded a little. It was my job to prepare you for your life. For your destiny. I’m sorry you experienced so much sorrow and pain. It was necessary.
Brody became confused. Destiny? What destiny? Is pain necessary? What is she talking about? Before he could ask, he was nearly bowled over as a smaller man engulfed him.
When he pulled back, surprise lit his features. Ripsaw?!
Beaming brightly, Ripsaw said, Hey, Brody. Been waiting for you. Would’ve liked to wait a whole hell … heck of a lot longer, though.
The change of words is what Brody picked up on. Ripsaw’s cleaned up his language. He spotted a man and a woman standing behind Ripsaw. Brody wondered who they were.
Noting the direction of Brody’s gaze, Ripsaw grinned. I’d like to introduce you to my parents. Charlotte and Richard Preston, senior.
Charlotte Preston came forward and hugged her son’s friend. What a beautiful idea you had to start the scholarship. The three of you are helping so many with your generosity.
She placed her hand over his heart. You truly have a heart of gold.
A familiar voice boomed behind him, and Brody swiftly pivoted, ending up in another bearhug. Totally overwhelmed, Brody only stared as Yankee said, Brody! It’s been too long, but not long enough.
Bewildered, Brody only nodded.
Yankee released Brody and stepped back. His face shone with a brilliant smile as he spread his wings. I have someone I want you to meet. Someone extremely special.
A sweet little girl with waist-length, golden blonde hair, sparkling emerald eyes, and the brightest smile Brody had ever seen approached him. He knelt on one knee to be at eye level with her. Who are you?
Who do you think?
A tinkle of a giggle bubbled out as her eyes danced.
Brody’s eyes opened wide. Sara? Danny’s Sara?
With a nod, Sara wrapped her arms around his neck. Thank you for taking care of my Danny.
Brody fell, ending up on his rear as her words slammed into him. Who will care for Danny now that I’m dead? Tears welled in his eyes as he peered up at Ripsaw and Yankee. He choked out, Danny. Oh, dear God, Danny. This is gonna kill him.
Louise knelt and brushed at the tears streaming down his face. Hush, all will be alright. Hush. Hamon will protect Dan.
Blinking to clear his eyes, Brody focused on his mom. Who is Hamon?
Dan’s guardian angel. At least for now.
What do you mean? Is Danny going to die?
Brody asked in a panicked voice. He couldn’t bear it if Danny died.
No one answered Brody. They only beamed as a glorious golden-haired angel with broad shoulders and enormous, pure white wings appeared. Brody gaped up at him, drawn to the angel’s eyes. They are the same piercing shade of sapphire blue as Danny’s. The lopsided grin on his face was so familiar, Brody could’ve sworn the smile was Danny’s too.
Brody’s keen eyes moved from the angel back to his mother, noting her wings for the first time. His gaze shifted to Yankee and Ripsaw, seeing wings. Turning to little Sara, he became confused. She didn’t possess wings.
Sara lay a small delicate hand on Brody’s cheek, her warmth leaving a pleasant, calming, tingling sensation. I’m not a guardian angel. I don’t protect him. We play in his dreams. I try to make him happy when he is sad.
Yankee’s face clouded and took on a sorrowful expression. He knelt near Sara as he gently rubbed her back. Tenderly he said, Poppet, time for you to go now. Your grandmothers are waiting for you.
Tears shimmered in Sara’s eyes, and her voice came out plaintive, My Danny’s not going to die, is he?
Three more angels appeared, two older ladies Brody didn’t recognize, and one male he did. Gambit?
Gambit directed a wobbly smile at little Sara. She was so precious, and they all adored her. Not if I can get Baboon to him quickly, Sara.
Redirecting his gaze to Hamon, he said, They’re on their way.
Okay, Gambit. Thanks.
Gambit spread his wings and headed for his charge, Master Corporal Nils Carsten, code name Baboon.
Ripsaw shifted, and Brody noticed he appeared uncomfortable. His gut twisted when he recalled the expression. It was the countenance Ripsaw honed and used every time they dealt with Danny when he was hurt or came back from being with another unit—one devoid of any emotional triggers.
Hamon reached out and tucked Sara’s golden locks behind her ear. His tone soft and gentle, he urged her, Poppet, go with Rosemary and Gwyneth now. I will protect your Danny as I always do. You will be able to play with him soon.
Promise?
Sara said as crocodile tears began to roll down her alabaster cheeks.
I promise.
Sara gazed at Brody and bravely tried to smile, but sadness permeated her eyes. Take good care of my Danny.
A small sob emerged as she turned and ran to the two ladies. The one with blue eyes bent down and embraced her before all three faded as if never there.
Confused, Brody watched Sara disappear. What is going on? The most heart-wrenching cry he had ever heard rent the air around him. He whipped his head towards the sound. Brody’s jaw dropped, and eyes rounded, aghast seeing Danny on his knees near his earthly body. Dan’s head was thrown back as the primal scream of a wounded animal forcefully erupted from him.
Brody yelled, Nooooooooooo. Danny, noooo!
His bewildered and agony-filled jade eyes turned to his mother. He choked out, Why did he have to find me? Why?

May 26 – Afghanistan – Terrorist Stronghold
Louise wrapped her arms around her son, enclosing him in her wings, consoling and shielding him from viewing the brother of his heart and soul. She held Brody while he wept for Dan.
