VAULT OF THE CELESTIALS
Chapter 1
––––––––
THE sudden appearance and rapid growth of the planet set off alarms that made everyone jump to attention within the control center cabin.
Scrap it!
Her small hands flying over the control panel, Zaer followed the exclamation with a string of curses in a language Nya couldn't begin to understand.
Shen's small hands flew over the control console next to Zaer's.
Where she stood between the two weapons stations, Nya braced herself from the jostling with her hands pressing up on the low ceiling. Vel and Nik grabbed the weapons consoles where they sat to steady their own jostling. If only there was a fifth seat to strap in for the crash landing.
What did you do to my ship?!
Zaer twisted around to growl at Vel, baring sharp teeth on her small snout. Tan-furred, triangle ears flattened on her head.
Planet!
Vel pointed, suddenly awake from his stupor after hardly sleeping for two days.
Zaer turned back to the controls. I know! Thanks to your bad repairs, we came out of hyperspace too late and hit the atmosphere.
Next to her, Shen said something in his language that made Zaer snap, Don't take his side!
The heads-up flared with a warning display about the ship speeding towards the planet filling their view. On the bottom, a blue dot flashed.
Comm!
Nik pointed to the flashing blue dot.
Shut up and let me fly!
Shen switched on the comms.
Metal moaned in its strain around them.
Attacking craft...
We're not attacking! Our hyperdrive is out. It was supposed to be fixed!
We fixed it,
Vel defended.
Apparently not!
Their approach to the planet appeared to be slowing, but gravity and the momentum of coming out of hyperspace made their approach too fast. Friction on the shields burned hot, setting off other warning alarms, which Zaer slapped off. The ship groaned and creaked and rattled.
Nya staggered off balance and resigned to sitting at the back, despite the bouncing.
Krax!
Zaer's small hands flew over her console. Shen!
He let out a string of tart words in reply. His normal blue-white head turned pink, and the frill around his bald head waved quickly.
We need maximum reverse!
Shen gave a short reply.
I don't care if we burn them out! I need full power, or we'll burn up!
Um... Zaer.
Nik's knuckles were white on the console before him.
The heating had stopped, but they were still falling too quickly. Nya could only wish for her own shuttle, which had been confiscated by Paxons on Tyol. They wouldn't be in this mess if Vel hadn't used his credit chip to pay the docking fees.
She was going to die before ever starting her real mission.
Nik jumped from his seat and leaned on Zaer's high-backed seat to point out the view. Head for the ocean... there, if you can.
I don't have much control!
Do what you can.
We're coming in too fast.
Just try.
Nik barely tempered his frustration.
Zaer was right, but his plan was sound. The ocean wasn't far from their projected impact. If she could manage even a small adjustment, they might slam into the water, which was only marginally better than crashing into the ground as a giant fireball.
Nik returned to his seat and gave Nya a questioning look.
If he was thinking what she thought he was thinking, she agreed. Nya curled up at the back of the cabin.
Shen said something that sounded panicked.
I see it! We're losing reverse thrusters.
Security patrols incoming,
Nik said.
Nya peered out from her arms curled around her head but could only make out a ring of red dots around a green shape in one section of the display. At the view outside of a vast blue blur of sky speeding by, Nya rolled up, her head tucked into her knees and her arms tight around it in preparation.
No good,
Zaer said. "Pull up. Pull up. Pull up... Come on, D'Nee... Pull up..." Her straining voice came several seconds before a sudden decrease in speed caught them.
Nya was thrown into the lower panels by Vel's legs.
The groan of straining metal came with a giant splash as they coasted to a stop.
After a moment of calm, the scuffling of feet and clicking of belts prompted Nya to open her eyes. But she couldn't untangle her body.
Nya.
Vel reached for her. She tried to move her arms to reach for him but scraped them where she was wedged in by the seat's base bolted to the floor.
A loud metallic groan came from the ship.
Not good,
Nik said.
We're taking on water.
After a moment, Zaer snapped, Everyone out!
With Vel's tugging, Nya managed to escape the tight space, although with a few scrapes and bruises that would heal quickly. At least she had survived the splashdown.
She straightened and looked out at the water covering the nose of the ship with dismay, while Nik and Zaer fought with the cabin door. The bright sun shone through the glass.
It's locked.
Nik grunted.
No.
Zaer popped the panel of the controls for the door. It can't be.
Shen said something and pointed to the splashing water outside.
