      Frustrated by every little thing going wrong all weekend—along with one giant snafu—Scarlett MacArthur gusted out a heavy breath.

      She raked her teeth over the corner of her lower lip. Remnants of an inhaled breakfast taunted her: sweet icing, tart cherry, creamy cheese. Along with a faint earthy nuttiness, from the double espresso that had chased the Danish down.

      Determined to right her day, one small accomplishment at a time, she stretched up on tiptoe, feet braced on an aluminum ladder’s top rung. Propped against one of the stainless steel shelving units along the side wall. Buried way back in the stockroom of her store, the Comic Book Portal.

      All alone. No employees. Zero customers.

      At noon.

      On the 4th of July. Busiest day of the year.

      Well, normally.

      As best she could figure, the patriotic holiday whirled into the perfect-storm for her clientele. Middle of summer. Geeky entrepreneurs. Sedate indoor activity.