When the screaming ceased, Brody pulled away. He witnessed Danny cradled in the arms of his angel. Gambit knelt next to Nils Carsten, whispering in Baboon’s ear as their unit mate performed CPR on Danny. His hair ruffled with a strong gust of wind, and Brody’s gaze traveled in the direction from where it blew. He gasped as he beheld Yankee and Ripsaw flapping their wings furiously as their hands gripped the shoulders of Blaze and Patch, propelling both men toward Danny.
Terror raced through Brody as a translucent likeness of Danny appeared and gazed down at his earthly body. Brody surged to his feet and stormed over to the barely formed ethereal mist. His voice boomed with fury, It isn’t your time! You can’t die!
Dan’s head turned to Brody, his disembodied voice dull, I want to die. I killed you. I blew your heart into a million pieces. I deserve death. I can’t live without my brother.
"No! You didn’t kill me! I was already dead," Brody’s voice shook with fear. Danny was not responsible. He had to make him understand.
I know what I did.
Dan pointed to Brody’s destroyed body, a gaping hole where his heart should’ve been. I did that. I should’ve realized it was you. I’m sorry. I want to be with you,
Dan said lifelessly.
You can’t die. Not now. You need to find the beauty of life. You must live for me. Please, Danny, live. Do this for me. Go back. Now! Before it is too late,
Brody begged.
It’s peaceful here, Brody. I don’t hurt.
Dan sagged and fell to his knees, numb and weary. No pain.
Brody dropped to his knee, wrapping both arms around Dan’s ethereal mist as something strange happened. After his arms enfolded Danny, so did a pair of pristine wings. Brody held on to Dan, his voice pleading, Please return. You gotta walk your path. My hand will always be on your back. I’ll be here for you, brother. You’ll never be alone. I promise. Please, go now.
One moment he embraced Dan, and the next, he held nothing. Brody gazed down at the ground. Patch pounded on Danny’s chest—once, twice, three times. I found a pulse. We need air evac now!
He witnessed Blaze radio for evac, take a knee between his earthly body and Danny’s, and place a hand on their heads. Blaze choked out, I’m sorry. Oh, God, I gave the all-clear. Brody, I’m so sorry. Blondie! Hang on, kid. Don’t die. Please, God, don’t take my son from me too.
Time passed as Brody stared through a fog. His vision blurred, and his soul cried out for his brothers’ anguish as they knelt, said a final goodbye to him, then lay a hand on Danny as they waited for the medical evacuation.
When the helicopter landed, Brody observed Hammer lift Danny and carry him as Patch rushed alongside, calling out instructions to the crew of medics. Hamon stayed with Dan, holding him and whispering in his ear. Ripsaw floated next to Patch with a hand on his shoulder. Brody’s gaze returned to Winds just as his friend pulled Blaze upright and urged him towards the bird. Their angels stayed close to them with supportive hands on their backs as they whispered in their ears.
After the evac helicopter took flight, his mother appeared beside him. Brody turned to her with confusion and tears in his eyes. What just happened?
Louise folded her wings, and her hand caressed his cheek. You earned your wings, my son. You passed the first of many tests you must go through to become Dan’s guardian angel. I will guide and train you now. When you are ready, you will take over from Hamon.
Incredulous, Brody asked, What test did I pass?
Dan heard you. Your charge must be able to hear you. You spoke to him, and he listened.
He heard me?
Brody gaped at his mom.
Louise smiled. In a way. He will not remember it as such. Dan may or may not recall what occurred. Most times, our charges do not. Many charges believe we are hallucinations or images created from memories. They dismiss the visions and our guidance as wishful thinking, memories, and such.
Dawning hit Brody. Like when you sang to me. When the music came to me, but there was no music around.
Yes, my love. Exactly like that.
Brody glanced at the shell of his old body once more. Several unit soldiers reverently placed him into a black bag as Nils stood off to the side crying. Brody wished he could tell him and all the guys he was okay.
Putting her arm around Brody’s waist, Louise said, They will grieve for you, my sweet boy. You had a positive impact on so many people and were so loved. In time, their grief will lessen, but they will never forget you. You made a real difference in the world. It’s a better place because you lived.
He studied his mother. You said you watched over me. Were you my guardian angel?
Not at first, but when you met Dan, I took over. My job was to prepare you for this. To help you establish the deep connection with him, you needed to become his protector and keep him in the light.
Still confused, Brody asked, Is that how guardian angels are selected? They need a personal connection?
Louise shook her head. No, not usually, but when it exists, it helps. Like with Ripsaw and Patch and with Yankee and Blaze. But no. The link you and Dan share is rare. Extraordinarily rare. In fact, there has not been a pair like the two of you for a millennium.
Really? Why?
A beautiful smile graced Louise’s face. Because you are Daniel’s gift from God, Daniel is fated to lead a life filled with many trials and much pain. He is a favored son of God, as you are. His life will positively impact millions. For every life Daniel saves from harm, for each person he stops from committing a heinous crime, there are a multitude of souls he touches. By protecting one little girl in an alleyway and killing the man who holds her, Daniel will safeguard so many he will never know about.
Intrigued, Brody listened but didn’t quite understand. How?
Louise thought a moment, trying to determine how best to enlighten her son. "Let’s take the young girl I mentioned. If Sara Clarry is saved by Dan, he sustains the life of the woman who is in charge of caring for her. If Dan doesn’t protect the lass, her caretaker will be so consumed by guilt she will commit suicide. If she does, all who love and care about her will be affected.
