Last Chance Fire and Rescue
Working together might cost them everything.
Veterinary tech Pepper Miller knows she broke the heart of the man she loves…and there’s no going back, especially when the secret that tore them apart is still hidden. Now, she’s focused on watching her niece, Victory, until her mother’s return. But when her sister goes missing, she’ll have to turn to the one man she can’t face in order to find—and save—her family.
Allen Frees’ life blew up the night that Pepper left him. Not just because she broke his heart, but because a raid went south—and he ended up in a wheelchair. Now, as the liaison between the Fire Department and City Hall, he’s determined to help the leaderless FD’s truck crew and rescue squad work together, even if he can’t fix his broken heart.
When Victory is nearly kidnapped at a community event, Allen helps Pepper protect her niece. But there’s a new drug in town, and Pepper’s sister is embroiled in a dangerous bargain. When her secret is discovered, and danger closes in, what will it cost her to save the people they love? And can Allen put aside the past to fight for a new future?
Last Chance County returns in this blazing new series from Sunrise Publishing.

Lisa Phillips is an ex-pat Brit who crossed the pond to attend Bible College. She and her husband have two kids (because man-to-man defense is easier than zone defense) and two bunny rabbits (for the same reason). Lisa got her start writing while waiting for her employment authorization card to come through, and studied the craft with the Christian Writers Guild. She can most often be found with a cup of proper tea and her nose in a book. Find out more at www.authorlisaphillips.com

THIS is the first of the series. Good story, and I enjoyed the firefighting bits of it, the narration just wasn't my favorite. I think it's just tough for a man to narrate women's and girl voices, and some of these came out kind of whiny, making it more difficult to love a couple of the main characters. Male characters seemed a little forced, too, and character development could have gone a little deeper, but maybe that will grow along with the series. All that said, I enjoyed the tale enough to keep on until the end, and will go on to book two of the series. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5
