Chapter one
This is a love story that may or may not have a happy ending, but it is one that will endure for a lifetime.
Elizabeth and John had known each other for many years, they met in early childhood, and attended the same school in the East End of London. As they spent more and more time together an inseparable bond formed between the two of them, one that would last a lifetime.
Their friendship grew and soon evolved into a deep love, so it was only natural to all of those around them that they would end up as a couple. Both families joyfully watched on as that love blossomed between them. However, the war swept in, altering not only their lives but reshaping the world entirely.
‘Lizzie’, as she was affectionately known by John and both families, lost her parents and sister during a bombing raid early in the war. In her despair she leant on John greatly. His comfort was the only thing that kept her going for a long while. Just as she was getting back on an even keel, John lost his mother, and it was her turn to support him. For a while, apart from Lizzie, John’s only family had been his mother, his father had died a few years before the start of the war.
The young couple consoled each other, offering support when the other one needed it. They tried their best to carry on with life as normally as they could, but it was hard to do while living through a war. They had each become homeless due to the bombings, but fortunately Lizzie managed to find them a small, ground floor flat that they could share. An unmarried couple living together was unheard of at the time, so they decided not to tell anyone that they were not legally married. One day on his way home from work John purchased a simple gold ring for Lizzie to wear so that they would not be asked any questions that could be the cause of a scandal.
When the war is over, we will be married, but for now I hope this will do as a promise to you Lizzie,
he told her as he put the ring on her finger.
Lizzie loved it, and the joy on her face was clear for John to see. She understood why they wouldn’t marry yet, the war meant that everything was turned upside down; she could wait a little longer.
The young couple settled into life