"His act will preserve the girl’s family too because if she dies, her family will shatter to pieces. Her grandmother, Lois Clarry, a nurse, will be devastated and stop tending to others. She won’t be around to care for many patients, and consequently, their families will be negatively impacted. It goes on and on to touch hundreds of lives.
And if we look at the man, he needs to kill to save the child. As difficult as that will be for Dan, the result is a corrupted soul will be gone and can no longer wreak havoc in more lives. If Ted Jitters lives, he will go on a drug-induced spree, killing a dozen more innocents.
Louise grasped her son’s hand. What I’m endeavoring to explain is things are interconnected. Dan’s destiny is to directly protect thousands of innocent souls and indirectly safeguard millions.
Brody nodded, starting to understand. You said Danny is favored. Me too. If we are so favored why did we experience so much pain? Mom, you were murdered before my very eyes. My father strangled the life out of you, and all I could do was watch. Sara died right in front of Danny, and his family essentially disowned him. Why?
A male voice spoke from behind Brody. Daniel’s family didn’t disown him. Your heart knows the truth. You’ve known for a while, yet your mind has not accepted the reality. The same is true for Daniel. We can’t control humanity, only attempt to guide them. There is both good and evil in this world. We do our best to help fight evil and keep our charges safe and in the light, but we cannot make them do anything. They possess free will.
Brody turned to the new voice. Who are you?
I’m Patrick Ferguson, William Broderick’s guardian angel.
General Broderick’s?
Brody stared, struggling to process everything.
Patrick nodded.
Louise said, People have the freedom to choose, and their decisions take them down either light or dark paths. True evil exists and is strongest in the dark.
She squeezed his hand and gazed into Brody’s eyes. Dan is from a family of protectors. They have been guardians for more than a millennium and are descendants of Hamon. You, too, are Hamon’s descendant but from a different branch of the family tree. Our branch are bringers of light. We shield and defend their souls as they walk the earth.
Brody reeled as Abbess Mary Catherine’s remarks and his research came to mind, and he mouthed her words, God blessed you, son of Hamon.
Louise sighed. Ah, the words of an earth angel. Mary Catherine provides many with comfort and strength. You have much to learn as you prepare to take over from Hamon. Dan will be entering an extremely dark period. You and Hamon are going to have to work tirelessly to save his soul.
So, Dan’s parents don’t hate or blame him for Sara’s death?
Patrick shook his head sadly. No, they never hated him. They love him unconditionally. They always have and always will. I tried to whisper to William how to reach Daniel, but he’s stubborn and asserts his self-determination often. William has done many things to try to help his son, but most interactions with Daniel tend to backfire. A stubborn but not a stupid man, he now remains and acts in the background, facilitating others to aid Daniel.
Let me show you.
Patrick touched his fingertips to Brody’s forehead, and they radiated a luminous golden light as he transferred images and memories of Daniel’s life from William’s perspective.
Brody blew out a breath. Poor, Danny. How can I help him?
Louise warmly smiled. You started on earth. You shared the gift of music. You spoke to Daniel often about the beauty of life. You taught him tools he uses to cope. You will continue to protect Daniel’s innocence and prevent his soul from falling off the precipice into the darkness.
She kissed his cheek. I love you, son. Your purpose is to keep Daniel in the light so he can travel the difficult path chosen for him.
Warmth and serenity settled around Brody. I’m Danny’s guardian angel. A nervous expression covered his face as he spread his wings for the first time and tried flapping them. Wings for someone who hates to fly … of all the ironies of life … or is that death?
You’ll get the hang of them soon.
A mother’s grin broke out as her son wobbled at his attempt to hover, almost like a drunk trying to walk.
This isn’t so bad … not as scary as flying in a metal tube. He listed to the left and dropped when he didn’t flap properly. An old memory popped into Brody’s head, causing him to burst into joyful laughter. Oh boy, hope I learn to fly better than Danny drives tanks.
Louise’s melodious giggle joined her son’s hearty laughter. Come, my sweet boy. I have much to teach you before you can assist Daniel.
Present Day
December 26 – Ottawa – General Broderick’s Home – Library – 1:10 a.m.
Brody’s thoughts faded as he gazed at his brother. Someday, you will learn the truth. Until then, be brave and remember I am here for you.
He stopped speaking when Becca entered the room.
With a mischievous smile on her face, Becca lightly padded across the carpet to the sofa. In her hand, she clutched a plush animal. Crouching down in front of Dan, she stifled a giggle. She and cohorts Vicky, Ashely, and Amelia, found the perfect thing while the boys were out yesterday afternoon. They searched through several boxes in the attic after talking to Mom.
After hearing about all Dan’s mishaps with TRF in the days leading up to Christmas, the girls couldn’t resist. She carefully lifted the blanket and tucked the animal into Dan’s arms. This will be a hoot when he wakes up and finds this in his arms. Lowering the covers and tucking them in, Becca brushed a slight kiss on her brother’s cheek. Sweet dreams. Love ya, Danny.
Brody chuckled as Becca left the room. The stuffed animal was absolutely perfect. Well, Danny boy, you certainly lucked out with sisters. Both have hearts of gold and love you dearly, as you deserve. Can’t wait to see your reaction.

"Shhhh … we don’t want to wake him, Blaze admonished the group as they noisily filed into the general’s library. He took a seat in a wingback chair and gazed at the man who was both brother and son in his heart. Whispering, he said,
Despite the bruise on his head, Blondie appears in better shape than the last time I saw him. He’s recouped a little of the weight he lost during the interview session."
