Joseph D’Agnese is a journalist and author who has written for children and adults alike. He’s been published in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Wired, Discover, and other national publications. In a career spanning more than twenty years, his work has been honored with awards in three vastly different areas—science journalism, children’s literature, and mystery fiction. His science articles have twice appeared in the anthology Best American Science Writing. His children’s book, Blockhead: The Life of Fibonacci, was an honoree for the Mathical Book Prize—the first-ever prize for math-themed children’s books.     The Sweatergeist

    The first time Bleecker met Leopold Box, the man was sipping a mint julep under a whirling porch fan. The late afternoon sun canted through the gingerbread and lit the rest of the house behind him, which was painted canary yellow and cream white. It was a gorgeous example of a nineteenth-century Victorian and would have looked at home in downtown Natchez or Eufala or even Stowe. But the house wasn’t in any of those places.

    Would you like a drink, Mr. Bleecker? Box said.

    Bleecker climbed the steps to the grey deck of the porch, leaving East Ninety-Eighth Street behind.

    Water would be fine, he said.

    I’m in a position to do you one better, sir, Box continued. Fresh squeezed lemonade? He waited, overly delighted with himself, for Bleecker’s surprised reaction. (Bleecker conjured one up so as not to disappoint him.) And you have a choice. We can do this here on the porch or we can go up to my office.
