FIND YOUR WRITING TRIBE
Self-publishing platforms have made it easy for authors to get a book into print and into the hands of readers. Publishing in this manner affords the author the ability to familiarize themselves with the process of putting a book together from beginning to end, and it helps them gain a better appreciation for what mainstream publishers do on a larger scale. Equally, it allows the author to build a following which they can use as a negotiating point when attempting to go mainstream or staying in a lane where they are writing for a living.
Several authors who started on that path were eventually put in a place which landed them on the New York Times Bestseller’s list. Case-in-point, the Romancing the Stone series written by Catherine Lanigan writing as Joan Wilder, was on the New York Times bestseller’s list for several weeks, then eventually made into a movie. Robert T. Kiyosaki was turned down by several major houses before he published Rich Dad, Poor Dad, then hit it big on the bestseller’s list too.
You Can Heal Your Life by Louise L. Hay is a powerful exploration on how there is an affirmation for nearly every disease and dis-ease in the mind and body. That one book has been beneficial in my life in so many ways in healing from childhood traumas—and it has helped tremendously in my quest to become healthy, whole, and complete.
Louise Hay’s journey with the book has been most inspiring. She self-published because it was rejected by every major publishing house, then it landed on the New York Times Bestseller’s list for thirteen weeks. From there, she wrote other books that spoke to the power of positive thinking, visualization, and other techniques to manifest healing and abundance. She started a publishing house that is situated in several major countries across the globe and has published authors such as Wayne Dyer, Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra and Suze Orman, and so many others.
Her journey on the literary path goes to show that what’s in, what’s popular, what’s perfect to publish with major houses is subjective.
Mary B. Morrison, who is also a member of my writing tribe, left a six-figure government job to write, self-publish, and promote her book, and landed a six-figure deal with a major publishing house shortly thereafter.
The late, great E. Lynn Harris, famous for his pop the trunk
sales technique where he went door-to-door to beauty salons and other local venues with his first self-published title, eventually landed a deal and had several books on The New York Times list as well.
Kimberla Lawson Roby, too, enjoyed success as a self-published author before an agent landed her with a major publishing house. She eventually commanded a million-dollar deal.
Pat G-Orge-Walker told her story in a tiny pamphlet and was picked up by a major publishing house as well. At the time of this writing, she is a national bestselling author and has had a twenty-plus year career with that publisher.
See a trend here? I certainly did. Self-publish, learn the industry, set some goals, build a name, then spread your wings when opportunities come that will take you to the next level. In this way, you know what you’re giving up and also what you’re getting when you sign with a traditional publishing house. If that is not the route you plan to go, rest assured that thousands of authors have made a living from their self-published efforts. They built a platform and a brand that allowed them to do so.
The people mentioned in this chapter inspired me to follow in their footsteps. That meant, finding a path that helped me to reach readers outside of my circle of influence. Now have a writing family—NK’s Tribe Called Success—that inspires me even more.
Most Tribe members were brought in from different backgrounds in the industry and came for marketing and promotion support, developmental editing , or publishing consultations.
