Fredrika (Cloned Evil Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

It would be a lot easier to break into the assassination game if her targets stayed dead.

If she wanted her own money, Red knew she would have to start getting her own jobs. With her peculiar accent, it was hard to get people to take her seriously, but a job falls into her lap. With Bea’s help, she’s easily able to get it done.

Before Red can collect her pay, her estranged superhero sister, Gigi, comes back into her life desperate for help. She’s been seeing ghosts and, when she brings Red's first target back to life, Red is not sure if helping Gigi is worth the trouble she brings with her.

Tanya Lisle is a novelist from the Metro Vancouver, British Columbia who has series littered across genres from supernatural horror to young adult fantasy. She began writing in elementary school, when she started turning homework assignments into short stories and continued this trend well into university. While attending Simon Fraser University, she developed an appreciation for public domain crossovers and cross-platform narratives. She has a shelf full of notebooks with more story ideas than pens lost to the depths of her bag. Now she writes incessantly in hopes of finishing all of them.

Thankfully, her cat, Remy, has figured out how to shut off Tanya’s computer when she needs to take a break.

This is a rather difficult book to get into, but patience is eventually rewarded. It is advisable to read 'Origins (Cloned Evil Book 1)' first, for the back-story of Fredrika, Beatrice, and Georgina.
Fredrika (Red) is a villain with the power to fly. It's hard to like her; she is very selfish, a loner, and psychopathic, caring only for her family and friends. But that's what happens when you are raised as a villain. She fears that her girlfriend, Star, is cheating on her. Talking about it with sister Bea, another villain who has a project of her own, gives no satisfaction, and Aunt Jez is not sympathetic. The Hero organization, Apex, seems interested in investigating, which seems weird. Bea's secret project seems to be successful. Things get complicated when the heist planned by Mom (Lady Magdalene), Jez, and Red goes seriously wrong. Red kills her target, Nostra's pet, Jason, and now Nostra's out for revenge. Gigi somehow brings him back to life and things get even more confused. Bea knows what's going on, but has a silencing curse on her, so can't say anything about it. It seems Bea's father, who is Shroud of the Grave, was previously just an unknown sperm donor, but now has come back and wants Bea for some mysterious, but probably evil, purpose. Red has to rescue Bea, who's being held in a Nostra house by her father. Not until the final few pages is the mystery unraveled as Shroud and Gigi duel; then the story ends suddenly. To be continued in the next book, where things get a little clearer; and then in the final story sympathy and understanding finally emerge.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Quirky and Entertaining Read

I read Origins and loved it, waiting a long time for this book!

The first thing to know, it doesn't really look that way from the number system, but I feel you really need to read Origins first in order for this story to make sense.

Both stories have a lot of dark humor and a sarcastic 3rd person narrator. I loved that combo!

On the negative side, I have to say that in the beginning, I found Fredrika annoying. She has an obnoxious dialect and is insecure. I held in there because I loved Origins so much, and I'm glad I did.

The story is well-written, funny, tightly paced with lots of action, and the other characters are endearing. I got used to Red's quirks and they bugged me less as the story went on, then later in the book you find out (no spoilers!) that she is like that for a reason that ties into the plot. It helped that she wasn't like that for no reason.

Origins is about the mom, and these 3 books are about her cloned daughters. As Georgina was my favorite sister (even though both Red and the narrator continually bash her. So funny), I can't wait for the next one!

3.0 out of 5 stars A quirky read

I really, really wanted to rate this book higher. The plot is tight, the writing easy to read but Red. She wasn't the easiest character to empathise with, even once I got used to her unusual dialogue. It's the only weak spot in an otherwise amazing book.

    Will be buying the sequel!