Jim frowned. Still not in the best shape.
Mason eyed Jim. What do you mean?
We need to change plans. Dan won’t be up to playing hockey today.
Jim set his pack down next to his chair.
Spill it, Patch … Jim.
Mason’s gaze returned to Blondie.
Well, I sort of requested Dr. Fraser hold back the whole truth from Dan.
Blaze turned concerned hazel eyes on Jim. Why would he take the chance of being caught in a lie? Despite being a mistruth by omission, Jim is taking a considerable risk at breaking Dan’s trust. He must have a valid reason to do so. Deciding to focus on Blondie’s health, he asked, How bad?
Grimacing, Jim held Blaze’s gaze. Mostly, he needs rest. Strained his muscles badly when he almost fell through a roof. That on top of the other mishaps, starting with freezing in a pear tree.
Scott entered the room, followed by Adam and Jeff. Dan told us about his twelve days of Christmas. Are you saying he’s hurt worse than he indicated?
Jim answered, Yes. Seems he’s had a rough few weeks. I need to make sure he is still on the mend and following the doc’s orders. Dr. Fraser prescribed medication and sent him on his way, telling him to take it easy on his vacation, and he should be okay when he returned.
How rough and why does he need pain meds?
Mason asked.
Jim sighed. Well, let’s see. First, he was frozen to a pear tree. He became so covered in a thick coat of ice from freezing rain as he held his sniper position on a call that Lexa had to use a tire iron to knock the ice off to free him.
He didn’t get sick, did he? His lungs …
Winds trailed off with concern.
Shaking his head, Jim said, No. Dan’s gotten wiser. He wears the cold weather gear we use under his uniform, but you didn’t hear that from me. Dan doesn’t like to advertise what he perceives as weakness.
Blaze nodded. Kid is getting a bit smarter, but it isn’t a weakness to protect himself. What else happened?
As Jim took a seat, he began relating the litany of mishaps that befell Dan. Everyone snickered as Jim told them about Dan being high and speaking Latin to Jon. Jim concluded, I told Fraser I would be here to check on Dan today, and he wouldn’t have much opportunity to get into trouble yesterday.
Mason snorted. This is Blondie you’re talking about. I mean, he couldn’t even go to the ballet without trouble finding him.
Blaze pinned his eyes on Jim. So, you, Dr. Fraser, and Lexa colluded not to tell Blondie he reinjured his muscles. Is that what you are saying?
The truth written in Jim’s expression, he answered, Yeah, basically.
Winds shook his head. Wouldn’t want to be you when you come clean to Blondie. You do realize the risk you’re taking in being untruthful with him? We rely on the trust you two share. You’re the only one he is one hundred percent honest with about his physical health.
Sitting on the edge of the couch, Jeff focused on Winds. Not true. Danny is forthcoming with Scott. They made a pact when Dan was five to be honest with each other. He tells Scott things he hides from others.
Adam glanced at Dan and then eyed Jim critically. Why’d you lie to him?
Wanted him to enjoy Christmas. I met Lexa and Dr. Fraser in the hall at the emergency room on the twenty-fourth and discovered what happened in their warrant call. We all agreed he didn’t need to worry about his health. Fraser said the painkillers would mask his symptoms.
A scowl crossed Zach’s face as he wandered in and caught the tail end of Jim’s comment. I can’t believe you were so damned stupid. Dan probably overexerted himself yesterday with the snowball war. No wonder he crapped out so early and napped so long. Stupid decision not to tell him.
Annoyance flashed in Blaze’s eyes. Zach had no right to talk like that to Patch. He started to open his mouth to set the kid straight but halted when he glimpsed Mrs. Broderick at the threshold.
Yvonne breezed in, followed by Kyle, who carried a large tray. Zachary Ryan Broderick, that is no way to speak to Dan’s friends. You were raised with better manners. Apologize, this instant.
Not agreeing but complying, Zach said, Sorry.
As Yvonne said, Coffee?
Kyle set the tray down on the table.
Hiding his smirk at the way she scolded the young man, Blaze stood. Yes, ma’am. Thank you.
Yvonne poured coffee for each of the men, and Kyle helped pass them out. When she finished, Yvonne went to the couch and gently stroked Dan’s hair as he continued sleeping. She leaned down and kissed his forehead before straightening up and focusing her emerald green eyes on Jim. You only had his best interest at heart. He will forgive you.
She glided over to Jim and clasped both his hands in hers. Mr. Shea, I sincerely appreciate all the wonderful care you have given to my son.
Under the scrutiny of Dan’s mother, Jim blushed. My pleasure, ma’am. He did the same for us too.
Yvonne’s smile grew as she turned to gaze at the others. Captain Blain, Warrant Officer Simons, Sergeant Srònaich O’Naoimhín. My thanks to you also for all your efforts. I understand the lengths to which you men went to safeguard Dan. I will never be able to express my gratitude fully.
Smiling at the gracious lady, Blaze said, No gratitude necessary, ma’am. As Jim said, your son returned the full measure to us. I owe my life many times over to him. As do each one of us.
Winds nodded. The first mission with our unit, he saved all of us. For six years, we covered each other.
As he absently rubbed his facial scar and stared at Blondie, Mason said, I would gladly die any day to protect Blondie. I almost killed him once as he attempted to save me. I’ll never forget his sacrifices.
