Beth's Behavior (School of Enlightenment Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

An outrageous free spirit meets her match in an introvert with a secret leather business

Raised as a free spirit, Beth Jenkins refuses to submit to the Ton’s rigid rules. She has fun where she wants, with whomever she wishes. By day, she excels at matching people’s needs with those who can provide them. That talent and her cousin, Lady Althea Egerton, are the only barriers standing between her and complete ostracization.

When her cousin requires an investor for her business, Beth gains them an entrée to a house party hosted by a wealthy earl, where she encounters Robert Orford. The intimate leather apparel and toys of pleasure he creates entice Beth as much as the man himself, and she is determined to pursue him.

As the stocky second son of an earl, Robert was bullied as a child and hates being in the public eye. Beth’s behavior is far too outrageous for his tastes. If only she didn’t have the curvy figure he most admires, perfect for testing his leather pieces.
But Beth refuses to be tamed, so if she can’t convince him to care less about society’s disapproval, they could be forced to walk away from the perfect partnership for leather and love.

Maggie Sims began her love affair with romance before her teen years, drawn to the Regency by her mum’s British influence. In her twenties, she did her best to live the Carrie Bradshaw life in New York City, albeit with less expensive shoes and more books.

Despite reading hundreds of romance novels in her life, she was still blown away when she met the love of her life, an ex-Marine cinnamon roll with creative woodworking and culinary skills.

Having retired from corporate life, they live in Central Texas and are parents to a varying number of dogs and cats. When not writing, Maggie is a wine enthusiast, a travel junkie, and a romance reading fiend. She also sporadically crochets for KnotsofLove.org and does just enough exercise for that second glass of wine at night.

BOOKWORM REVIEW: Beth's Behavior by Maggie Sims

BOOKWORM REVIEW: Beth's Behavior by Maggie Sims
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5SPICE: 🔥🔥🔥🔥It is always the quiet ones. ALWAYS.Beth Jenkins defines extroverted. The free-spirited socialite plays by her own rules, even if it goes against the Ton's standards. She does not shy away from attention, even at the risqué, after-hours parties she frequents. Robert "Ford" Orford is quite the opposite. The quiet earl avoids the spotlight at all costs and would prefer to keep to his hobby of creating leather-made items for pleasure. When his creations catch Beth's attention, she is determined to entice the earl to use his handiwork on her. As much as Ford wants to, getting that much attention is just not his idea of a fun time.A reverse rake and wallflower story? I was all about it. I love the dynamic between Beth and Ford. Maggie Sims delivered us with a lovable and outgoing FMC, and I really enjoyed the creativity in flipping the role of the rake with hidden insecurities. Ford is equally charismatic with his shy demeanor, but what did I say in the beginning? You have got to watch out for the quiet ones because they always bring the heat into the bedroom. Ford is no exception. This one is probably my favorite of the series. I just loved the creativity, and I felt like Sims certainly turned it up on the heat. That theater scene? Yeah, I was fanning myself. This can be read as a standalone, but if you are into super-spicy historical romance, you will not regret reading this series.

Beth’s Behavior is so much fun and so original. I loved Beth’s carefree nature and passion for everything. How refreshing to have a hero who isn't overflowing with confidence. Together, Robert and Beth are perfect. This book is so s3xy and naughty. I highly recommend to Regency Romance readers who love a heaping dose of five flame spice in their books.

This book centers around the heroine, Beth Jenkins, and the hero Robert Orford. Beth is a young woman who had a unique upbringing. She was sent to the "School of Enlightenment" when she was a young woman, where she learned how to be a free spirt, including sexually. She is no wilting wallflower and takes lovers of both persuasions. She is very social, confident and self aware.
Robert is the opposite. While in school he was bullied, and the aftereffects have molded his personality. He is very reserved, never wants to stand out in a crowd and has social anxiety. Though he is aloof, he hides a secret... he designs leather restraints and apparatuses.
Beth is intrigued and seeks Robert out. - The plot centers around the dynamics of their relationship. Robert who never feels comfortable in his own body and Beth who craves a deep love and not just a one-night stand.
I was pretty impressed with this plot and the depth of the characters. It's quite rare for a "spicy book" to be this developed. Many authors just write page after page of sex scenes and the plot /characters are never well developed. Maggie Sims did a wonderful job writing a spicy book that also had a meaningful plot and good characters. The "scenes" added to the story- they weren't the story.
If you enjoy less tame books-I suggest you pick this one up!.

