      Chapter 1

      Life’s Hard

      Helen McGregor walked to the pig pen of their small farm in rural Australia carrying a heavy sack of pig food in her shoulder. She wore her usual farm work clothes which was composed of her black rubber boots and old camouflage pants. She wore her old and almost tattered black t-shirt which had an emblem of a famous rock and roll band on it.

      She also wore her now old and tattered camouflage cap which was a memento of her army days. She was now in her 40’s but somehow she had managed to retain her youthful looks. She was well tanned and her slightly muscular but still sexy body was proof that she really did hard work in her family’s pig farm.

      Karen, her oldest teenage child, was together with her. She also carried a sack of pig food in her shoulder, but it was smaller and much lighter than the one her mother was carrying in her shoulder.

      She was about to turn 18. She bore a striking resemblance to her mother although she was petite, unlike her mother who was a bit muscular but still sexy. She wore a tattered sweatshirt and cut jeans. She also wore pink rubber boots.

      It was early in the morning and the sun was barely up. The pig pen was still a bit dark in some places but the pigs they were tending there were already wide awake and grunting noisily.

      Do you think we’ll get good money with them, mother? said Karen as she opened her sack of pig food and started putting them in the food trays for the pigs.

      I hope so, Karen, said Helen as she too opened the bag of pig food she was carrying, your father just got cured of cancer and we could really use the money. We’re deep in debt as it is.

      The bankers are greedy people, said Karen, they knew that father was sick before of cancer, yet they still expected us to pay our debt to them immediately.

      Don’t be too harsh on the bank, said Helen as she smiled and began putting pig food from her sack of pig food into the food trays for the pigs, the only reason they wanted to collect on their debt to us is because they think that your father would die of cancer before. They only wanted to make sure that they would get their money back.

      You’re too kind, mother, said Karen, even though people are shitting on you, you still think that they have a good reason for doing so.

      You won’t be a happy person if you go on thinking that everyone is a crook and is bad, said Helen, that’s no way to live. You must still see the good in life and in others, no matter what.

      But life’s unfair, mother, said Karen, we’re already in debt even before daddy had cancer. He may be cured of cancer, but we’re up to our heads in debt.

      Don’t you ever say these words if your father is around, said Helen as her face turned red, I don’t want your father to think that he’s just a burden to us now.

      I’m sorry, mother, said Karen as she realized the precarious mental condition of her father, it was wrong for me to say what I had just said.

      Helen embraced her daughter, Karen, I know that things are tough, but we’ve survived the worst, right? At least your father has been cured of his cancer.

      Karen suddenly smiled as she saw the piglets in the pig pen playing, I still hate selling our pigs, mother. We take care of them for months and in the end we know that they’ll be just slaughtered for food.

      You really have to be tough, Karen, you’re almost a grown woman now, said Helen as she smiled, life’s tough. It’s either eat or get eaten these days. You should already know this by now.

      That’s why I’m gonna be a vegan one day, mom, said Karen, I don’t want to eat animals anymore.

      Helen suddenly looked at her watch, Speaking of eating, it’s almost breakfast time. Your father must have prepared breakfast already. 

      Helen and Karen went inside the house and into the kitchen. Helen saw her husband, Dan, was still cooking their breakfast of eggs and bacon. She went near Dan as he was cooking breakfast and kissed him lightly on his cheek.

      How’s your day going?, asked Dan as he continued frying the eggs and bacon in the frying pan, Breakfast is almost finished. I’ve prepared the toast and coffees are already in the table.

      Don’t worry about us, darling, said Helen to Dan, we’re just fine. How about you? How are you feeling now?

      She looked at Dan’s thin face. His face looks very haggard especially since he hasn’t shaved in days. His body was thin too. His old and tattered sweater cannot hide this. Even his old jeans cannot hide his thin legs. He has been cured of cancer for several months already, but he was still weak and cannot do a lot of hard and very physical work.

      I’m sorry that I cannot help you yet with farm work, said Dan, when I get well, I promise I’ll make it up to you.

      The last member of the family, the youngest child of Dan and Helen soon entered the kitchen. He was about 15 but looks more mature than his age. He was thin but muscular and is tall for his age. He wore a simple t-shirt and jeans. As soon as he sat on the kitchen table, the first thing he did was to pour himself a glass of milk.

      Don’t finish up all the milk, Darryl, said Karen, save a little for us. You’re always hogging the milk.

      I’m a growing boy, sis, said Darryl as he nearly laughed, I need to drink a lot of milk so I’ll grow big and strong.

      You’ll grow big and strong if you help us in the farm, said Karen, all you do all day is look at your computer and surf.

      I help around in the farm whenever I’m needed, said Darryl, what I do with my me time is my own business.

      Don’t be too hard on your brother, Karen, said Helen, he does help out in the farm although I wish he’d do more.

      That’s right, Darryl, said Dan, the more you help us in the farm, the more we’ll probably earn. We really could use the money.

      But I’m already doing my part on the farm, protested Darryl, besides, what I’m doing is more important than farm work. I’m trying to make money online.

      Have you earned money with any of your online ventures, Darryl?, asked Dan, Do you think that there’s really money with online work?

      I’ve had a lot of views in YouTube, father, said Darryl, my ad revenues were nearly 20 dollars last month.

      20 dollars?, said Dan as he rubbed his forehead with his fingers, Why don’t you just hunt instead or gather what you can in the forest? I bet you’ll earn more than 20 dollars a day.

      But with an online business, you just make one video and wait while the money pours in forever, said Darryl, you can’t do this with normal jobs like hunting and farming.

      I give up son, said Dan as he sighed, you and your easy money schemes are beyond my understanding.

      Let your son be, said Helen as she smiled, "he does his part in this farm. What he does with his own time is his own business. Who knows? He might just
