From the Back Cover
Ingrid Larsen arrives in Michigan in 1871 with little more than the clothes on her back and a determination to find her brother, who has disappeared into the dangerous lumber camps. Destitute and barely hanging on to hope, the young Swedish immigrant crosses paths with Joshua Hunter, a newly widowed farmer with eyes the color of the ocean she had crossed and five rambunctious children to raise on his own.
Marriage would solve both of their problems, and Ingrid finds herself proposing in broken English to a man she barely knows. Many difficulties lie ahead--but the hardest battle of all will be winning the heart of her new husband.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2025The author is an incredibly gifted writer. The story of a widowed former military officer with five children and a Swedish woman who volunteers to marry him is engrossing. The subplots captivate the reader. A reader cannot put the book down until the HEA.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2018You will fall in love with Ingrid. She's funny and got grit. You will love the entire book! Amazing, "full of personality", believable characters. All the characters are engaging, adding to the whole story rather some being used as "story props". Easy reading. Historically accurate but not overwhelming. This is the second book by Ms. Miller I've read. I've already read this book twice from the library and now I decided to just purchase to just have it and read it again. The second and third time around was just as good as the first read. That entertaining for me. There is a degree of Christian value, but it's not overwhelming. It's not more than Mr. Trump calling himself a christian. The biblical principle of "do everything with love...as serving Christ, himself" is what gave Ingrid her strength and insightful understanding. That's about it. Not preachy at all. I wanted to knock some sense into the Hero throughout the book, but it added to "what's he gonna do next" factor, having me turn pages and read faster. Read it. Read it and judge for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2020I enjoyed the story and the factual information that the author included about farm life, logging, and fires of Michigan in the late 1800s. This is the third book in this series, and I have enjoyed the books except for the way the author seems to paint the Civil War South in such a selfish , evil way. There were hundreds of southern families in the south who never owned slaves. Many were poor and lived in small cabins. The Civil War was not just about slavery. It was about State`s rights. After the war many northerners treated the south horribly, but that is seldom mentioned. I have lived in numerous states, both northern and southern, so I am not siding with one side over the other. I would just like to have seen a better balance in these books. This author paints the Civil War South shamefully at times. There were bad people on both sides. I am thankful no one is a slave in America now, but there were even white slaves in America before the Civil War.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2014This is another successful book in this series by Serena B. Miller. I so enjoyed the knowledge of all the facts that were put into this interesting story. This is a story that by one kindness shown by josh to Ingrid, she showed a kindness to save Josh's family. They also had to endure so many trials, many of which were historically factual for that area and time. It's a fascinating story of how "love bears all". It wasn't an easy life their family had to endure, from mental illness to death, to ridicule, and many others, but josh and Ingrid overcome. Some might think this storyline is unrealistic, but from my own family history- I think it is more realistic then one might ponder at the first look. This is not a regular marriage of convenience. It was also fun to hear about some of the people from the other books in this series. I hope you enjoy reading about this area of Michigan and the people it's an excellent reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2020This book is phenomenal. I can't even begin to describe how detailed this book is without dragging on or being boring. It is seriously my favorite book in a long time.
Not only was it incredibly well written, but it is inspiring as well. The work ethic of the main character has given me a new vim and vigor I haven't felt in some time, which is something I've never experienced from a book before.
I recommend this book, whole-heartedly to anyone and everyone considering it. I borrowed my copy from a local library, but I plan to buy it, it's just that good. It's worth revisiting over and over again.
Thank you Serena Miller for writing such a fantastic story and sharing how it was based upon your own grandmother.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful heart warming story.
A wonderful rewarding read. Yes, life was hard in those times in the 1800's yet they were also rewarding. This story is shaped on pioneer lives, with love, courage, hardship and relentless drive for a better life. Serena Miller has a gift for talking the reader right into the action. She also helps develope a historical knowledge of the period, for which, I am grateful. The strong folk of yesteryear have shaped us to where we are today. Adding to this, is a beautiful love story developed from friendship and common sense. Yes! a rewarding read in many ways and one I had to keep running to, to find out what was happening next. .
