The Cries of Jesus From the Cross: A Fulton Sheen Anthology Kindle Edition
As death approaches, the human heart speaks its greatest words of love to those it holds most dear. So it was with Jesus who in His final hours gave us seven last "words" rich with spiritual meaning for every human soul.
For the first time ever, Archbishop Fulton Sheen's complete writings and reflections on Christ's last words have been compiled into this one book. Sheen shows how the seven words are, in fact, a full catechism on the spiritual life. From them, you'll learn the secrets to living the Beatitudes, ways to avoid the deadly vices of anger, envy, lust, and pride, and how to cultivate the heavenly virtues of fortitude, prudence, justice, and charity.
Few books are such an inspiring call to sanctity, and few books are such a spiritual powerhouse. With Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen as your guide, you'll also learn:
- Why, during His Passion, Jesus never proclaimed his innocence.
- Why Jesus appealed to His Father to forgive, but did not Himself forgive directly.
- What Jesus' third word from the Cross says about lust.
- Why, like Jesus, the most innocent among us must suffer.
- Why darkness covered the earth after Jesus spoke his fourth word.
- The seven words spoken unto Jesus while He hung on the Cross "š€š" and what they reveal about the impact of Christ's Passion on your soul.
- What the Passion says about judging others (and why it's an assault against hope).
- How the conversion of the good thief is the key to the conversion of our modern world.
- Why you and I can sin a thousand times and be forgiven, and the angels who have sinned but once are eternally unforgiven.
- How envy becomes the denial of all justice and love.
- The difference between the virtue of hope and the emotion of hope.

Fulton J. Sheen
(1895–1979)
Fulton John Sheen was born in El Paso, Illinois, in 1895. In high school, he won a three-year university scholarship, but he turned it down to pursue a vocation to the priesthood. He attended St. Viator College Seminary in Illinois and St. Paul Seminary in Minnesota. In 1919, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois. He earned a licentiate in sacred theology and a bachelor of canon law at the Catholic University of America and a doctorate at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium.
Sheen received numerous teaching offers but declined them in obedience to his bishop and became an assistant pastor in a rural parish. Having thus tested his obedience, the bishop later permitted him to teach at the Catholic University of America and at St. Edmund’s College in Ware, England, where he met G.K. Chesterton, whose weekly BBC radio broadcast inspired Sheen’s later NBC broadcast, The Catholic Hour (1930–1952).
In 1952, Sheen began appearing on ABC in his own series, Life Is Worth Living. Despite being given a time slot that forced him to compete with Milton Berle and Frank Sinatra, the dynamic Sheen enjoyed enormous success and in 1954 reach tens of millions of viewers, non-Catholics as well as Catholics.
When asked by Pope Pius XII how many converts he had made, Sheen responded, “Your Holiness, I have never counted them. I am always afraid if I did count them, I might think I made them, instead of the Lord.”
Sheen gave annual Good Friday homilies at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, led numerous retreats for priests and religious, and preached at summer conferences in England.
“If you want people to stay as they are,” he said, “tell them what they want to hear. If you want to improve them, tell them what they should know.” This he did, not only in his preaching but also in the more than ninety books he wrote. His book, Peace of Soul was sixth on the New York Times best-seller list.
Sheen served as auxiliary bishop of New York (1951–1966) and as bishop of Rochester (1966–1969).
His two great loves were for the Blessed Mother and the Eucharist. He made a daily holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament, from which he drew strength and inspiration to preach the gospel and in the presence of which he prepared his homilies. “I beg [Christ] every day to keep me strong physically and alert mentally in order to preach His gospel and proclaim His Cross and Resurrection,” he said. “I am so happy doing this that I sometimes feel that when I come to the good Lord in Heaven, I will take a few days’ rest and then ask Him to allow me to come back again to this earth to do some more work.”
The good Lord called Fulton Sheen home in 1979. His television broadcasts, now on tape, and his books continue his earthly work of winning souls for Christ. Sheen’s cause for canonization was opened in 2002, and in 2012 Pope Benedict XVI declared him “Venerable.”

- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2021This book is a collection of Fulton Sheen’s talks and writings. It is a beautiful resource for praying through Lent or growing closer to Jesus through entering into His Passion at any time of year. The individual writings are short and you don’t have to read them straight through in order. You can read one writing from each of the 7 sections (the 7 last words of Christ) or read a few writings each week. I am using it with a prayer group right now and we all agree - it is a book we will return to year after year.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2020I am in the processes of reading this book, almost to the end. Archbishop Fulton Sheen has explained again the mysteries of the Words Christ spoke from the Cross. As I read the Bible I want to understand more of what is being said, reading this book has helped a lot. Contemplating on the Words and being able to understand them better makes it more enjoyable to read. Archbishop Fulton Sheen has always made understanding our faith easier and brings home how we should be living our faith...even now! Great and interesting reading, I would recommend this book to others searching what the Words spoken from the Cross by Christ mean.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2020It took me a while to finish this book, but only because each chapter is so packed with depth and beauty that one has to stop and think about it for a while. It takes Our Lord's Passion and opens Our eyes to aspects of modernity that supply wounded Him during His three hours on the cross. There were times when reading it was like looking in a mirror. I recognized myself in each hammer blow to Our Lord's arms and feet. This book is definitely one everyone needs to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2023This chronicle lays out God's love for us and how we can truly return that love. These are my feelings and thoughts.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2019I have only finished the first 2 of the last "words" of Jesus as each one has 7 essays, but they are impressive with much food for thought. You can tell that Bishop Sheen had meditated deeply on this subject, probably during his daily Holy Hours in front of the Blessed Sacrament. I read part of them each day during Lent to my husband, but they were longer than I expected so it's taking me longer to get through them. Highly recommended.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2019I can hardly put this book down. Venerable Fulton Sheen has written an amazing book that goes straight to your heart. The 7 phrases Jesus said from the Cross pretty much sum up his whole purpose for teaching. I have been stressing over how to forgive our politicians, Hollywood elite, and the MSM for their abortion, infanticide issues. Bishop Sheen makes it very clear what Jesus meant when he spoke those unforgettable phrases from the cross. I am praying harder for those who are determined to flaunt themselves in the face of our most Beloved Church, that their hearts be softened and find their way back to our Lord. Amazing Book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read!
This is such a wonderful book that is a must-read. Archbishop Fulton Sheen has such a beautiful way of writing that I sometimes had to read a sentence a few times in order to fully appreciate its meaning. I think reading this anthology gives a much greater understanding of the meaning of the seven last words of Lord Jesus Christ. I recommend it to everyone, especially Catholics who may not realize the importance of these words and what these words mean for our own lives. What a blessing to have discovered the wonderful writing of Fulton Sheen!
