      When he learned from Dante that the blond he’d been checking out in the Girls’ Unit had been sent to the Infirmary, John-John strolled over to the cage to talk to Scott.

      Man, I gots to go to the Infirmary. My stomach, man, it really hurts.

      Scott finished jotting down something on the form he’d been filling out and looked through the mesh. John, how many years you been coming in here? Three? Four, maybe?

      John shuffled, pouting. When Scott got that mild tone in his voice, it usually meant nobody was gettin’ nothin’. Shit man, I don’t know. Maybe three.

      And the Division of Youth Services values you as a loyal and faithful customer. With his checked flannel shirt, waffle stompers, and thick glasses Scott sure looked like a Bubba. But he had this weird way of talking sometimes that made you spend more time trying to figure out what he was saying than what you were. Unlike the airlines, however, we don’t give frequent flier miles. So stop trying to move me and get back to your homies.

      Man, you’re trippin’. I ain’t trying to move you. My stomach—

      Damn. John went back over to the bench at the side of the day room his buddies had staked out.

      How’d it go? asked Dante.

      Man, he served me.

      Asshole. I hate all these white staff.

      Aw, Scott’s no racist. He knew I was tryin’ to move him, is all. I ain’t even gonna worry about it.

      But he did worry about it.

      Cheryl. That was her name. Blond and slender, with this kind of cockeyed twist to her lips like everything you or anyone else did wasn’t no more than a joke to her, a joke you were too dumb to get.
