About the author

Leena Maria began to write stories as soon as she learned to write. Fairy stories, horse stories, fantasy stories… As a girl, after the family had gone to bed, she sat in the silence of the night and wrote. When she wasn’t writing, she illustrated her writings. She learned to paint of her own, and has had her work exhibited in several art exhibitions at home and abroad.
Then life happened - and though the writing continued, other things took over. After having fulfilled her childhood dream of studying Egyptology, there finally was time to reach for the other childhood dream of being an author. Her first series Nephilim Quest has now four books and the fifth and final one is coming out soon. The series is based on ancient human mythology and the history of ancient Egypt. These were written under the pen name Leena Maria. (#1 Shadowhunter, #2 Moon Daughter, #3 Amarna, #4 The Khopesh of the Gods)
Leena Maria holds the MA in Egyptology (the University of Manchester, UK). Though her studies were academic, her books celebrate the power of imagination. History is definitely not dry in Leena's novels!
Leena is also writing illustrated children’s books about ancient Egypt under her name Leena Pekkalainen. The first one came out in the fall of 2016 (How I Became a Mummy - Mr Mummific's tongue-in-cheek explanation about mummification for children of all ages) and the sequel (Mummies, Monsters and the Ship of Millions) came out in the fall on 2017. Her book Tutankhamun in My Own Hieroglyphs is traveling the world together with the KING TUT: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh exhibition on its world tour of ten cities. The third book of the Nephilim Quest series (Amarna) in now out.
Leena divides her time between researching ancient Egypt, and writing novels.
In addition to history, she has always been interested in human mythology, which weaves into her stories. Also animals and nature are close to her heart - thanks to the long childhood summers spent at the beautiful Finnish archipelago, observing birds, insects, sea and forest animals for hours on end. Ancient forests and the sea have an especially important place in her heart.
Leena Maria lives in the southwest corner of Finland, in Finland’s oldest city Turku which was established 800 years ago.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2025I received Shadow Hunter free and I bought the rest of the series after I had read part way through the 1st book. I LOVE THIS SERIES OF BOOKS. I am almost done with the last book of the series and I don't want it to end. The author has such a wonderful mind to build such a fantastic story. My daughter has purchased the first book and is reading it after I told her about it. I am not the best with words but I CAN'T PRAISE THIS SERIES ENOUGH!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2023I loved this series ❤️, it went by so quick and I need more! Leena is such awesome talent when it comes to writing I feel like I am connected to the characters evey step of the way.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2019It went too fast! I just love all the characters. And the twists. No spoilers, just chomping at the bits for quest. 4...
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2019Keeps your interest by the suspenseful writing and many surprises and plot swings included. I hated putting it away. If you're a fan of fantasy novels it's a must read. I thought this third book was the final one but I believe there is more to come. At least I hope so 😅
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2022It's not always easy for me to find books that I feel are well-written and interesting. I absolutely love this series and have often recommended to others. The detail, the world created within a world, the characters, all of it is very well done.
They are hearty sized books that flow well and keep me riveted the whole time.
If you had suggested I'd have any interest in books in which some settings are in ancient Egypt I would have called you crazy, it just never sounded that appealing. This series has inspired a different view however, and it's quite interesting to hear something like the name Amenhotep and to actually have some related knowledge come to mind now.
I have only one complaint...how long it takes between sequels. The first book came out in 2016. The second was in 2017, which isn't bad. It's certainly worth a year's wait. The third came out in 2019. Two years feels like forever when your eagerly waiting to find out what happens next. It is now 2022 and the fourth book is not complete. She appears to be a very busy woman, writing 4 or 5 different books at once. She seems to always be researching and learning, and her books benefit from that. I'm glad she is diverse, but VERY frustrated that she completes other books while I wait for the next one in this series. I at least had the comfort of knowing that the next book was to be the last. The story would be complete and the interminable waiting would be done. But then recently the author suggested that the 4th book may not be the final one in the series after all.
I will buy the next one, and if there's another after that I will buy that as well...if I'm still around (I'm not a spring chicken) and if I don't forget (given enough time between things I find that that happens). But I won't read them until the last book of the series comes out, if it ever does. If it actually does, I'll start over with book one and enjoy the while thong beginning to end.
I also have stopped recommending this series to anyone because I can't, in good faith, recommend a series that will leave them frustrated with waiting. If a last book in the series comes out, wrapping it all up, then I will recommend it again. Time will tell.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2019I am leaving this review since I received an advanced free copy. But I would be reading it anyway. I haven't finished yet but so far it is fantastic. I truly enjoyed the first two books of this series and hated to have to wait for the final book to be completed. But here it is in all of this its glory. The author weaves a time traveling tail full of intrigue, love and wonderful Egyptian history blended satisfyingly well. I would highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2019I was excited to receive my copy of Nephilim Quest 3 Amarna, to review. This third book of the series proved to be as interesting and well written as the earlier two. Thoroughly enjoyed the story and the interweaving if the fiction, with the well researched factual history of Ancient Egypt really draws you into the story. An excellent read leaving me excited for the next in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2019This book is a rare find. I was totally sucked into it. I now have to make sure I have read everything in this series. The settings, characters and plot are outstanding.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring beyond belief
Sorry but this just left me cold. Far too much Egyptian detail + not enough story - I’m afraid it left me frustrated. If there is a 4th book I doubt very much that I will buy it or read it.. very disappointing
