The Spanish Verbs & Phrases Workbook For Adult Beginners - Audrey Moon
Introduction
Once there was a woman named Hayley who met a man named Rodrigo. She was from the United States and Rodrigo was from Mexico, but that didn’t stop their love from flourishing. At first, Hayley was looking at life through rose-colored glasses, but after a while there was something that was weighing on her: the language barrier was slowly starting to affect her relationship. Even though Rodrigo spoke English relatively well, she felt she was being selfish for making him speak in a language other than his own every time they met. She then came to the conclusion that the only way to truly respect her partner was learning his language and his customs. Learning Spanish was the answer to her problem!
Hayley put in the extra effort and enrolled in a Spanish course, but soon realized she didn’t have the time to keep up with the group, so she was forced to quit. Disheartened, she was on the verge of throwing in the towel when her lovely partner surprised her with a gift: this very Spanish workbook! Hayley was so happy with the sweet gesture she began studying right away, this time at her own pace. In a short period of time, she was able to properly pronounce Spanish sounds, introduce herself, tell anecdotes, and effectively communicate with other Spanish speakers, including her partner!
Hayley’s story is proof that everything is possible if you put your mind to it, if you have the right motivation and, most importantly, if you have the right materials to do so! This book is written to suit learners who are beginning their Spanish journey and wish to follow a conversation-forward approach. Our aim is for you to develop your skills in a Spanish-speaking context and interact with others without feeling insecure. To help you get there, each chapter is designed to perfect different aspects of everyday scenarios, with common phrases, key verbs and essential vocabulary lists to immerse yourself in this wonderful language. Grammar explanations are included throughout these pages, but unlike other books, which go on and on with boring details, our only objective is for you to use grammar as a way of becoming more fluent in conversation.
Because this book was written by native speakers and language specialists, you will get privileged access to learning shortcuts and popular expressions you know Latin Americans actually use!
In The Spanish Verbs & Phrases Workbook For Adult Beginners, you will find eight concise yet complete chapters, each featuring a different daily activity or skill to focus on:
In chapter one, the first step of your journey, you will immerse yourself in some Spanish essentials, such as pronunciation basics, sentence structure, personal pronouns, Spanish gender and number, and verb conjugation, the cornerstones of every language.
In chapter two, you will have at your disposal greeting and farewell expressions, key phrases to use in conversation (like please
, thank you
) and different ways of introducing yourself with common verbs like ser/estar (to be
) and tener (to have
). After this chapter, you will be able to talk about yourself with ease and you will know how to ask other people questions about themselves.
In chapter three, you will understand how to talk about time in different ways and how Spanish conjugation works in the present simple tense. You will also dive head first in the world of traveling, with key vocabulary and phrases to make plans and reservations at a hotel.
In chapter four, you will learn how to move around a Spanish-speaking city in Latin America like a local, with essential phrases to ask and give directions. You will also focus on how to give instructions using the imperative mood, how to describe different places and locations and how to name common buildings within an urban landscape.
In chapter five, you will acquire different strategies to talk about your family tree, like explaining your relationship with different people, indicating possession, and describing appearance, personality and marital status.
In chapter six, you will get to know the vast universe of shopping, with native expressions for prices and deals, signaling different objects and describing them through their color, shape and size. You will also become an expert shopper with long vocabulary lists about items of clothing, stationery and household items for every room of your home! After this chapter, you will be familiar with essential phrases and questions you can use at different stores, such as the bazaar, the grocery store, the retail store and more.
In chapter seven, you will polish your cutlery at the dinner table when discussing the different meals of the day, with key vocabulary on delicious food (meats, dairy products, fruits, vegetables and common dishes) and refreshing drinks. Then, you will learn different food-related verbs, adjectives to describe dishes, cooking methods and expressing preferences and tastes with the verb preferir and other popular expressions. At the end of this chapter, you will be able to easily engage in conversation at a restaurant with essential phrases for daily interactions.
Finally, in chapter eight, you will end your Spanish path as a beginner after learning how to use past and future verb tenses with confidence, which will allow you to tell anecdotes to your loved ones and practice your reading comprehension skills with some Spanish stories.
This is just the tip of the iceberg! You will discover many more topics that will take you from beginner to intermediate in no time.
The Spanish Verbs & Phrases Workbook For Adult Beginners is perfect for people who are not afraid of marching to the beat of their own drum; each section includes a chapter takeaway to recap the most important topics and an exercise section to check your progress! At the end of this book, you will also find an answer key so you can autocorrect without the guidance of a teacher.

Enfrenta los obstáculos a medida que se presenten, no pierdas energía temiendo lo que pueda haber en el futuro
– Isabel Allende
Before we begin with the actual verbs and phrases that you came looking for in this book, it is important that you have some basic notions on how Spanish works. So, in this chapter, we will dive into pronunciation, construction of sentences and verb conjugation. Of course, we will see all of these topics more thoroughly as we navigate this book, but it is important that you understand these notions to get the most out of the phrases you’ll see throughout the book. More specifically, in this chapter you’ll learn:
The basics of Spanish pronunciation
The Spanish sentence order
The personal pronouns in Spanish
All about gender and number
The definite and indefinite articles
An introduction to verb conjugations, tenses and moods
Let’s get started!
Pronunciation Basics
Vowels
Let’s start with good news! Luckily, Spanish vowel sounds are more straight-forward than English vowel sounds—there are only five vowel sounds!
A sounds similar to English ah
E sounds similar to English eh
I sounds similar to English ee
O sounds similar to English oh
U sounds similar to English oo
Written in this way, all of these vowel sounds seem a little long, right? Well, good news is that, in Spanish, vowel length isn’t a factor in pronunciation. Vowels can be spoken longer or shorter and the meaning of the word would still be the same!
Tricky Consonant Sounds
Consonant sounds are a bit trickier, but most consonant sounds are somewhat similar to English consonant sounds, so you could get away with following the English pronunciations. However, some Spanish consonant sounds are particularly difficult for English speakers.
The letter Ñ (which is pronounced eh-nyeh
) is pronounced like a conjunction of N and Y in English, like in the name of rapper Kanye.
Consonant H isn’t actually tricky in Spanish, it’s pretty straightforward but different from English. What’s the difference? In Spanish, the H is silent. So, whenever you see an H, simply don’t pronounce it, pretend it isn’t there! Easy peasy, right?
Another tricky Spanish consonant sound is the double R sound, which is probably the one that English-speakers find the most difficult. To pronounce the Spanish rolling R, we should position our mouth in a similar way to how we would to pronounce an English D sound. However, instead of making a small movement with the tongue, we should make a trill sound.
Now, let’s focus on consonants that aren’t tricky to pronounce but may be hard to understand how to pronounce if we only read them. For instance, LL and Y in Spanish are pronounced in almost the same way. The tricky thing is that in some Spanish-speaking places LL and Y are pronounced like an SH, but in some other places they are pronounced like an English J in words like jelly
.
Two pairs of consonants that are also pronounced in the same way in Spanish are B and
