About Teacakes
Teacakes or tea cakes mean different things. Generally, it is a loaf cake or cookies. The one thing they have in common is that they go well with tea.
In England, a teacake is a light yeast-based sweet bun containing dried fruit (usually currants, sultanas, or citrus peel). It’s typically served toasted and buttered. In some areas of England, teacake does not contain fruit.
The Southeastern United States teacake is a traditional dense, large cookie made with sugar, butter, eggs, flour, and milk. In the rest of the United States, a teacake is a single layer cake or loaf cake.
Tekaka is the Swedish word for teacake, and it refers to a sweetened wheat soda bread and served warm with butter, jam, and often cheese.
In Australia and India, a teacake is often a heavy sponge cake.
Russian tea cakes are round, light cookies rolled in powdered sugar. There connection to Russian is unknown, but they are thought to have an Eastern European origin and have been served next to Russian samovars (a special tea pot). Similar cookies are Mexican wedding cakes, Italian wedding cookies, butterballs, and snowball cookies.