No. Not the water—ships. They hovered in the sky around them.
Ssh!
Zaer paused and put her ear to the door
They all quieted for several seconds.
The faint slosh of water against the hull reached Nya's ears. I only hear water.
Exactly.
Zaer slammed the panel cover to the ground. The hold is flooding. This cabin is pressurized. We open that door and we'll drown. Hitting the water at that speed stressed the hull too much.
But they were alive.
No one offered any alternatives. Nya looked out over the dead consoles to the ships hovering over them and the water splashing over the nose of the ship. They would sink soon; it was a miracle they hadn't already. If they didn't get out, they'd be trapped.
That's it.
Nya blinked at Vel. What?
We blast our way out and swim to safety.
Shen nodded vigorously.
Zaer's eyes narrowed. Easy for you to say. Water is your element.
Don't tell me you can't swim.
She shook her head in reply to Vel's question. I'm a smuggler, not a deep-sea diver. I never had to swim.
I can fly you to land,
Nya offered. But we have to hurry. If I get my wings wet, they'll be too heavy to fly myself.
We better hurry,
Nik said.
Right. Get back.
They did as she commanded and pressed to the back of the cabin behind her as she removed the gloves. The resonance warmed through her before she had them off.
The only problem was the ring of ships outside.
Worry about getting out. They have shields.
Vel grimaced and added, And they already know your intent.
Score one for telepaths. Get ready. We'll take on water faster once that glass is gone.
She put her hands before her and focused on the power level she would need to burn through glass rated for hyperspace.
This wasn't going to be easy.
I need your strength, she begged the entities of her crystal shard.
It poured through her in response, heating her into a sweat. She released the energy from the marks on her hands in a focused blast, but it had to last long enough to burn through the canopy. Nya let the energy pour through.
When she thought it should be enough, and the strain weakened her, she stopped and shivered from the cold left by the release of the energy.
Or was it? The scent of ocean water blew a chill breeze through a gaping hole smoking around the edges. Those edges sizzled where the water splashed into the cabin, cooling away the orange glow.
Everyone out!
The command came from Nik behind her.
A wave of dizziness made Nya hesitate while Shen scrambled out and into the water.
Let's go.
Nik's steadying hands aided her onto the seats and console and up to the opening. With Nik's and Vel's coordinated assistance, Nya climbed out onto the hull.
Behind her, Zaer scrambled around the seats and met them at the hole, where Vel lifted the little Jiksian towards her.
I—I don't...
Zaer ducked away from a splash of water.
Shen's out there. He'll keep you afloat,
Vel said.
In response, the Oolan waved from the water.
With her shrieking in fright, Vel nearly threw her out.
Nya smiled and steadied her—the smuggler could face the worst fringe of the galaxy and keep her humor, but she couldn't tolerate a little water. Her amusement was only momentary as Zaer grabbed her thigh with those tiny claws.
I've seen you fly, girl,
the smuggler said with pleading eyes turned up to her and ears drooping. Get me out of here!
Nya agreed. Water all around them and four ships in the blue sky. The ship beneath them was still afloat for the time being, but that wouldn't last much longer.
Vel and Nik were making their way out with water splashing in their faces, but there wasn't much room outside. Soon, the ship would be submerged.
The resonance of the Starfire in her cells came easily again, this time focused on her back. The blast had taken a lot out of her, and the transformation was painful; but she had to do this. The growth of muscle, bones, sinew, and feathers tore through her, but Nya finished the transformation of energy and matter to what she was.
Silvery-white wings spread out, helping her keep her balance as Vel and Nik emerged. The breeze on her feathers teased her. At last, she would fly again in a real atmosphere.
Take Zaer.
Nik pointed up at the ships. We'll be all right.
On cue, Zaer scrambled up quickly from the advancing water.
Watch the claws!
The pricks along Nya's arms and neck ended when Zaer clung around her neck.
Just fly!
Not so tight.
Zaer relaxed her death grip, a little.
The water soaked her feet. Nya flapped hard, careful not to dip her wings into the ocean waters, and rose with Zaer clinging to her. Nya held onto the small body in the hopes that the tan-furred Jiksian would feel more secure and relax her grip, but it didn't wane.
Easy, Zaer. Let me fly. You'll be all right.
I hate other people flying.
Nya almost laughed, stopped only by the squeezing of her throat as if to strangle her. "I've only been doing this
