RELATIONSHIP RULES
Confidence Creating for Young Women
Introduction
Somewhere in my late teens-early 20s, my grandma said, Find somebody whose bad habits you think you can live with.
Thus began my awareness of having rules and standards around dating and finding someone to spend my life with.
Arguably, tha most important decision a woman can make is her choice of a mate, who she'll intimately spend her life with. By the end of this book, I hope you’ll have started some relationship rules of your own.
Life Lessons
This is a life-wisdom book—six decades worth. One thing that happens over time is a longer view looking back, one that sees patterns, connections, and how these relationship rules and stories played out. We marvel at who we've become, and how many others had a role in that. An off-hand remark, a chance meeting, friendships, jobs we stumbled into, and opportunities that opened.
What's here is what has remained worthwhile, respectful, helpful, timeless, practical, and interesting. This is what I share as a friend, sister, aunt, great-aunt, confidant. They’re well-seasoned womanly words on navigating life and relationships that have made life and relationships healthier, easier, and more fun. What’s in here has been life-tested—both as a single woman (into my thirty’s), and as a married woman for thirty-plus more.
Whether your relationships are family, friends, professional associates, strangers you happen to meet, or someone you’re interested in knowing better, this will offer (entertaining) insight, ideas, and an invitation to make your own confidence-creating happy-life and healthy-relationship rules.
Rules are standards
Rules are essentially standards and guidelines we create for ourselves—standard operating procedures—based on what we know about ourselves: what makes us happy, what our spirit needs to fly free, and what our light requires to shine bright. These worked for me; you get to create your own. Use what’s here as a starting place, an idea playground.
How I know
Life School—including Grandma, Mom, and a house full of men—seven of them—to experience lots of habits and observe my reactions to. Some habits were No big deal; others were a definite No Way if I have a say! Dad and six brothers provided a daily playground to observe, experience, and study... I learned exactly what bad habits I could live with—and which ones I would never put up with, no matter how pretty the packaging. Some habits are deal breakers. I knew what some of those were for me, for my happiness and peace; and made choices accordingly.
On the heels of Grandma’s words, I started learning—paying attention to—my inner workings in relation to others. Other wisdom came from Grandma, too: Expect the same of your man (or friends or boss) that you do of yourself.
In other words, whatever standards I held myself to—honesty, respect, faithfulness, decency, compassion—I had a right to expect those same standards of any person I kept company with.
Again, I listened, observed, and paid attention to how I was being treated and how I felt in tha company of this person.
I added rules over time as new experiences brought new insights. For example, not only bad habits, but also good habits to notice—ones my soul and spirit absolutely required, every day, for me to shine, thrive, and enjoy.
We each get our own private schools and learning opportunities. In my experience, they’re very specific and personal to us.
I share this life with a beautiful man, my husband, Michael Robichaud, and our furry feline family. Michael and I found each other in our 30s. (We’d been in tha same place at tha same time at least three occasions before; wasn’t our time yet…) So, I know and appreciate being single and 30—both the challenges and opportunities…and
