Eighteen months ago, Sophia Jones finally walked out on her unhappy life.

Nate McKinley is hesitant when his brother, Gabe, offers him the use of their home in the picturesque village of Wishington Bay. But he has a book to a write and an imploded marriage to recover from, so maybe a change of scene is exactly what he needs.

As Wishington Bay works its magic, friendship blossoms between Sophia and Nate. For Nate, finally feeling able to be himself with someone who is honest and down to earth is a revelation.

But Sophia has a secret and a jealous colleague is determined to blow her cover. Can she really keep her old life in the past or is it destined to destroy this new, happy one too?

Winter at Wishington Bay
maxine morrey

Hi there!

Thanks so much for looking at my books.

I love to write fun, uplifting romcoms that explore aspects of real life in an interesting way. Between the pages you will find relatable heroines, dreamy heroes and supportive friendships navigating life as best they can – just like the rest of us. There will be laughter, love, heartbreak and hope. And, if you’re a dog lover, you’ll be happy to hear that where I can get a four-legged friend into the story, I certainly will! However, the one thing you can be absolutely sure of is that there will always be a happy ending!

Personally, I have always loved reading to relax and escape from the real world. These are the type of books I love to both read and write. I hope that, if you choose any of my books, they will also provide a fun, relaxing escape for you too.

Thanks again for looking.

Happy reading!

Maxine xx

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Maxine has wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember and wrote her first (very short) book about an elf for school when she was ten.

Years passed and she continued to write but 'life' often got in the way. She has written articles on a variety of subjects, as well as a local history book and in 2015 she won a contract for her Christmas romcom, 'Winter's Fairytale'. Since then she has written many more 'romcoms with depth' and wants to encourage everyone to 'Read Yourself Happy'.

She is the best selling author of 'Things Are Looking Up', '#NoFilter', and the Kindle UK top ten read, 'The Christmas Project' among others.

In 2024, her book 'You've Got This' won The Romantic Comedy Award at the Romantic Novelists' Association award ceremony in London.

When not wrangling with words, she loves to read, sew and listen to podcasts. She can also often be found out on a gentle walk in nature, camera in hand.

I am a fan of this author and have several of her books in audible format that I have listened to more than a few times. This was a Kindle Unlimited book so I decided to read this book. I enjoyed it and am thinking of getting it on audible as I am a fan of Gloria Sanders and am very interested in hearing her take on these characters. I haven’t come across a Maxine Morrey book yet that isn’t at least a 4 star. They can seem slow in parts, but they build the story and the characters and they don’t rely on the “f” word or graphic sex to drive the plot. I want to read the rest of this series now, so here’s to more Wishington Bay!

This is a rather lovely story of a young woman brought up in royalty and her pursuit of peace by concealing her identity in a beautiful little village. The core of the story deals with a desperate desire to be in control of one's self and peace of mind. Our heroine fins a route to her dream of happiness by helping a visitor to the village to overcome some of the traits that she had conquered with success. All of her new life is suddenly plastered on all of the media outing her. You must read this to understand all that is broken and the resolution. Watch out for Corinne, though for sure.

I’d define this as a cozy contemporary romance… it’s got a lot of the elements you’d find in cozy mystery like cutesy scenery and events, adorable animal characters - but is romance-based rather than a mystery. Yes, the heroine Sophia is hiding something, but realistically it’s just because she wants a quiet life, and considering the way it’s eventually revealed she was demeaned and diminished by both her family and then her husband, I didn’t blame her in the least.

Nate’s also in Wishington Bay to escape; with a book deadline looming and an extremely high maintenance not-quite-ex-wife to manage, it’s honestly not at all convenient for him to be unexpectedly attracted to Sophia, which is why he’s a complete grump to her at first. Soon the sparks of attraction are flying, though Nate doesn’t know Sophia’s secret. And we all know that keeping major secrets at the start of any relationship is the kind of bad idea that’s bound to come back to bite you.

This was fairly cute, but there were a few things that I found frustrating. The character Corinne seemed to have the same scene repeated about five times - she’d flirt with Nate, be rude to Sophia, repeat - and after the second time, I was thinking, enough already. Move on and tell a different part of the story. The story got a bit saggy in the middle because of that scene constantly getting rehashed; it would have been better to cut some of that and write some more in around the black moment, because honestly I think that, and the finale, were very much rushed through.

A sweet story in a lot of ways, I enjoyed that the protagonists were a little older - late thirties/early forties - and I liked the dynamic between the two of them. There was very little to dislike about either Nate or Sophia, they were two nice people who deserved to find happiness, but I also felt there wasn’t much real conflict in the story, which is why it fell a little flat for me. I’ll give it four stars.

This is one of the best stories I have read recently. The whole atmosphere of Washington Bay , its lovely people, make you feel really good. The mystery about Sophie 's past is an added attraction.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous festive read!

If you're looking for all things Christmas and cosy and festive and romantic then this book is most definitely for you. It is so full of warmth and love that it made me smile. It's a simply gorgeous romance that's all about finding yourself again and finding that person that loves that true self and allows you to be it.

Visiting the town of Wishington Bay again did not disappoint, in fact the only thing that made me feel disappointed was the fact that I wanted to jump into the book and go and visit myself, and alas, I could not. I really wanted to be at the wreath making workshop with Carrie and Eloise and Sophia as it sounded like so much fun. I wanted to eat at Ned and Carrie's restaurant and sit and watch the waves. I wanted to hang out at Flora's gift shop, chat, drink tea and look at all the pretty trinkets she sold and I very much wanted to experience the Christmas light switch on. The whole vibe of the town just wraps you up in a warm hug.

I found Sophia so lovely and charming and was so happy to see her finding her way and becoming her own person. I was interested to learn about her past and what had caused her to run away and with every mention of her ex-husband and that old life, I was so proud of her for starting over and taking a chance on living life the way she wanted to. It took a lot of courage but the life she had created for herself made me smile. Her flat sounded extremely cosy and I loved the idea of her little Instagram feed with random pictures of Wishington Bay and cleaning tips. I liked that she was humble and down to earth and that she had created her happy. It was also fun to see her feisty side and how she could handle herself and be sarcastic when she needed to be. Having had to bite her tongue her whole life, I could understand her need to say how she felt and be honest. She wasn't mean about it but she stood up for herself when she needed to, for instance when large Australian men are rude.

I really loved Gabe in 'Coming Home to Wishington Bay' so it was so much fun to meet his brother. Where Gabe was more outgoing and chill, Nate is far more serious and moody, or so it seems at first. He's not been feeling like himself. He's stressed over work and dealing with divorce proceedings from a rather horrible wife. There's a lot going on in his life and he doesn't know how to relax or be himself anymore.

Sophia and Nate's banter was a lot of fun. I loved seeing their comfortable, easy friendship blossom. I enjoyed being a part of their walks and chatting over cups of tea as they got to know each other and how they began more and more to let go of their pasts and build their futures with each others help. It was a really lovely relationship to witness unfold.

There were so many gorgeous relationships in this book, one of my favourites being Carrie and Ned. It was wonderful to revisit them again as the two of them just make me smile. I love that they have the restaurant together and how they are such a good team and so family orientated. Furthermore, getting to see where Holly and Gabe were up to was rather heart-warming too.

'Winter as Wishington Bay' is such a delightful read and one you definitely want to add to your TBR pile this festive season. It's a beautiful romance to warm your heart and I highly recommend you pick up a copy today!

Easy chick lit story set in fictional town of Wishington Bay in UK. I enjoyed the characters and the setting of Wishington Bay, which reminded me of some of the towns in Devon and Cornwall we have visited in our travels.
