About the author

Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author, Astrid V.J. was born in South Africa. She is a trained social anthropologist and certified transformational life coach. She currently resides in Sweden with her husband and their two children. In early childhood, she showed an interest in reading and languages—interests which her family encouraged. Astrid started writing her first novel at age 12 and now writes fantasy in a variety of genres, exploring her passion for cultures and languages. When she isn’t writing, Astrid likes to read, take walks in nature, play silly games with her children, do embroidery, and play music.
Astrid writes transformation fiction: incorporating transformation principles in novels, rather than writing another self-help book. She loves exploring the human capacity for transformation and potential to achieve success in the face of adversity. Astrid is interested in minority group questions, considerations on social standards of beauty and the negative consequences these have, and would like to make the fantasy genre accessible to people of non-white, non-Christian backgrounds. Astrid feels the fantasy genre has become too restrictive with limited representations of race, ethnicity and culture. She seeks to explore other paths on this writing journey, incorporating her background in anthropology and psychology to create engaging experiences, which also provide food for thought on the diverse topics she finds most important. These include: racism, minority rights, cultural diversity, culture change, intolerance, humanity’s environmental impact, the representation of people on the autism spectrum in among the general populace, the human capacity for transformation, and much more.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2024Okay, there's is a lot of idealiy in this piece, but it's still a beautiful tale. Intricate and vivid, this story comes to life in your minds eye thanks to the beautiful prose of the author.
This is the kind of romance I do not mind reading. One where the story itself is strong and gripping yet it would not exist without the love between the characters. It's also a 100% clean read. My favorite kind.
Don't miss out on this tale of second chances, destiny, love, and triumph.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021The Wordmage gathers his audience and immediately immerses them deep in the vivid imagery of his richly told story. A healer, cousin to the queen, takes a risk, makes a sacrifice, finds something she never expected. A fast moving story full of betrayal, love, and at times, desparation. Interesting combination of historic almost fairytale-esqe setting and sci-fi tech.
Strongly character driven, the narrative sometimes feels like it is skipping over parts of the plot but that is because the focus is on the emotional moments and the motivations. The characters - their growth, passions, fears - it all comes alive. Very different type of story. I also liked the way it was told in 2 parts, and that what might have been happily ever after in another story was only an interlude.
This is another of the Wordmage's Tales, and is a standalone story, although it is connected to The Apprentice Storyteller and gives a few more glimpses into the Hadrian Empire.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2021How often do we allow our self-limiting beliefs and fears control our destiny? How many chances do we let flow pass because we don’t believe ourselves worthy of happiness? What makes one worthy of love, appreciation, and happiness? All of these age-old questions are explored in Astrid V.J.’s The Last Warrior.
Cynthia has long believed herself unworthy of her position, her title, love itself. She carries a great weight in the form of regrets about situations beyond her control. She gives out love in every direction but her own.
Flynn carries his own burdens, but unlike Cynthia, he does not allow the grief to set up residence. He sees her for the jewel that she is and fights to remind her daily of this fact.
Together, theirs is a story of love. Love of one another. Love of oneself. The power of love in forgiveness and release.
As always, Astrid is a master of her craft. I imagine all the images as vividly as a movie reel playing in my head and dancing over the tops of my imagination. She takes difficult topics and addresses them in ways that are relatable and real.
A brilliant addition by a truly impeccable story crafter.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2021I think readers who enjoy a gentle fantasy with a message should like this novella, which is a companion piece to the author's Wishmaster series.
Once again, apprentice storyteller Jo entertains the reader and his fictional audience, this time with a tale about magical healer Cynthia and her love for the warrior named Flynn, the last of his tribe.
It's a story full of magic, intrigue, and love and leaves Jo, and the reader, wanting to know more about the participants. A pleasant, relaxing, fantasy tale.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2021Another whimsical and detailed short by Astrid that I enjoyed. I probably would've liked it more if it was two parts since I felt there was more to the events of the story that I needed in order to best understand the conflict. Otherwise, the characters were very colorful and interesting and any story that can get me choked up is worth while. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2022Another amazing read from the Wordmage series. I adore Cynthia’s and Flynn’s story and loved the question posed mid-tale - you don’t think that fairytales end at marriage, do you? :) Cynthia, a healer and a princess, saves a poisoned warrior, the last of his kind when she and her cousin are visiting the Emperor of the Haldrian Empire. His only chance at survival is to go with the healer, which puts Cynthia and her queen cousin in more danger than they are already in up to their elbows. Sure enough, years down the line, trouble comes calling. I loved the twisty ending in the vein of The Mummy and Evie playing around with the Black Book of the Ancient Egyptians, but no more spoilers for ya, read it yourself.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2021The emotions of love, conflict mixed with a magical healer bring this story to life. Conflict brings two characters together, and their relationship grows and develops. This is a growth story, and through the development of the characters, a wonderful tale comes forth through the word pictures painted throughout the book. This book isn’t that long, but still, the story develops and flows. I would recommend this book. This may be a fantasy book, but there are other genre elements sprinkled throughout the pages.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2022Cynthia's story as a healer who struggles with her past and own self-doubts is a very therapeutic read, particularly if you can relate to how these challenges can hold you back from pursuing relationships or taking risks. I really liked the aspect of the story in which Cynthia must ultimately take care of herself in order to reach her potential and become a stronger, more confident healer in her community, as well as realize her personal happiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story of great characters
Great narration and amazing story. Cynthia and Flynn are so lovable. Transported to this netherworld while reading the book. New to this Genre but found it very absorbing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must-read for fantasy lovers
The Last Warrior is part of The Wordmage’s Tales and accompanies The Apprentice Storyteller (The Wishmaster’s Series).
Jo, is the curious spellbinding apprentice to Storyteller Viola Alerion that readers may have first met in The Apprentice Storyteller and he starts the story. I like the feeling of being part of his group of listeners as he takes me on a journey through the pages of the love story between Flynn and Cynthia and more. As he draws us into the space between waking and sleeping that he creates when he recounts stories.
What’s the main story? Cynthia has struggled against the powers guiding her life. She wants to take back control. She wants the freedom to marry the man she loves, and she wants to live up to the expectations of her family. Cynthia is one of the last remaining members of the royal family of Oruna, she is sister to the Queen and a healer. She is someone that follows her instincts, and helps where she is needed most. Filled with self-doubt about her abilities.
What did I like the most about this story? I liked Cynthia and her story. I enjoyed watching her grow from doubt to strength in herself, and no I’m not telling you what that strength means to the rest of her family or the trials they’ll face. Spoilers!
Self-love is as important as love and overcoming the darkness within as well as without takes courage. Astrid V.J writes characters that are believable in any setting.
Going book nerdy for a second - one of the things I love about books is how they are formatted. Astrid V.J has produced a beautifully formatted piece here, that adds to the elegance of the story. I particularly like that chapters are broken up by a small image of the W which is the W in The Wordmage’s Tales and a capitalisation of the first letter of the first word of the chapter.
The next book in the series is Warring Lions, a tale of self-love and overcoming the darkness in our hearts, and which offers a further glimpse into the cultures of the Haldrian empire.
