Good Guy (Rookie Rebels) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 3,761 ratings

He's a Special Forces veteran making his pro hockey debut. She's a dogged sports reporter determined to get a scoop. She's also his best friend's widow . . .

Fans can't get enough of Levi Hunt, the Special Forces veteran who put his NHL career on hold to serve his country and fight the bad guys. So when his new Chicago Rebels bosses tell him to cooperate with the press on a profile, he's ready to do his duty. Until he finds out who he has to work with: flame-haired, freckle-splashed, impossibly perky Jordan Cooke.

The woman he should
not have kissed the night she buried her husband, Levi's best friend in the service.

Hockey-stick-up-his-butt-serious Levi Hunt might despise Jordan for reasons she can't fathom--okay, it's to do with kissing--but her future in the cutthroat world of sports reporting hangs on delivering the goods on the league's hottest, grumpiest rookie. So what if he's not interested in having his life plated up for public consumption. Too bad. Jordan will have to play dirty to get her scoop and even dirtier to get her man.

Only in winning the story, she might just lose her heart ...

From the Author

The Rookie Rebels feature "rookie" heroes but not in the way you might expect. No green, fresh-out-of-college man babies here! These guys have had their NHL careers put on hold for a reason, such as military service, life-threatening injury, or unspeakable tragedy. Their second acts and roads to redemption will be with everyone's favorite hockey team, the Chicago Rebels!

The first book, GOOD GUY, has a grumpy hero, a sunny heroine, and emotion and humor in equal measure. I can't wait for you to fall in love with Levi and Jordan as they resist falling in love with each other.

Each book in the
Rookie Rebels series is completely standalone and won't require that you've read the original Chicago Rebels stories. But if you've missed them, you may as well catch up because there'll be plenty of cameos from the OG crew!

Jordan is about to get an interview that will launch her reporting career into the big leagues. A chance to interview the newest and oldest rookie NHL player Levi Hunt. Except she's eyed for the job because she has an inside connection... as in he was part of her deceased husband's green beret unit.

What makes it even more awkward is that Jordan thinks she launched herself on Levi and kissed at her husband's funeral in her grief and that's why he doesn't like her.

However, what Jordan doesn't know is that Levi has loved her from the moment he saw her and that he doesn't hate her at all. And that maybe that kiss wasn't accidental.

And now Jordan has to get an amazing interview that no one else could catch from the person she is sure hates her. At the same time, Levi is reluctant to open up about his past and reveal anything that will cause people to throw pity his way.

This book was a great read and I loved all the characters. Jordan was a fun personality to follow and she was relatable in how she saw the world. Levi's followed suit with the typical grump-to-love storyline, but it works well here.

All the other supporting characters were wonderfully constructed and well-played. It goes to show that there are plenty of branch-off stories that could be had from these characters.

Kate Meader is easily becoming an auto-buy author for me, I've really enjoyed every book I've read by her and Good Guy is no exception.

Levi was on track to go pro with his hockey career, but decided to put it on hold and join the Army, where he went Special Forces. Now he's out of the Army and has somehow landed with the Chicago Rebels making his NHL debut much later than normal. He's a major interest to the hockey world so his bosses inform him that the press will be doing a profile on him. Something he's really not interested in, but he'll suck it up. Until he finds out who the reporter is...a woman he should not have kissed the night she buried her husband and his best friend.

It's hard enough being a woman in a male dominated world, now her job is hanging in the balance and she's got to write a story about the grumpiest rookie in the league, one who appears to hate her. She'll do what she has to do get the story, only in doing so she might also lose her heart.

While this book dealth with some heavy subject matter it was done so well. The characters had so much depth and the humor throughout the story was so smart and well placed. I loved Levi so much. His relationships with his teammates and friends and with Jordan were just great. There's a reason this book is called Good Guy and it's because they is exactly who Levi is, even though he keeps it all hidden. I really enjoyed Jordan's chatacter as well and really appreciated her strength throughout. Her chatacter goes through a lot but handles it with such grace.

I honestly can't wait to continue the series and read more from Kate Meader. Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys the following:

    ✔️ Grumpy/Sunshine
    ✔️ Hockey Romance
    ✔️ Pining
    ✔️ Workplace Romance
    ✔️ Widow
    ✔️ Third Person Dual POV

I've had this book in my Kindle for a while now, and it was just calling to me this time. This is my first Kate Meader book, and I been missing out!

I love sports romance, but this is SO much more than that. It's a love story wrapped up in hockey and it deals with a lot of things, such as women in sports and homelessness, but it didn’t make me feel overwhelmed. And it didn't take anything away from Levi and Jordan's story.

It was clear to see I was going to love Levi because he’s everything I love in a hero. He's grumpy and closed-off. He's had it rough as a kid, but he turned it around. He's not your typical athlete, interested in the millions or the puck bunnies – he chose to leave it behind to serve his country instead, and now he may be the oldest hockey rookie ever. And his heart... he really is a good guy.
It took me a bit to warm up to Jordan. She's a sports journalist, and while I get her passion for her job, it seemed at times like it was all she cared about. Her love story with her dead husband didn't fully convince me, and it felt like it was more about them being used to and comfortable around each other than actual love.

Levi and Jordan’s husband served together in the Green Berets, and Levi came home while Jordan’s husband didn’t. On the day of his funeral, they kissed, and neither of them was able to let go of it. Maybe for different reasons, maybe for the same ones, deep down.
They haven’t been together after that, and now Jordan has come to do a profile on him. It’s all about keeping it professional... you guessed it, until it’s not.

It’s not easy for someone like Levi to open up, so Jordan obviously has her work cut out for her, while they both have to come to terms with what happened before and what’s happening now.
The story is told in dual POV and you can clearly see their feelings for each other, and how things are perceived differently by different people. And I love that they communicated. Both of them are able to read each other quite well, which only added to the realness of the story for me.

Love wins in the end. It isn't easy, it takes some letting go from both of them, of the past, of feelings of unworthiness, of feeling inferior. It takes owning up to what you really want, and realizing what’s really important.
And that epilogue... Ms. Meader, I was laughing, and had a giant lump in my throat at the same time.

Wonderful book. I am definitely reading the rest of this series!

The Chicago Rebels hockey players get better with each story. Levi is definitely the grumpy, strong and silent type and Jordan is the complete opposite. They have history together which doesn't help now they've met again and sparks fly every time they're together. A second chance love story.
