      I HUMMED TO myself a little as I entertained a fantasy that I had been having for weeks now. Smiling to myself, I thought about the meeting I was having with my favorite group of students this afternoon. I was hoping it might turn into a bit of group fun.

      Though it seemed exceptionally far-fetched.

      I taught math at the local community college, and I’d been there ten years since my late twenties. Many of my students called me Ms. H—my name was Alana Hawthorne—and I had always enjoyed that comfortable rapport.

      I liked my job—I did. But it was a little… familiar at this point. I had been here a decade, and I had the job down. Maybe that’s why I had been entertaining this fantasy.

      But, also, there had been a little… incident.

      Marcus Williams, Danny Santos, Ben Nichols, and Niles Winters met with me regarding their class project once a week. It wasn’t required, but they did. They would ask questions, get my suggestions, and ask for guidance on the project’s direction. I thought it was sort of cute.

      All of them were 21 years old, except for Ben, who was 23. I knew because I had specifically checked their student files. It made me feel better to know I was fantasizing about students who were 21 years or older. I was slightly less of a dirty old woman now.

      Our meetings always had an enjoyable vibe to them. Jokes, laughter, chatting about non-math subjects. But then something happened.

      One afternoon we all sat in a circle at some student desks in an empty classroom. We had been discussing an aspect of their project, and I happened to glance over at Niles, who was sitting to my right.