Kyle blinked at Mason’s words. You nearly killed Dan?
Jim interjected. No, not in so many words.
Yes,
Mason answered at the same time.
Their Humvee ran over an IED. Mason was injured, and in his confusion, he tried to remove shrapnel from his chest. Blondie stopped him, but Mason fought back. He did not intentionally hurt Blondie,
Blaze explained.
Rising from the warm cocoon of sleep, Dan registered sounds but buried his head in his pillow, not ready to awaken and leave a place of serenity. He smiled at Sara as she waved to him from Santa’s sleigh. He wanted to go with her, her excitement palpable as she snuggled up close to the jolly fat man for a trip to the North Pole. He waved at his little sister as the sleigh rose in the air pulled by Rudolph. Dan sighed. She is safe and happy.
As the light of day intruded upon his starlight night, Dan rolled to his back and stretched his legs out. The sounds grew more distinct, becoming voices, though not awake enough to make out words or who spoke.
Winds quietly said, Hey, the kid’s waking up.
Everyone quieted as Blaze, Winds, Mason, and Jim positioned themselves in front of Blondie to surprise him when he opened his eyes.
Noise ceased, making sleep inviting again. He settled, wanting to burrow into warmth, and reached to pull the afghan over his head, but something in his arms prodded him to blink open his eyes to determine what he held. Bringing the item up as his eyes focused on the face of a stuffed Wile E. Coyote stared back at him. As if that was not surprising enough, the bursts of laughter erupting around him caused him to jerk upright, blinking rapidly to focus on the faces of those surrounding him.
A groan escaped as a result of his quick movements, and his hand dropped to his lap. The toy coyote tumbled to the floor as Dan stared at his brothers, cousins, and mother. His eyes moved back to Mason, Jim, Winds, and Blaze. How?
He shifted and stifled another groan as his muscles protested.
Aw damn, sorry, kid.
Blaze leaned forward. Not how we intended to wake you up.
Jim knelt in front of him, concern written on his face. Pain level?
Automatically, Dan answered, Four. Could use my meds.
He blinked again. Wait. Why are you here? Aren’t you spending Christmas with your soon-to-be in-laws?
Winds picked up the stuffed coyote and plopped down next to Blondie. We decided to surprise you. Jim has a lifetime to spend with them. We missed you. So, … here we are.
He chuckled as he played with the long ears of the coyote. Sleeping with toys must be a substitute for sleeping with Le—OW! Damn! Mason, you hit hard.
He rubbed the back of his stinging head.
Ladies are present. Watch your mouth.
Mason deflected and glared at Winds for almost revealing Lexa’s name.
Sorry, ma’am.
Sheepishly, Winds glanced at Mrs. Broderick.
Yvonne covered her mirth as she said, Brunch will be ready in about an hour. I’ll leave you boys to your own devices until then.
She stepped forward and kissed Dan’s cheek. Morning. Hope you slept well.
I did. Um, where’d this come from?
Dan pointed to the plush coyote.
Well, now. You might want to talk to your sister about that one.
Yvonne giggled as she strolled out of the room.
I’m gonna grab a shower before brunch. Back in a bit.
Dan rose, wincing with the movement. Crap, I hurt more than I should.
Jim stood and picked up his pack. Dan, I need to examine you.
Why?
With everyone’s eyes on him, Jim became uneasy. A private discussion would be better if Dan got angry with him. You winced, groaned, and said you’re at level four. You go shower, and I’ll grab some toast and your meds.
Dan nodded, and both ambled out of the library.
General Broderick’s Home – Dan’s Room – 11:15 a.m.
Sitting on his bed, shirtless and in his jeans, Dan peered up at Jim after being examined and taking the offered pills. How did you know I hurt this time?
Downcast, Jim replied, I was at the hospital when Lexa brought you in to have your hand examined. Just happened to overhear you fell fifteen feet when the roof collapsed.
Uh-huh. More like you cornered Lexa and Dr. Fraser for details.
Yeah, well. I did. Before I say anything else … this is all on me, not Lexa or Fraser. I should’ve let Fraser tell you the truth.
Jim’s eyes flicked down, ashamed and full of worry now that he must admit his error.
So, how am I? Truthfully this time.
Dan’s voice held an edgy note. He couldn’t quite wrap his mind around the fact Jim had coerced the doctor to be less than forthcoming with him about his health.
I only wanted you to enjoy your Christmas without worrying about whether you would be on light duty when you returned to TRF. You strained your chest muscles again. But, if you take it easy for the rest of your vacation, you should be fit for duty. Sorry. You wouldn’t have overdone yesterday if I allowed Fraser to be honest with you. I think you are out of any more snowball wars. Perhaps a heating pad will help relax your muscles.
Reading Jim’s contrition, Dan stood and lightly gripped Jim on the left bicep, offering a tangible expression of care which Jim would understand. I appreciate the thought, but, Jim, I’m always truthful with you. I expect the same back. That’s how it works for us.
Crestfallen, Jim apologized, I’m deeply sorry. Won’t happen again.
Accepting the apology, Dan said, Even if I had known, I would’ve done what I did yesterday anyways—it was important to me. I appreciate all you do for me. If not for you, I wouldn’t be alive. You’re like my earth-bound guardian angel. Thank you for always taking such good care of me.
