Intoxicating (Elite Protection Services Book 1) Kindle Edition
LINCOLN HUDSON has just been handed the easiest job in the world. Babysit the spoiled son of a conservative senator, keep him out of trouble, and receive a six-figure paycheck. A paycheck he desperately needs. Wyatt’s father claims he needs Linc’s firm hand and discipline. One look at him and Linc agrees. Wyatt needs discipline.
Being the closeted gay son of a family values senator has left WYATT EDGEWORTH with a reckless streak and a love of partying that just cost him eight months of his life and might cost his father his re-election. So now, he has a babysitter. A very sexy babysitter.
When Wyatt drunkenly confesses his attraction to Linc, they reach an understanding. Wyatt gets the companion he craves and Linc gets a paycheck, then, once Wyatt’s house arrest is over, they go their separate ways. For this to work, discretion is key, but with a reporter dogging Wyatt’s every move, that might prove impossible.
Staying together was never an option, but with each passing day, their feelings only grow. Will they risk it all for what’s supposed to be a harmless fling?
INTOXICATING is the first book in the Elite Protection Services Series and contains a HEA and no cliffhangers.
Warning: This book contains scenes which may trigger some people including self-harm, suicide attempt, past and present physical abuse, and implied past sexual violence.

★★★★★ Ms James made me feel both men's pain and made me wish to help them. It caused so many emotions from me while reading it - from rage to deep sorrow. And that's the best kind of book to me. ~ Gerbera Amazon Vine Voice Reviewer
★★★★★ What starts as on the surface a "father hires bodyguard to babysit his out of control son" situation morphs into a consuming Daddy kink story--one that fully envelops the main characters and turns their just-a-fling into something far deeper and more meaningful. ~ Carra at Making it Happen blog
★★★★★ I cannot express how much I adore this book. I could barely tear my eyes off the page, I was so addicted to reading it. ~ Amazon Vine Voice Reviewer
★★★★★ In many ways Intoxicating by Onley James broke my heart. It was the HEA that made everything okay in the end though. ~ Wine Drunk Book Reviews

- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2025Fantastic. I loved this book so much. It was exactly what I wanted. The characters were compelling and relatable, their problems were handled delicately and honestly, and their happiness was infectious. I definitely should have read this series before Necessary Evils because the whole time I was wishing for his dad and Victor’s deaths - forgetting we hadn’t met the Mulvanys yet.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2020This book pretty much vacillates between two settings, holy-cow-that’s-a-lot-of-shenanigans and heartbreaking trauma. So it’s basically one heck of a ride.
There’s two ways of reading this book. You can go the superficial route and focus on all the nakey while reveling in the dramatics that is Wyatt’s crappy situation. Or you can choose to appreciate it as the portrayal of a traumatized and abused individual that copes with his pain in an unusual way. I did the latter.
So, this is a Daddy-kink story. And I quite literally cringe every time I read the word daddy in a sexual context . And yet I liked this book. A lot. I tried to ignore the D-word whenever it occured, and in doing so I could fully appreciate Wyatt’s and Linc’s dynamics. Because all other aspects of their relationship just gave me the warm fuzzies. The way Linc cares for Wyatt in every way, trying to protect him. Both from himself and from his father. It’s beyond loving.
I also liked how, despite all of the shenanigans in this read, it wasn’t just gratuitous sex. It was a way for Wyatt to cope. For Linc to get Wyatt out of his own head, to give him some sense of peace in a life that’s threatening to spiral out of control. I thought that was a an interesting justification for the amount of d*cking going on.
There was a lot to work through in this story. All of Wyatt’s past and on-going trauma was exhausting to process, but I think James handled it pretty good. The main focus wasn’t on the past, instead it was on how it all effected Wyatt in the here and now. And how Linc was there trying to help him through it. I really liked that the story didn’t offer excessive details about the abuse Wyatt suffered. It was horrible enough, the glimpses that were shown.
Something that I thought was completely unnecessary was Linc’s PTSD. It was just too much for this short read. It already contained soooo many different angles, adding PTSD on top of that just felt excessive. Especially since it was hardly addressed at all in the story, and apart from Linc’s very first nightmare, it didn’t add anything to the storyline.
To summarize, this is a great story though emotionally exhausting, so it’s well worth reading if you can handle a vicious father, all kinds of abuse (including sexual) and self-harm bordering on attempted suicide. There’s so many triggers in this read it’s crazy.
What I can’t decide on though is the realism of a story like this, I’m not an American. But I have such a hard time envisioning such intense bigotry and hate being an actual thing this day in age. However, I do know there is conversion therapy still in use. How that can possibly be legal is beyond me, but then I look at the current POTUS and if that can happen, maybe the story in this book isn’t so far-fetched after all.

