      L ook, it's just not going to happen. Ashton Crowe stares at me like I'm the dumbest person he's ever met in his life. He crosses his arms over his perfectly pressed suit and just stares at me.

      Does he really think that's going to scare me?

      My dad has been running Rose Valley Community College since I was a kid, which means that people on campus are scared of me – not the other way around. I certainly would never be scared of some random professor who should be teaching at a four-year university – not slumming it at the local community college.

      Not. Going. To. Happen. Once again, he repeats his declaration. This time, his words come out short and clipped.

      I’m wildly irritated by this entire encounter.

      Why the fuck not? I snap, hissing the words out. If he's surprised by my foul language, he has the decency not to react. He's professional in a cold, calculating sort of way which makes me think that he's more dangerous than he's letting on. I know perfectly well that if I ever turn my back, he won’t think twice about stabbing me in it.

      So, I'd better not turn my back.

      Ashton is the kind of man most young business majors aspire to be. He’s sharp as hell, dresses like a damn model, and pays attention to everything around him. I don’t think there’s a single thing that happens on campus that he’s not aware of.

      It’s actually a little unnerving.

      And now he’s telling me no.

      It’s not something I expected to hear from his lips, but maybe I shouldn’t be surprised.

      You know perfectly well that the department budget is carefully planned, sometimes years in advance, he says. He speaks slowly like I can't possibly understand what he's saying. Why is he treating me like I'm stupid? For a girl like me - no, for a woman like me - that's probably the most infuriating thing about this entire situation.

      I’m used to being talked down to by a lot of people.

      I’m also used to having to stand up for myself if I want even a chance of being heard.

      And I also know that you have wiggle room, I point out. We have plenty of room to bring on at least two more teaching assistants. This would provide more jobs for our students, which means they'll have more time to study, and they won't have to spend as much time traveling.

      I hate the idea that our college students are struggling so much because of financial problems. Tuition is up across the country and Rose Valley Community College is no exception. The difference is that at Rose Valley, students have to deal with an asshole English professor like Ashton Crowe.

      He's only been here six months. It's nearly the end of the winter semester and he came in the middle of summer. I still don't know what a guy like Ashton saw in a place like Rose Valley. There's nothing here. We're a small community college located at the edge of a major metropolis, which means that all of the rich kids go to universities in the center of the city and all of the poor kids from rural areas flock here.

      The last thing they need is Ashton putting up more roadblocks.

      The last thing they need is someone trying to sabotage their success.

      Look, I say when it's clear Ashton isn't going to budge. Bringing on teaching assistants doesn't mean you don't have to teach as much. It just means you'll be able to delegate your tasks.

      Why would I need to delegate my tasks? Are you insinuating that I can't handle my own workload? Forgive me, Miss Weston, but just because your father is both a donor and the college president doesn't mean that you get to boss around the faculty.

      I frown. I'm not trying to boss around the faculty. I'm trying to help the students. And my job is made about a thousand times harder because Ashton is so fucking hot. He's tall and muscular. He's got this face that just makes me want to slap him or kiss him. Most of the time, I can't tell which one would be better.

      I think the students can help themselves, he tells me firmly. If you don't mind, I have a class. He turns and starts to leave the office - his office - that we're both standing in. I grab his arm as he turns to step out of the door. For some reason, this catches him off-guard because he reacts quickly. Before I realize what's happening, his hand is on