Studying Dan’s eyes, Jim noted no lasting recrimination, and a smile started to grow. If we are getting all sappy, just let me say, it’s been my honor. You are worth it. You all are. We all walked through hell together. I’m glad most of us made it through to better times.
Dan nodded, Wish we all did.
Me too.
Jim began to pack his supplies after bandaging Dan’s hand.
Pulling his shirt on, Dan grinned. What a way to wake up. All four of your ugly mugs staring at me.
Jim chuckled. Not quite the way we wanted. We’ll figure out something to do which won’t require you to exert yourself today.
Dan’s gaze settled on his desk and recalled the letters from Brody for each of them. After brunch, he would tell them about the truck and letters.
Brunch with Champions

December 26 – General Broderick’s Home – Kitchen – 11:30 a.m.
Laughter met Dan and Jim as they entered the kitchen. Around the table sat all the male Brodericks, Blaze, Mason, and Winds. Surprised to see his uncles here, Dan sauntered over and took a seat between his dad and Blaze. What’s going on?
Your mother requested our presence today. So, we are here.
Leaning closer to Daniel, he said quietly, I asked why but she clammed up tighter than a drum. Guess we need to wait until she decides to tell us.
William turned to Yvonne and grinned.
Dan filled his plate with an assortment of food as the guys passed around eggs, ham, scalloped potatoes, strawberry crepes, cinnamon rolls, smoked salmon, croissants, and fruit salad. He dug in with a renewed appetite. The hot shower and pain meds took the edge off, and he felt reasonably decent.
Yvonne surveyed the gathered men and smiled. Only five shy before she could spring her little surprise. The doorbell rang, and she excused herself to go answer the door.
Between mouthfuls, noting the five empty spots, Dan asked, Who else is expected?
No idea.
William sipped his coffee.
Blaze turned to Blondie. Everything okay between you and Jim?
Yeah, we’re fine.
Realizing what he said, he quickly added, We’re okay. I appreciate why he chose to hide my condition from me. Jim was not being malicious and understands never to do it again.
Great. How are you feeling?
Jim piped in, Probably not as good as he did when he got high with the Lieutenant Governor.
What?
Coffee dribbled down William’s chin as he nearly choked.
Dan laughed. Interesting day at work.
Do tell,
Erik prodded.
As Dan started to explain, his mom returned, and the conversation stopped.
William stood immediately, a broad smile plastered on his face. Dom. What are you doing here?
My friend, it is so wonderful to see you.
Mason, Blaze, Winds, and Jim stared at Dominique Savoy. A man none of them had seen in nearly five and a half years, nor ever expected to see again. Stunned as the general embraced the man, it became clear to them a friendship existed between those two, which was older than five years. The impression solidified further when all of the elder Brodericks welcomed Dom by name, but what nailed the coffin shut occurred when Dom greeted Dan.
Dom noted the astonished expressions as he grasped Dan’s hand and said, Dan, I’m so pleased you are hale and hearty. Becca couldn’t stop singing your praises. Thank you for helping your father accept reason; he can be hardheaded. It is an immense pleasure having my goddaughter staying with me; Becca is delightful.
Dom chuckled at William’s disgruntled harrumph.
About to respond, Dan’s gaze flicked to the doorway. The unit men and Dan’s eyes all became rounded with wonder as they spied two lovely young ladies entering the kitchen chattering away in French to Becca. Their minds aged the Savoy girls, and they realized thirteen-year-old Nicolette was close to if not nineteen, and eleven-year-old Anna-Marie was now at least sixteen, perhaps seventeen, depending on when her birthday fell.
Puffed up like a proud papa, Dom grinned as his daughters came to him. Nicolette, Anna-Marie, I would like to introduce you to some fine men.
He started with Dan and went around the table ending with Blaze.
Each could only stare; they dare not indicate they knew the teens as the mission remained highly classified for many reasons. It appeared fortune still smiled on Dom’s daughters since neither recognized them. Although given the fact the girls stayed under the influence of a strong sedative the entire time, they likely had no clue who rescued them. Each man shuddered at the thought of what could’ve happened to their innocence.
To break the undercurrent of tension that coming face-to-face with Nicolette and Anna-Marie after so many years caused, Dan turned and asked Becca, Okay, so what’s up with the stuffed coyote?
Becca’s eyes danced as she giggled. Well, brother dearest, he’s your mascot. I seriously think your team should be renamed to Team Acme with all the crazy things that happen to you as you chase bad guys.
The guys erupted into laughter as Dan shook his head. He didn’t dare share that Loki sometimes called him Wile E. Coyote.
Nikki and Anna, I want to show you something I designed.
Becca led Dom’s girls from the room as she began describing her latest creation.
Yvonne brought Dom a cup of coffee. How was the flight?
Taking a seat between Erik and William, Dom replied, Uneventful.
Still, a bit bewildered at Dom’s appearance, William asked again, What brings you here?
Dom winked at Yvonne. A lovely lady requested my appearance.
Turning to William, he said, Plus, some business requires me to be here after the new year, so I modified my plans and came a few days earlier.
William nodded, knowing not to delve into Dom’s affairs because whatever he shared in the presence of others would not be the truth. Happy you’re here.
The back door opened, and Yvonne beamed as Mike Galloway and his men, Drake, Craig, and Jack, entered. Mike’s bemused face landed on the general first, then turned to Mrs. Broderick. Ma’am, we came as swiftly as possible. What is the situation?
