    Hawk's Last First Kiss - L.A. Remenicky

    Chapter One

Hawk stared at the spreadsheet, the numbers blurring. Looking up, he realized it was after seven and he should have gone home two hours ago. Geez, he needed to get a life outside of work. It was the middle of tax season and he was up to his eyeballs in tax returns for his clients.

His stomach chose that moment to remind him he hadn’t eaten since breakfast. He ran his hands over his beard to smooth it. That always seemed to calm his mind. Shutting down his laptop, he reached for his phone and keys. His phone rang. He checked the screen and swiped to answer the call.

    Hey, Sadie.

    Are you still at work?

He heard Sadie’s dog, Rosco barking in the background.

    Yeah, why?

’Cause I’m standing in your kitchen with a pizza from Rosa’s and you aren’t here.

Shit, Sadie, I’m sorry. I totally spaced it. I’m walking out the door right now. He shoved his laptop into its bag and shut off the lights. I’ll be there in five minutes.

She huffed into the phone and hung up. Shit, it would take some serious sucking up to get her to forgive him for this. Their Rosa’s nights were sacred. No matter what was going on, every Wednesday was Rosa’s pizza and a movie at seven. Luckily his apartment was only a couple of miles down the road so he’d be home in no time.

After racing home, he got out of his car and stretched. God, he’d been spending too many hours hunched over his keyboard. He made a promise to himself to hire some more accountants, the workload was becoming too much for just him. When he first started out, there’d been a lot of lean months until he’d built up his client base. Sadie had been there through it all, helping him with administrative tasks after working all day as a newbie real estate agent.

Throwing his keys onto the counter, the aroma of tomato sauce and garlic made him smile. His stomach rumbled and he grabbed a plate and piled it high with pizza before opening the fridge to find Sadie had brought his favorite beer.

Plopping onto the couch next to her, he set the beer on the table and took a huge bite of pizza.

    About time you got here.

He finished chewing and swallowed. I know. I’m sorry. I’ll make it up to you.

    You better.

He already owed her so much, he didn’t know how he could make it up to her. Maybe that Gucci purse she’d been eyeing…

He took swig of beer and looked at the screen, Top Gun again?

You weren’t here to help me pick so you get to watch what I want.

Fair enough. After biting into the pizza he watched her as he chewed, wondering what she’d been doing this week. That was bad, it used to be he always
