The Secret Gift (The Queen's Rise Series) Paperback – December 1, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Jezebel's shapeshifting gift breaks every rule in Jinn.
At seventeen, she’s forced to keep it secret or risk having her ability severed, stolen from her completely. Despite the danger, a part of her is desperate to embrace her power.
When Jezebel's friends discover a portal to the human world, she follows them into the strange place, unable to resist the temptation to explore her gift where no one will see.
Except someone does. Someone Jezebel thought she could trust.
His betrayal comes in whispers at first. But all too quickly, those whispers become demands. And he’ll stop at nothing—not even blackmail—to use Jezebel’s power for himself.
One dark decision leads to another, until Jezebel stands to lose something she can’t live without—either her freedom, or her innocence.
THE SECRET GIFT is the first book in THE QUEEN'S RISE series, inspired by your favorite fairy tale villains in Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast. It’s a spin-off of The Stolen Kingdom series, but can also be read on its own. Over a century before Queen Jezebel crosses paths with Arie, Rena, and Nesrin, she’s just an innocent Jinni girl… who was betrayed.
If you love fairytale retellings like The Lunar Chronicles and supernatural abilities like the Graceling series, then you’ll love the Queen’s Rise series!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024I've had Bethany Atazadeh's books on my TBR for what feels like forever... I'm a mood reader and therefore my reading lists never go to plan. I was expecting this to be good, but it was FANTASTIC. The way you feel literally every choice that Jezebel makes is so poignant and raw. This story had me sitting on the edge of my seat while also making me wonder if I would have fallen down the same path that she did.
I almost never read books about corruption arcs, but this one was definitely worth it. The choices and consequences are all really well done and the character growth feels so real and familiar.
Jezebel's story is certainly one that is not only a great fantasy read, but also a great warning. We are all sinful creatures who act in self-preservation. Small lies eventually stack up, and we are all capable of justifying our actions until we believe that we are in the right.
It's impossible to put down!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2023A short but smooth story. The pace is consistent and pulled me along. The main characters spiral in to trouble felt true to character and the writing was smoth. I am looking for book two already.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2023I love Bethany's content on YouTube. Her personality is genuine and she offers incredibly helpful advice. She's also so transparent about her writing journey...all of which has made her a pleasure to tune into. I was stoked to read this book, so I wanted to lead with all of that as a preface because I'm rating lower than I thought I would when I made my purchase. I'll start with the good though. What I loved about this book was the plot. I thought it was so well done, so cohesive, so easy to follow, and allowed for a villain origin story that not only makes sense for why the villain is a villain, but has you rooting for the villain!
However, I thought the chemistry between the characters was lacking. I just didn't feel it between Jezebel and Asher, I didn't even feel it between her and her friends. None of them really seemed to like her all that much, which I think was meant to be the point to an extent...she never really felt like she fit in with them, but if that's the case it makes it harder for me to believe that she's genuinely sad when everything goes south. I thought the chemistry between her and Shem was better, but still flat overall. With both Asher and Shem I found myself wondering: but why does she like him? What are the qualities that they possess, and moments shared between them (even if they only existed in the backstory that we, readers, don't get to see) that has made her attracted to them and hoping for more than friendship with them?
Sometimes I felt like the wording of sentences could've helped strengthen the dynamic between Jezebel and these two especially, but again, I don't think the backstory was fully there so in a lot of ways these relationships felt 2-dimensional. Which was a bummer because it's the relationships and the disintegration of certain relationships that drive Jezebel's motives, but if there's no chemistry it's kind of hard to care about the unfortunate things that happen to her, and even the good things that happen. Like the betrayal, but even the triumph, don't land as much of a punch without these relationships being better flushed out, if that makes sense.
Still, I will say that this book was fast-paced and easy to digest which made for a decent read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2024The story was sad in a way but the plot twists and turns were great. It was shocking how she used her gifts but was the only way out of the situation.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024I went into this book not knowing anything about the author or even the book’s premise. What I found was a fast-paced, intriguing story about a poor Jinni (genie) trying to make the best of a miserable life. The twists start coming fast about halfway in, and her choices are believable for her character and kept making me wonder where she would end up. I’m very interested in her story now and can’t wait to get the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2025This compelling young adult fantasy follows a teenage girl who, after enduring neglect and discovering her powers as a Jin, navigates betrayal and morally complex choices in a nuanced villain origin story. A surprising and emotionally resonant read for fans of the genre.