Miss Beth Jenkins is a free spirit raised by her now deceased parents to be who she wants to be regardless of society. Totally bis-sexual and classless she cavorts with nobles and maids to footmen as frequently as possible. Living with her older cousin, Lady Althea Egerton the widowed owner of an apothecary who wants to open a second store in Bath she persuades Althea to go with her to a two week sex party at Greenborough Park owned by the handsome rake Evan Gardner, the Earl of Cheltenham. I wish this book had centered upon his affair with the elegant Althea but instead it gave us his friend, Robert Orford whom he had befriended at Oxford and made wealthy through investments. Beth becomes enamoured of Robert as he is indeed a skilled lover and a maker and designer of BDSM leather goods but it becomes boring and repetitive. I wanted to skip out but managed to sludge on through. Just didn't click with Beth and Robert. So unromantic with frequent mechanical uncomfortable sex. Received this arc and voluntarily reviewed.

    Should I read in order?
It’s not totally necessary, but the prior characters do make appearances. This book happens concurrently with the prior book (Althea’s Awakening) and it’s really fun seeing the events happening in both books (especially the theater scene!)

    Basic plot:
Beth is intrigued by Robert’s shy demeanor and very curious about his hobby in leather...

Give this a try if you want:
    - Regency (didn’t see a year listed but I have the prior book, Althea’s Awakening, which happens the same time as this novel at 1817)
    - bisexual (pansexual?) heroine
    - reversed rake and the wallflower
    - shy/self conscious hero
    - bubbly/extroverted heroine
    - artist/crafting hero – he draws designs for and makes leather bondage apparel
    - light touch of unrequited longing – the hero saw the heroine a year ago and has been thinking of her since
    - bearded hero
    - overall it’s a lower angst read
    - naughty house party (strip whist, blindman’s bluff)
    - heroine pursues
    - full figured heroine – she has a round figure with a full middle
    - higher steam – 6 full scenes with toys and kink

    My thoughts:
I was so excited to read Beth’s story! She’s been a bubbly and fun personality through this series and I couldn’t wait to see her romance match.

This was a really fun take on the rake and wallflower pairing. Beth is extroverted, social, and up for anything – especially naughty games at house parties. She’s never been one to shy away from the limelight. Robert is quite the opposite. Shy, withdrawn he definitely doesn’t want the spotlight on him. He has no problem proving his prowess behind closed doors, however.

The thing I loved about this one was the time and detail spent on the intimate scenes. Robert works with leather to make all sorts of toys, apparel, and apparatuses that were a delight to explore in this story. Sims added such great detail to be able to picture the different apparel used.

I ended up loving both characters. Beth is one of those heroines that I just adore and want to be friends with. She seems like she’s very easy to interact with and it calls to my introverted heart. Robert, I loved having a shy hero. He’s even self conscious about his body, which I don’t think I’ve ever had a hero like that. This was a rewarding read watching them both have to open up to their insecurities and become vulnerable with each other.

I really liked this book. Haven't read too many books from this era where the woman ignores societies mandates of how to act. She goes out of her way to have sexual fun with partners of both sex because she was raised to see sex as fun as long as the people involved are happy. When she meets Robert, who makes sexual items out of leather, she finds she doesn't want anyone else. Robert is a private soul and has a hard time being as open as Beth in a sexual nature, although behind closed doors he seems to be everything she could ever want. It takes some work to compromise their ideals. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy.

Beth is such a free spirit who enjoys life and partners of same mind. Robert on the other hand is very private with his life and his business which is for intimate play. Robert can’t believe his luck that Beth wants to be with him but he is not sure about their two different personalities. Their chemistry is off the charts and definitely love how Robert shows Beth the art of patience while she tries to convince him that he will not be judged harshly by his peers. Loved their story.