Yvonne reached for the coffee pot wearing a sheepish grin. Sorry for the ruse, Mike. Please take a seat and enjoy some brunch. I’ll explain in a moment.
All the guys shared glances, trying to figure out what she was up to as Yvonne began to fill four mugs.
After delivering the cups, Yvonne’s eyes roamed over the honorable men. You are all special to me.
Her gaze settled on Dan, and her smile brightened. "In one way or another, each one of you has had a hand in making my wish come true. Due in part to your efforts, my son found his way home.
There is no way I can ever repay you for what you’ve done. But I would like to show my appreciation in a small way. I arranged for a VIP box for all of you at today’s game between the Senators and Maple Leafs.
They only stared when William stood, walked to his wife, and embraced her. Have I told you how much I love you?
Yvonne hugged William. Yes, but I do like hearing you say it.
Kissing Yvonne’s cheek gently, William said, You are my sun, my moon, and my stars. I love you more every day.
After each thanked Yvonne, the men became boisterous as they all began talking about the impending hockey game. Yvonne handed the tickets to William before leaving to join Nicolette, Anna-Marie, and Becca, who planned to meet up with the other Broderick women for an afternoon of shopping.
Dan leaned in close to his dad and whispered, Mom amazes me.
Me too.
William beamed.
As the meal wound down, Dan turned to Blaze and said, It will be a tight squeeze with Mason, but the five of us can take my truck.
You got a truck?
Blaze asked, and Dan only nodded.
General Broderick’s Home – Garage – 2:00 p.m.
Dan led the way to the multi-car garage with Jim, Mason, Winds, and Blaze following him. He remained silent about how he acquired his truck, wanting to reveal it outside and away from the rest of the family to afford the guys privacy and the ability to express their real emotions. He stopped and opened the garage door with the remote Dad gave him.
Winds whistled as he gazed at the blue four by four. Awesome. A gift from your parents?
No.
You finally decided to buy a suitable vehicle for winter,
Jim said.
No.
Cool intake vent. If you didn’t buy it and your family didn’t give this to you, where’d you get it?
Mason ran a hand along the hood.
Dan took a deep breath, still in awe. Brody gave me the truck.
Four mouths dropped open as they stared at Dan. Blaze spoke first. This is from Brody. How? When?
A broad smile bloomed on Mason’s face. Leave it to Brody to find a way to shock the hell out of us.
Distant memories came back to Blaze. My God, this is the vehicle he talked non-stop about on the flight back to Kandahar after we found out about your injuries with Marley’s unit. I had a hell of a time keeping him preoccupied on the trip until he started telling me about a four-wheel-drive truck.
Why’d he leave you this?
Winds asked.
Dan explained the significance of Brody’s gift as he fiddled with the key. When he finished, he said, I received it last night. Still overwhelming.
Jim’s astonishment and joy were evident in his expression as he patted Dan’s back. Wow. Just wow. He loved you so much.
Yeah, and I loved him too. I miss him every day, but the gift I cherish most is not this truck … Brody gave me something better.
Blaze eyed him. Like what?
Tossing the keychain to Blaze, Dan said, You’ll need to drive … can’t on my meds. Actually, it is a gift I want to share with all of you.
Dan moved to the rear door. Mason, you ride up front with Blaze, so you don’t squash Winds and Jim.
Mason shook his head. No. I’ll ride in back. You need a comfortable seat.
How about having Mason drive, and Blaze can ride with us in the back seat?
Winds suggested.
Blaze handed the set of keys to Mason. Sounds like a plan to me.
The five men loaded up. Mason waited until everyone was seat belted before he inserted the keys. So, what is this gift you cherish?
You’ll find out soon enough. Let’s go.
When Mason turned the ignition, the stereo came to life. As the loud music trailed off, he reached to put the vehicle in drive, but his hand halted when Brody’s voice filled the air. The guy’s jaws dropped again as they listened.
So, Danny, I was thinking. You should go back to being a police officer, give up the family business, so to speak. The general will be pissed, but who cares what he thinks. This is your life, Danny. Your dream was to be a cop, and you’ll be an excellent one.
But don’t fall into the trap, so many officers do. Don’t become jaded. Remember, people are generally nice. Your job will expose you to the worst side of citizens on a daily basis, and you must remember why you wanted to be a constable. To serve and to protect. The vast majority of people are decent and caring. It only takes a few rotten apples to wreak havoc.
Brody laughed. "Remember when we were stationed at CFB Edmonton and sent to CFB Cold Lake for our emergency medical and evacuation procedures fresher training? That was about eight months before we tried out for Special Forces. We had a great time once you quit puking.
"Do you remember the cute little RCMP officer who pulled me over near Beaver Crossing for speeding down AB-28 because we were running late? Thanks to you, I might add. If you had not eaten at the roadside stand, we wouldn’t have had to stop for you to puke so often. No, I guess you wouldn’t remember her; you were green to the gills.
"We never did find out what gave you food poisoning, but you ate so much crap at the stand. I swear your leg is hollow sometimes. Thought I might need to practice my paltry medical skills on you that day. Wish we knew Patch back then. He would’ve fixed you up in a jiffy.
Anyhow, so I’ll tell you. She pulls me over. I stop because I’m an obedient citizen.
Brody snorted. When she approached, I pointed to you as you had your face buried in the plastic bag and puking yet again. I told her I was rushing you to the base hospital. She gave you one glance and didn’t even ask for my license. She escorted us all the way there at top speed.