I fell in love with this author's series Necessary Evils, and since patience isn't one of my virtues I decided to try one of her other series while I was waiting for the next Necessary Evil book. I am so glad I did and I am kicking myself for waiting so long.
Wyatt has been abused, neglected, and made to feel like a failure because of his sexual orientation. Wyatt's lifestyle does not suit the narrative of his father, a Senator whose campaign is based on family values. Linc has been hired as Wyatt's bodyguard, but he is more of a keeper because the Senator does not want any further embarrassment before the election.
This book hurt my heart, Wyatt’s storyline brought tears to my eyes, he was so lost. Until LInc, the broken military man, is charged with keeping him safe. Linc has a lot of baggage too, PTSD and carrying the weight of his military experiences with him. Wyatt and Linc are two extremely broken souls that somehow find just what the other needs to heal, and folks… sex doesn’t solve eveyrhting in this series. It takes communication, therapy, and friendships.
I am already in love with this series and I am going to binge the books as quickly as I can turn the pages. This book will hurt, heal, and reshape your heart. The storyline is solid, the characters well developed, and the steam/romance will have you panting. A phenomenally dark, angsty, romance that will keep you wanting more!
A must read in my opinion and I will definitely keep reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2024This book was so good that I had to say something. I usually just click on the stars and that’s it. From the first chapter I knew I was going to be reading something that would touch me deeply. Onley made me feel all of Wyatt’s pain and suffering. If you haven’t read this book yet please be advised that there are TW for suicide, self-harm, and SA. I’m not one for books like this but once I started I couldn’t put it down.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2021This book had a lot of serious parts. I love these types, the suspense, protection, love and savior theme. However it was right on the border of too much trauma. Not because I couldn’t handle the content but because both main characters had very deep issues. It almost felt like how could they possibly get through all of it? It may have been more balanced if at least one of the guy’s problems was slightly less intense. I never say things have to be ‘realistic’ in fiction books, hell I even love fantasy…but when it just seems like more and more hits on every other page, it made it feel like too much. And usually when I read Daddy books, the protector/Daddy can handle it all. In this one, that character is suffering also and makes it off kilter. How can he be the protector but not that great at it? It feels wrong to say because I like him, but it felt off. I struggled to believe their love could have happened in the timeframe of one story and somehow emotional stability occurred too. All that said, it was well written with amazing characters and it still is my favorite trope. So, I did like it and I do think it’s definitely worth a read. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. But I wanted to be honest in case anyone considering is triggered at all—-there is a whole lot abuse and if you are looking for an epic turnaround, it is kind of a battlefield to get there.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a little out of words
I knew this would be intense.... but damn the ride was so wild that I thought I was in a safari.
This was, indeed, my first time reading a "daddy setting" and that alone would probably already make it quite the thing, but gosh the rawness of Wyalt's situation was heart wrenching. His father made my blood boil from line one. Now! Linc is beyond amazing...(the descriptions of him made me think of someone similar to Antonio Bandeiras XD damn hoooot daddy.) he was so sweet, snsual and caring even though he spent half the way trying to convince himself that it was just a fling.... Yeah right. Like I haven't heard that one before LOL The author had me from beginning to end and apart from the trigger warnings that u should be aware of it is a really beautiful and steamy romance (my tablet nearly melted... awesome hahaha)... two broken souls finding their way in each other with a nice HEA.
OH! Just one last thing, I NEED CHARLIE IN MY LIFE RIGHT ABOUT NOW. I love her! Seriously she's amazing, I could even ignore the main couple a little bit just for her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Onley James does it every time!
One of my favorite authors and I couldn’t tell you exactly why. I am simply captivated from the first couple of pages. And then the only wish you have is to slow down time so you can spend more time with the book and the characters.
What I particularly loved about this story was how Onley James has throw gift of putting characters together from the most unusual circumstances and create a love story that not only clicks, but it’s believable and captivating.
I loved Wyatt and Linc. I loved the start of this series and can’t wait for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it more than I thought I would!
I am not going to say: BUY IT now!
BUT if you are a fan of the Daddy kink WITH story. I would kind of say you should read it.
I was shocked by the Daddy kink (at the beginning) but I still got trough even I hated the daddy thing. I guess if you are okay or even love this kink it is fine it is just something that is so far away I just find it not appealing.
So the Story began and I was already sad. Not because it is bad written or something. I just felled like I want to hug the main char. For reasons.
I have read some recension that there is just too much sex.
And I was like: lets go SMUT. There was some spicy but it was not the main thing. And it made the Story so great. It was important to the story. Sex in a relationship is always important even in real life. And so it is here.
I am happy that I read the book (it took me one day so a few hours. I just could not put it away)
-I am new to reading books! So you could consider if you want to believe a newbie as I am ^^ but maybe you are going to love it more than you may think, the same as I do.

Oh, the drama!
This was so different from Unhinged. Not in a bad sense, just different.
The daddy/boy trope is not always my fav, but I do enjoy it when (like in this case) it's not kinky (too kinky, at least). I like it when it's about the dynamics, about protection, submission and heathy domination. I don't like it as much when other kinks enter the picture, but as I said, this was not the case.
The mix of tropes in this book got me early on. Linc is hired by a senator to "protect" his son from himself, or better yet... To prevent him from becoming an scandal. Wyatt can look like any problematic rich boy, but his life is not easy and his biggest enemy is his own father. He's used to the idea of not being happy, of never being free to be himself, go live his own life...
Linc entering the picture changes things. He's caring and protective by nature, but seeing Wyatt moves something deep inside him. Once he understands how deeply Wyatt needs love and care, for someone to take care of him, to truly see him and to matter... He can't resist. Even if that risks his work and the pay he needs so much.
It was beautiful seeing Wyatt come to life. The early stages of their relationship is fun, with them trying to resist each other and the daddy/boy dynamic starting to develop. Once they accept the attraction between them is impossible to resist, we start seeing a change in Wyatt.
The reason why I'm not giving this book an higher rate is that sometimes it felt... Long. Unnecessarily so. Like sometimes there's too much filling, some parts being just more of the same until something new actually happens.
It doesn't go as far as becoming boring, but sometimes I did feel like nothing much was happening. And that was a pity.
Wyatt's family drama was superb. And the end, from the last fundraiser to the epilogue, was so full of emotions I couldn't stop reading.
I don't know who the next characters will be (I'm guessing Jackson will have his book sometime?) but I already have the second book and I don't discard reading it next.
