About this audiobook

Sensible, practical Elinor Tregarth really did plan to be the model poor relation when she moved into Hathergill Hall. She certainly never meant to kidnap her awful cousin Penelope's pet dragon. She never expected to fall in love with the shameless - but surprisingly sweet - fortune hunter who came to court Penelope. And she never dreamed that she would have to enter into an outrageous magical charade to save her younger sisters' futures.

However, even the most brilliant scholars of 1817 England still haven't ferreted out all the lurking secrets of rediscovered dragonkind...and even the most sensible of heroines can still make a reckless wish or two when she's pushed. Now Elinor will have to find out just how rash and resourceful she can be when she sets aside all common sense. Maybe, just maybe, she'll even be impractical enough to win her own true love and a happily ever after...with the unpredictable and dangerous "help" of the magical creature who has adopted her.

A frothy Regency rom-com full of pet dragons and magical misadventures, Scales and Sensibility is a full-length novel and the first in a new series of standalone romantic comedies.

Editor's Note

Jane Austen and Dragons...

Burgis mashes up Jane Austen with dragons, and the result is absolutely delightful. A poor relation is fed up with being mistreated and takes the spoiled daughter of the house’s equally mistreated pet dragon with her in her escape. “Scales and Sensibility” has a sweet romance, elegant prose, and of course, dragons.

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a beautiful and well-written book with a believable plot. It is a great read with a sweet happy ending, filled with drama and cute characters. The book is funny, witty, and an absolute pleasure to listen to, with a marvelous narrator. However, some readers found the plot twist of changing bodies creepy and gross. The ending felt rushed and some characters were one-note, but overall, the book is fantastic, with dragons, historic drama, and romance in a clever mix. It is a cute and captivating story worth reading if you enjoy drama, romance, and magic.

Going in without expecting much, I was surprised by how entertaining, and consistent, the writing and the narration were. There is no excessive worldbuilding or convoluted magic, which also helps.

This was a wonderful read! Im a sucker for all things Austen, and this was a wonderful austen-esque regency romp with an added layer of magical realism. Elinor was a great leading lady, really well rounded and beautifully written. I loved Sir Jesom (her acquired dragon) he was so sweet. A few of the lesser human characters were a little stock & flat, however it didnt impact on the enjoyment of the story. Cant wait to read book 2.

I guess I was expecting more of the storyline to be more magical ✨️ sense it did include a dragon that had Magick. Other than that, it's an enjoyable read.

A fascinating and unique take on a Victorian/ Regency romance. The only reason its only getting a 4 is that the ending felt kind of rushed and a few of the characters were a bit one note.

Honestly, I kept skipping over this book because of the title.
JA is one of my favorite authors but it looked like a bad knockoff.
This book is not that at all.
The author did a beautiful job writing and making the plot believable.
I will be looking for more books by her.

Thank you for writing this beautiful book.

Lots of fun. Good story. Nice Regency feel, with a fantasy twist. (And not with the sex scenes that modern regency style books seem to have. Hurrah!)

Much better than I expected it to be. This was a fun light-hearted book set in regency England. There's a bit of magic, small dragons, humor, and intrigue. Well done.

A fun sweet Regency era fantasy romance. Despite the title and the name of the MC, this is not a rewrite of Sense and Sensibility. It's a clean Regency romance with pet sized dragons. Honestly, she had me sold at dragons no matter the size and the rest of the story didn't disappoint. The MC and LI's relationship felt natural and and unrushed and both were extremely likable. The way it ended was sort of predictable but not in an eye-rolling way, more like "Yes, this is how it should end." with a ending that felt deserved. The narrator was a joy to listen to and each voice was distinct and interesting even among different sexes.

    This was a pleasant surprise.

The writing and narration was superb. Judging by the credits there was a lot of work put into this presentation and that’s evident in how much I enjoyed the story. I didn’t put it down from beginning to end.

    Well done, and thank you!

Finally, a beautiful written fantastical book with fun, meaningful depth. Such a fun, heartfelt romantic and worldly romantical book that doesn't include I wouldn't want my grandkids to read. I plan to share this with my eldest granddaughter (11yrs). I love a good story that shows the intelligence and strength of women in a time period when it's not the norm for women to be, especially when they end up showing up a pathetic suffocating man who deserves it
Additionally, I normally don't enjoy reading the "About the Author" section, but I truly felt the honesty of this author's gratefulness for those who helped her in her quest to write this novel. It probably helps that my Grandmother is a full Welsh woman and told me many stories of playing in the abandoned castles and drinking a bit too much in the pubs as a young lady. ?❤️ The Narrator nailed it, and I hope to listen to many more books from her!
