A Dream of Wolves - Rhiannon Futch
One
Blaze
Chad told me to stay at the house once I arrive. He knows. He knows that woman didn’t go up in flames all by herself. Knows that his sister is a murderer. I didn’t have to set her on fire. There had to have been another way to stop her. I should have done more, found another way. I should have been studying more with my magic. Her death is all my fault. She didn’t have to die.
Matthew steers the car into my driveway, puts it in park. We sit here for a moment in silence. He starts to speak and I think I can’t take it if he tells me he hates me or that he can’t look at me again. You don’t have to stay. I understand if you need to go. I’ll be fine here at the house.
Opening the car door, I get out and slam it as I run for the house.
He is right behind me when I open the door, anyway. Following me in the house, he pushes the door closed and pulls me into his arms. He feels nice, comforting. My arms slip round his waist as my head leans on his shoulder. He says, I’m not going anywhere. You are where I belong. And you are not okay right now. There is not a chance in hell that I will leave you alone with your thoughts. Come, let’s get you seated. We need to research your grandmother and find out who that woman was. Maybe it will help distract you.
I let him lead me to the couch, staying there while he grabs my laptop from the bedroom. Every time I close my eyes all I can see is her face as she burned. The way her flesh seemed to melt and drip off her bones. Matthew sets the laptop in front of me on the coffee table and I type in the password. He quickly realizes I am not going to take the lead on researching my grandmother and turns the laptop to face him as his fingers fly over the keyboard while he sits on the floor in front of the coffee table.
There is a knock at the door, and I get up to answer it. Chad is standing there, still in uniform. He takes one look at me and his arms come up, pulling me into a bear hug. Where is Matthew? Why isn’t he comforting you? What happened out there?
I can’t really talk with my face pressed into his chest and I realize my face was wet when he smooshed me into this hug. I must have been crying and didn’t realize it. I bring up my hands and push against his chest. He releases me but puts his hands on my shoulders as if he is worried I’ll fall down without the extra support. Why are you crying?
I’m crying because I’m a murderer. Because all I see when I close my eyes is her face as she burned. Are you going to arrest me? You probably should.
Chad sighs and pulls me over beside him as he moves further into the house and shuts the door behind him. No, I am not here to arrest you. In fact, I am fairly certain we have your case pretty well closed. But why is Matthew sitting there on your computer instead of concerning himself with your well-being?
Matthew meets my eyes at that and looks surprised. Because I didn’t know she was crying? She wasn’t when I started researching.
He stands, Blaze, can I get you some tea? Or anything? Do you want to sit here with me while I research your grandmother? Would you like for me to just hold you and put off the research for now?
No, I’ll be fine. I’m just coming to terms with being a murderer.
Chad gives my shoulders a squeeze. Sit down and tell me what actually happened. Then we’ll decide whether or not you are a murderer.
I sit on the couch and Matthew talks as he paces, telling him about recognizing the woman as one of the women that kidnapped him. How she had incapacitated him with her magic.
Picking up where he left off, I tell my part. I was hiding beside the car when she came around it. She brought her hands up to shoot at me and I threw mine up just to block whatever she was going to do. I wasn’t expecting… the fire. It just shot out of my hands, like it had a life of its own. I didn’t know how to stop it. When I did get my hands to close, there wasn’t much left of her. I killed her because I couldn’t stop the fire. She didn’t have to die. There had to be another way to stop her.
Chad comes to sit next to me on the couch. He grabs me by the shoulders and turns me to face him. Listen, that lady fully intended to kill you. She is well known. The file we have on her is thick. She kills people for money. The only reason we haven’t had her in a prison is because she always uses magic. Always. So we can’t pin it on her in the human world, even though we know it was her. Hell, half the time she sticks around the scene just to watch us clean up after her.
What? Really?
Really. She was hunting you. She definitely would have killed the both of you. What you did was self defense. Now, what I want to know is, why was she hunting you?
Um, it probably definitely has something to do with the preacher that is after me. I don’t know why, but it looks like he hired my grandmother to have Matthew kidnapped. They might be a little upset about the rescue.
Chad frowns. What rescue and why didn’t you call me?
I didn’t call you because you wouldn’t have let me go in first to distract them while Falina and Frankie went and found Matthew.
You’re fuckin’ right, I wouldn’t have! What do you mean, you went in first to distract them?
I mean exactly what I said. It was me they wanted. So I went in and bought them time to get Matthew out. Besides, it’s not like I can’t defend myself. Fuck, I just murdered a woman earlier tonight.
That wasn’t murder and you still should have called me.
I had to do it. They had Matthew in a cage in the basement of the church. Everything didn’t go exactly the way we planned, but everyone in our group got out safely.
His expression changes to surprise as he says, Wait, the church fire was you?
I look away, ashamed of the death and destruction that follows me like some cursed cloud. It was.
Holy shit Blaze. Why is he after you?
I’m not really sure? It started out as James trying to get me back, but why would they all get in on it this hard? It doesn’t make sense for the Pastor to be after me this way just so James can have the girlfriend of his choice.
Chad nods and says, It doesn’t make any sense. You’re my sister and that makes you special to me, but it seems weird that other people would go to these lengths. There must be something more that we are missing.
Matthew
My phone rings at the worst possible time. Looking at it, I see it’s Fen. Well, I call him Fen. Should I explain to them that his name is Fenrir, and he is the Fenrir? That Odin is still not friendly with him and he is definitely not friendly with Odin? Maybe I should just let them figure it out. It isn’t my story to tell. Walking away so I don’t disturb their talk, I answer. Are you here yet?
Your pants are in a fine twist, aren’t they? I’m just getting to town. You didn’t send me the address.
I’ll send my location now.
Fen ends the call without even saying goodbye. I hope Blaze won’t hate him. I need to work closely with him, and I can’t do that if she refuses to have anything to do with him. Seating myself in front of her laptop, I work on researching her grandmother some more while Chad talks with Blaze. I am finding shockingly little about the old witch. There’s another knock at the door and Chad tells Blaze he will get it. She nods, and he walks to the door. He opens it to find Frankie facing the other way. I hear him ask her, Who was that?
Frankie says, No idea. Some rude asshole. Want me to bring him back so you can check?
My stomach drops. It had to be Fen. Chad says, Yes, bring him back.
She focuses a little and what I assume must be Fen comes tumbling back to the yard in front of the house. I race to the door as Fen stands up. He’s actually with us. I’ll bring him in with me after we talk.
Frankie giggles as she walks into the house behind Chad, who leaves the door standing open. Nosy. Fen, you just got here. How did you piss her off so fast?
Fen shrugs, "It’s a fucking talent. What can I say? Do we need to be here with
