Blue Roan Colt Paperback – May 28, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
After four years on the bloody battlefields of Europe during World War II, Army Staff Sergeant Mark Shaw returns home to Arizona with nothing but the hope of living a quiet existence and chasing the sunset on horseback forevermore. Scarred by the war in the way only a soldier who has been on the front lines can be, his every step is haunted by the rattle of machine guns, the roar of artillery, and the screams of dying friends and comrades.
The homecoming he receives upon his return, though, is nothing like what he'd hoped for--a wife who couldn't wait for him in an America that has become almost unrecognizable in his absence. Shattered by her betrayal, Mark gives up on love, life, and the possibility of ever finding the peace he longs for.
Life is not quite done with Mark, however. While he throws himself into the backbreaking work of building a ranch, fate takes a hand, first in the form of Alma Cornbird, a Pima woman, then in the guise of a beautiful rodeo queen named Julie Wright. Both women are determined not to let him slip further into isolation and despair, and both leave their mark upon him. With their help, the violent afterimages of the war begin to fade, and life blooms again from the hollow shell it left behind. The only thing he lacks is the right horse on which to chase that sunset once more.
Blue Roan Colt is the heartwarming story of a man broken by war and betrayal who finds salvation through the gift of love, brought to life by legendary author Dusty Richards and his longtime writing partner, Velda Brotherton.

About the Author
VELDA BROTHERTON writes from her home perched on the side of a mountain against the Ozark National Forest. Branded as Sexy, Dark and Gritty, her work embraces the lives of gutsy women and heroes who are strong enough to deserve them. After a stint writing for a New York publisher, she has settled comfortably in with small publishers to produce novels in several genres. While known for her successful series work-the Twist of Poe romantic mysteries, as well as her signature Western Historical Romances-her publishing resume includes numerous standalone novels, including Once There Were Sad Songs, A Savage Grace, Wolf Song, Stoneheart's Woman, Remembrance, and this, her magnum opus, Beyond the Moon.

About the author

Velda Brotherton has a long career in historical writing, both fiction and nonfiction. Her love of history and the west is responsible for the publication of 30 western historical romances, novels, short stories and non-fiction books since 1994. In 2015 she signed on with a new publisher, Oghma Creative Media, with their publication of her book, Beyond the Moon. Meanwhile she works as head historical nonfiction editor as well as continuing to write for Oghma since. Several creative non-fiction books are waiting in line for publication, as well as the re-issue of earlier western fiction with her new publisher. At the age of 86 she is nowhere finished writing or working with novice writers. Those voices simply won't shut up, and so she finds them a home.
She hopes to have more of her work added to audio books soon. Meanwhile she writes a column and produces interviews for Saddlebags Dispatch, a twice yearly western magazine produced by Oghma Creative Media. Reprints of her Ozark Cookbook, as well as Lost in the Ozarks and Wandering in the Shadows of Time are planned. ,
The most fun she's had came when owner/designer of Oghma Creative Media, Casey Cowan, suggested a new brand for her writing. Sexy, Dark, and Gritty so well fits her writing style that it was quickly adopted.
This busy writer who has co-chaired a large weekly critique group since 1988, is no longer able to hold the two all-day yearly workshops she once held, but she still heads up an online writer's workshop. She isn't sure what will come next. She helped write some of the late Dusty Richard's westerns and is now writing her own western series, the Tale of a Woman Bounty Hunter. Her next book due out is the story of the Southwestern U.S. Marshals headquartered in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written western by Dustry Richards. A must read, more than once.
This western story covers such an interesting period of time. The main character reminds me of Chet Byrnes but Mark's trials to overcome PTSD and his joining up with Sam Cline opens up a whole new life for him. It tells the poverty and life situation of native Indians in Arizona at that time. A wonderful story, entertaining, full of humour and sadness. A book I will read more than once and treasure always.