"Wish I asked for her number. I don’t recall her name … Mc-something. I was captivated by her eyes. The intriguing shade of hazel with golden flecks filled with compassion once she spotted you. Damn, she was stunning, though. She looked like a keeper. Hmmm, now that I think of it, she seemed more your type than mine. Auburn hair, petite, and a dazzling smile.
"Sorry for rambling, but this ties into what I was thinking about you becoming a cop. You must search for the beauty of your life to shore you up when dealing with all the garbage you’ll face. Find someone who will walk beside you in life and keep you focused on the positive. Someone from whom you can draw strength and slow down to enjoy the sunrises with.
I promise she’s out there. You just need to be patient to find her. Perhaps you already have, and if so, I told you so. In honor of the compassionate, petite, hazel-eyed RCMP officer, I added the next song.
Dan listened to the lyrics of ‘It Was Always You’ by Maroon 5, and a strange butterfly sensation fluttered in his stomach. Petite, compassionate, auburn-haired, and golden-flecked hazel eyes describe Lexa. She also grew up in Cold Lake and went to university in Edmonton before joining the RCMP. Brody said Mc something … could it have been her? Nah, it couldn’t be. That would be too weird. On the other hand, bizarre shit happens to me all the time. Next time I call her, I’ll ask. Would be kinda cool if Brody met Lexa.
When the song stopped, Dan paused the CD. Brody’s gift of his voice. I’m going to make you each a copy of these.
Mason wiped his eyes as he connected with Blaze’s in the rearview mirror and noted a similar pooling. He placed his hand on Blondie’s knee as Jim, Winds, and Blaze each reached out and placed a hand on their brother’s shoulders. No one spoke for several moments, each lost in their memories of Brody.
Winds ended the silence, Aren’t Lexa’s eyes hazel?
Dan chuckled and nodded. Yeah, yeah, they are.
Brody’s a prophet,
Jim softly said.
Knocking on Dan’s window broke the men apart as Dan turned and found Scott. He lowered the window, and Scott inquired, Everything okay?
Yeah, we’re coming. Wouldn’t miss a game where the Leafs are gonna wipe the ice with your team,
Dan said.
Defector! You should be supporting the Senators. You’re from Ottawa,
Winds stated.
Dan shrugged with a grin. I live in Toronto. Jim’s with me and the Maple Leafs. Right, Jim?
Jim chuckled. I grew up in Vancouver and am a Canucks fan, but I suppose since I transplanted to Toronto, I should root for the hometown team. Besides, Ottawa’s team has never won the cup.
Well, your precious Leafs haven’t won one since sixty-seven. About the same thing,
Winds retorted.
Mason grinned. Too bad the Montreal Canadiens aren’t playing. They’d decimate both those teams.
As Scott chuckled and headed for Adam’s truck, Dan rolled up the window, and Mason put the vehicle in gear, joining the rolling caravan heading for the arena. Dan turned on the CD again and let it play, noting the smiling faces of Mason, Jim, Blaze, and Winds.
Dan’s Truck En Route to Hockey Arena
Leaning back in the seat, Blaze listened to the music and allowed his mind to wander. All the guys appeared happier than he had ever seen them. Winds, Blondie, Mason, and Jim especially.
Being a medic in Special Forces had taken a toll on the man. It was one thing to go on a battlefield to care for unknown soldiers, able to distance one’s self from those suffering, but quite another be the one everyone turned to when your brothers are screaming in pain and bleeding out.
Jim walked through hell. The investigation revealed their unit was always assigned the riskiest and most physically demanding missions in the years Blondie was with them. Plouffe was a purely evil man with no redeeming qualities to subject Blondie and the rest of them to that.
While he was in the midst of it, Blaze had known things were different than previous times in the field, but in hindsight, he recognized he wore blinders, thinking terrorist activity had only heightened and believed the general pulled the strings. In retrospect, it became clear, Plouffe handpicked the missions he assigned to them. Well, most.
Some missions required the unique skills of the Guardians. As pissed as he had been at the time, the general was right to send them to rescue Dom Savoy’s girls. No one except Blondie spoke Russian and could’ve pulled off the impersonation of Maks. Though without Jim, they would’ve lost Blondie and Ripsaw on that mission.
Winds noted the wistful look on his best friend’s face. What are you thinking about?
Blaze pulled out of his head and glanced at Winds. Just how different things are this year. Life’s good.
About to respond, Winds clamped his mouth shut when Brody’s voice came over the speakers again. The cab became silent, hanging on his every word, each relishing hearing him again.
Hey, Danny, I know you always liked ‘Dream On’ by Aerosmith hoped you enjoyed that one. Keep singing with me and dream on. The next up is another Aerosmith tune, ‘Dude Looks Like a Lady.’
Brody laughed heartily and then snorted. This song reminds me of the time Winds kissed that guy. Remember? We went to the base bar while you recouped from being impaled. Winds was totally hammered when he walked up to the bar to buy another round. Next thing we know, he is making out with a long-haired blond.
Laughing again, Brody said, "When the dude spoke in deep bass and told Winds it was the best kiss he had had in ages, I laughed my ass off. Winds ended up on the floor looking confused and mumbling, ‘lady is a dude.’
"Blaze picked up Winds and took him back to the barracks. In Winds’ defense, a military bar isn’t where you would expect to find a pretty dude with long hair. Do me a favor and razz Winds about that one. Maybe get him some mouthwash or give him an