I discovered this book through the author's YouTube channel, where she offers valuable self-publishing advice. Though young adult novels aren't typically my jam, I decided to support her work by purchasing this book.
What a pleasant surprise! The story quickly captured my attention and held it until the final page. The protagonist's journey is particularly compelling - she begins as an ordinary teenager dealing with neglect and abuse at home while navigating the usual teenage challenges of romantic crushes and tenuous self-esteem, only to discover her powerful abilities as a Jin. The narrative thoughtfully explores how she comes to understand these new powers, faces betrayal, and ultimately makes morally questionable choices out of self-preservation.
The character development is both believable and relatable, establishing a strong foundation for what appears to be a complex villain origin story. And Atazadeh crafts this transformation with nuance and emotional authenticity. 4 stars - I highly recommend if you like reading fantasy and young adult.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2023Though maybe that is based off my own mood. This book is also out of my usual genre. I likes the book, though. And I will continue to the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024You think you have a character figured out but then her motivations change. Is she truly to blame for what happens? It was enthralling watching as she changed her future. Excellent work Bethany!

3.0 out of 5 stars A unique villain origin story
I wasn't as drawn in as I was with The Stolen Kingdom series. I did like the elements of Snow White especially the take on the mirror and the cover is stunning. I would have liked more descriptions to help visualise the story.
"You think you know a story, but you only know how it ends. To get to the heart of the story, you have to go back to the beginning" -The Tudors
I look forward to seeing how Jezebel's character develops and how the story comes together in the next two books as this was really only just the beginning setting up the characters. I did feel empathy for her and feeling like she had not much choice in her situation, trying to protect herself from those closest to her who kept betraying her. The author got the characterisation of a narcissist character like Asher right.
Overall an interesting take on a villain origin story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A villain origin story
The Secret Gift is the first book I've read by Bethany Atazadeh, and I was pleasantly surprised. I was impressed with the writing and how the author presented the characters and the world.
In The Secret Gift, we're introduced to a Jinn called Jezebel (such a great choice of a name!) and her four friends as they discover a portal to the human world. The story is centred on Jezebel, who plays the villain in the series. It's a snapshot of her growing into the villain's role. This growth is introduced through a series of seemingly innocent actions that lead to sinister results. Jezebel's choices felt very human, so unsurprisingly, I found it easy to justify them even as they quickly spiralled out of control. By the end of the story, I found myself wondering who was the greater villain: Jezebel or her friends.
I found the world of Jinn, with its floating islands fascinating. Learning about Jezebel's gift in the light of the "Three Unbreakable Laws: Never use a Gift to deceive, never use a Gift to steal, and never use a Gift to harm another." provided a clear trajectory as Jezebel checks herself against each law, allowing us a glimpse into the workings of her mind.
If you're curious about what makes a villain, give The Secret Gift a read. Perhaps like me, you will be surprised to find a shard of light at the core of Jezebel's black heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well-written start to a villain origin story
I am a HUGE sucker for a villain with a tragic backstory that is forced into their role but ultimately embraces it! I have not read the series that this is a prequel to but found that wasn't necessary and the story was easy to follow and understand. Bethany's writing has evolved and developed so wonderfully from her first published book, Evalene's Number (which I own a physical copy of!) and I adore her prose here. Very keen to continue reading this series. It is a quick read, so if you're looking for a quick and fun fantasy villain fix, this is a great book to jump into.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could not finish
I just couldn't get on with the writing style. The blurb was interesting but the writing was way to stilted to connect to the character. Whether first person or third I like to be able to see and experience the story and actions from the character, not as some overview by the author. It's not to say the story was bad or that it didn't live up to the blurb, but I just could not connect with the author's distance from the main character. My guess is that the author is too much of a plotter, and plotted out the story and made the character fit. Don't do this. If the author were to have a lose outline and let the character lead the story it would come out organically and with the closeness most readers enjoy. So, I was unable to get past the second chapter.
I wish the author all the best on her writing journey. But I won't be purchasing any more of her books.
