Penelope's Passion (School of Enlightenment Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 70 ratings

1816 London
After her mother’s death, Penelope Wood’s hope of opening a bakery falls victim to the real need to support herself. When four retired courtesans present her with a temporary yet lucrative path back to her dream, she wants to hear more. Attending the School of Enlightenment, participating in a Virgin Auction, and becoming a courtesan all sound feasible. The most important rule—do not fall in love.

Lord Michael Slade, heir to the Earl of Mansfield, loves his family above all else, cooks for relaxation, and revels in his membership to a discreet spanking club. But his father is ill, and his mother is pushing him to marry. Even so, when he meets a dark-haired beauty who doesn’t mind a good spanking and discovers she’s up for auction, he can’t let her go to another man. He has to have her...at least until he finds a wife.

With an inevitable marriage looming and a vow to remain faithful to his hypothetical bride once he’s engaged, both Penelope and Michael must protect their hearts, even as they find a connection they cannot deny.

Review

"Penelope's Passion is the perfect title for this book - Penelope isn't at all the usual heroine. Thrust into dire financial straits, she ends up in an auction for young beauties, seemingly certain that she can handle whatever gentleman purchases her. Little does she expect to find herself under the protection of the first man she'd met in London, and the first man to ever put her over his knee! This is a wonderful story of forbidden romance from two people in very different life circumstances just trying to do the right thing for both themselves and their families. Hot, sweet, and containing one very hard-handed hero, readers who like an extra spicy historical romance will not want to miss out!" ~Golden Angel, USA Today Bestselling Author

"Maggie Sims takes the time to explore these connections and relationships... Her characters thus are steeped not just in the trappings of privilege, but in a changing world where past legacy and present-day inclinations are tested in new ways." ~D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

From the Inside Flap

Maggie Sims began her love affair with romance before her teen years, drawn to the Regency by her mum’s British influence. In her twenties, she did her best to live the Carrie Bradshaw life in New York City, albeit with less expensive shoes and more books.

Despite reading hundreds of romance novels in her life, she was still blown away when she met the love of her life, an ex-Marine cinnamon roll with creative woodworking and culinary skills.

Having retired from corporate life, they live in Central Texas and are parents to a varying number of dogs and cats. When not writing, Maggie is a wine enthusiast, a travel junkie, and a romance reading fiend. She also sporadically crochets for KnotsofLove.org and does just enough exercise for that second glass of wine at night.

BOOKWORM REVIEW: Penelope's Passion by Maggie Sims
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐SPICE: 🔥🔥🔥This read fed my spicy historical romance and food-loving heart!Penelope Wood just wants to bake. But with her mother's death and poverty looming in the horizon, she is forced to enter the School of Enlightenment and become a courtesan. When her turn comes up in a Virgin Auction, she certainly did not expect her benefactor to be so..enticing.Lord Michael Slade dreads the noose that comes with marrying and becoming an Earl. Until the day he must succumb to his duties arrive, he spends his free time at the club where he is enchanted by Penelope. When she comes up on the auction block, he knew he couldn't let her go to someone else. When they discover that they are a match in every physical way, can these two stop that connection from going further than that? This was a great low-angst steamy read. I love the connection between Michael and Penelope from the get-go, and it just gets hotter and hotter. Their emotional chemistry is also above par. I love going along with them as they navigate through going against the odds with the Ton.I just have to say that this book made me HUNGRY. Not just that kind of hungry, but between the culinary adventures of our main characters and Maggie Sims' integration of food-based descriptions, my stomach was definitely grumbling for a sweet by the end of the book.If you like your historical romance on the spicier end of the Scoville scale, I definitely recommend this read.

I loved the chemistry between Michael and Penelope from the beginning. Because Penelope is a baker, there were plenty of fun food scenes filled with steam. Overall, it’s a well-written story that will keep you hooked all the way to the end!

I enjoyed Michael & Penelope's wasy camaraderie, but Michael dithered way too long for me, which dropped the rating a touch. It was nice to have a heroine with Indian heritage, and I love when MCs love to cook/bake, and that made for some fun food play scenes. Once again, tons of heat 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥+ and kink.

I'm really looking forward to Evan's story, which I think is next.

Penelope's Passion is the second flame regency romance in Maggie Sims School of Enlightenment series. This book brings together two passionate characters, Miss Penelope Woods and Lord Michael Slade, heir to the Earl of Mansfield. What are they passionate for? Cooking, a touch of scandal, and a heavy dose of seduction.

This regency romance falls under the Lord's and Courtesans trope, as Lord Slade purchases Penelope at a private Virginia auction that she enrolled herself in. It is as steamy as it sounds. In fact, it has almost more intimacy than story as the two have a heavily heated romance that goes beyond the innocent deflowering of a newly married lady of the ton story. For those interested in reading this book, it contains a beautifully written happy ending and can easily be read as a stand-alone alone novel if you haven't read book one.

Penelope "Pen" at 18 leaves her home in Peterborough after her mother has passed and goes to London where she stays at the School for Enlightenment which trains young women in the necessary skills of life but also in sex. From here Pen aims to be a courtesan which will make her the most money in the shortest time so that she can open her own bakery as she is excellent at pastry making. When she serendipitously runs into the handsome Michael Lord Slade she scolds him for his muddy boots and he spanks her bare bottom which titillates her. When he learns that Penelope is to be auctioned he bids on her despite his strong upbringing against keeping a mistress. His father, the Earl of Mansfield is very ill and his mother wants Michael to marry this season. Keeping Pen a secret and setting her up in a lovely cottage with housekeepers is fine for Pen as she soon comes to have real feelings for him and the sex is intense, frequent and kept exciting and varied by her which means that Michael has no real desire to find a wife. But he must in order to produce an heir and it should be within his class. But Pen's body is so curvy and delicious and she is so available and willing that he has a huge dilemma. Set in 1816 with morals prescribed to a strict code this illustrates the conflictions well. A charming and erotic tale with a HEA it is a treat to read. Received this arc and have voluntarily reviewed.

This is a low angst story of an earl’s heir who is trying to please his parents by marrying someone suitable and the courtesan he wins in an auction. It is part of a series, but can totally be read as a stand-alone as I did. This book is extremely spicy, all “open door”, with a decent bit of spanking. I enjoyed the premise of this book. The FMC had attended “The School of Enlightenment”. This is a place where women could go to learn a variety of things—to be a governess, to run a household, to be a courtesan, to better know what to expect from the marriage bed. Our FMC dreams of owning her own bakery, so she chooses the path of courtesan as the quickest to save money towards that goal. She participates in a courtesan auction (in her case, a virgin auction) and the MMC immediately wants her (after she hands him a set-down and he puts her over his knee). It was refreshing to have a MMC who had a loving and supportive relationship with his parents. We have a FMC who chose to be a courtesan and goes into that profession with her eyes open. Both main characters enjoy cooking, and the FMC enjoys baking, so there is a healthy dollop of kitchen and food play. There is a lack of snobbery and judgement by the peers in this book, which was also refreshing. There is a LOT of inner dialogue for both characters (in this case, italicized internal thoughts and self-conversations), which is not my favorite literary tool. That is a personal dislike of mine-I realize others will likely not be bothered by it-but it was very prevalent and did take away from my enjoyment of it book. This is a straightforward tale of the journey to love for a first-time courtesan and the peer who had to have her—there are no major plot twists, no angsty drama. Just a good, old-fashioned, hanky-spanky love story.

Tropes: class difference, courtesan/protector, insta-lust, virgin auction
