Sins of the Father: A 1920s Mystery (Lucas Rathbone Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

With the woman he loves missing, fate unknown, Lucas Rathbone is desperate for information.
Only two people can help - but neither can be trusted.

One is the ghost of a young politician, who claims to know the girl’s whereabouts. Unfortunately, he'll only share what he knows if the reluctant psychic pauses his frantic search to solve a decades-old cold case.

However, the dead man won't get any more dead if Lucas doesn't immediately solve the puzzle, whereas Clara…

Well. It really doesn't bear thinking about.

Which means Lucas must rely on Tommy Kilbourne, a man with no known morals, a taste for walking in life's shadows, and an all-consuming, rarely disguised infatuation with the missing girl.

But Tommy has his own agenda, one born of hate and rage and revenge, and now…

And now, Lucas and Clara are tangled up in it.

With the clock ticking down to murder, Lucas can save a life, or see it ended.

But is it right to save the life of a man who deserves death?

Saffron Amatti is the author of the Lucas Rathbone Mysteries, a series of historical cozy mysteries with a ghostly twist set in 1920s England. She lives in a rather pretty village in Derbyshire, UK, where she spends an unhealthy amount of time thinking about how to kill people and (almost) get away with it. This is almost entirely in relation to her writing, but she keeps her family on their toes by throwing a little doubt in occasionally.

As a fan of Saffron Amatti’s Lucas Rathbone Mystery Series, I know this author loves to serve up delicious plot twists with a side of “I did NOT see that coming!” Amatti did not disappoint in this sixth installment of her psychic murder mystery series. While this review won’t include spoilers, the reader does know from the first sentence that Clara Jenkins, the protagonist’s adventurous girlfriend, is missing. Add to it that he’s forced to join forces with his rival for Clara’s attentions, newspaper man Tommy Kilbourne, and the scene is set for a lot of juicy conflict. But wait, there’s more! Lucas sees ghosts, and one glides onto the scene in the incorporeal form of Sir Monty – a likeable and helpful apparition. Lucas doesn’t usually get so lucky with the latter. Sir Monty’s role in the story also allows the reader to learn important details of Tommy’s backstory – something we need to fully appreciate the characters Amatti is developing throughout her ongoing series. It’s a natural weaving in of critical information and fed to the reader in tasty bites. When I finished the fifth installment in this series (Angel Of Murder), I did not like “nemesis” Tommy Kilbourne. I remember thinking, “oh, Lucas, watch your back!” But author Amatti waved her magic pencil and I found myself lost in Tommy’s world, getting to know the good, the bad, and the ugly – and falling a bit for this troubled and charming man. Amatti knows how to take readers on some surprising emotional journeys. She’ll even twist your heart in a couple of scenes featuring Tommy’s childhood memories. One additional item I’d like to note: The author seemed to dive a little darker in her telling of this tale compared to the previous books in her series. She pulled it off and as a reader, I’d like to see that trend continue! To date, “Betrayal” is my favorite work by Saffron Amatti! The story’s climax and following outcome made sense and brought about a semi-resolution to this latest Lucas Rathbone tale. Why not a full resolution? Because Amatti’s last few sentences of the book found my jaw dropping. Saffron Amatti, you really delivered! I did NOT see that coming – and I loved it! I can’t wait to read how this latest development plays out in book seven!

The second book in the Lucas Rathbone series was a fast paced read with storylines that kept you turning the pages. This book followed all the main characters from the first book as Tommy sends Lucas and Henry on a wild goose chase after a presumably missing Clara. As the three figure out that Tommy had orchestrated this, they turn their anger and confusion to him.

With a little help from a ghost named Sir Monty, we learn a lot about Tommy's past. He was orphaned after being found with his mother's body. Her murderer, roaming free. This is what shapes this book as Tommy is out for revenge and has planned this for a long time.

We see so many sides of Tommy in this book, it's hard to tell which one is real. He's mean and cruel at times, but never really wants to hurt anyone if he can help it. At the beginning of the book, you'll want to write him off, but by the end, you might actually, dare I say, sympathize with him.

Clara is always charging after him, believing he is good and wants to do the right thing. She wants to save him from himself. Lucas wants to protect Clara from herself, Tommy, and the world. But follows her lead every time. Henry's undying love for both of them, helps up keep them on the straight and narrow.

There are many revelations in this book when it comes to Tommy's life and a cliffhanger at the end to make you immediately want to read the next book in the series.

Awesome characters, incredible setting, and great writing coupled with an intriguing mystery make for a perfect read! I highly recommend all the books in this series. You'll fall in love with Clara and Lucas while immersed in 1920s London. EXCELLENT!

What a clever and twisty mystery! The way Amati writes for the period really makes you feel transported back in time when you read. The twists in this book start immediately, and just when you think you have it figured out, it twists again. What a fun story that has you racing along with the characters from the first page to the last! The characters are witty and memorable - they really make the story so much more than a cozy mystery. Clara is so spunky and feisty, while Lucas himself is delightfully awkward. Their dynamic alone makes me want to read more Lucas Rathbone mysteries. Oh, and you can't forget the ghosts!!

Betrayal is the sixth book in the Lucas Rathbone mysteries. This time poor Clara has gone missing and Lucas must work with the dastardly Tommy if he is to stand any chance of finding her alive.

Betrayal continues the story of Lucas and Clara in much the same vein as the previous books and as a consequence I adored it!
