When I was eight, I saved a boy from getting snakebit. Him and me was the best of friends after that, right up ‘til high school hit and we was both forced to move on.

Years later, Riley Treadwell walked back into my life, all growed up, and with him come a monster-sized problem. Seemed trouble was brewing in Lake Burton, trouble big and mean enough to take out docks and scare the life outta anybody what seen it.

Then there was the toxic waste somebody dumped into the local waterways. Nobody was talking, but somebody sure was guilty, and I aimed to find out who.

Then things heated up and me and Riley found ourselves neck deep in trouble on a whole new level. This time, though, I weren’t sure if I could save him from the monsters, and the humans, gunning for us both.

    Sunshine Walkingstick investigates the unusual in her small Southern town. That might include missing rings, polluted waterways, runaway dogs… or the odd monster or two…

    Right off the bat, this book began a little differently. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, because the choice to write in the protagonist’s dialect was a little off putting. I admit, I was wrong.
    First, my issue with the dialect is mostly that it’s often hard to read an accent that isn’t your own, and as a Brit in the USA, I have enough issues with that!
    This, however, was a bold choice and very well executed, illustrating well Sunny’s description of herself as a “backwoods hick”.
    As we work our way through Sunny’s story, it becomes readily apparent that Sunny might live in the woods, but she is a strong, smart, and savvy woman. She has been through the wringer, life hasn’t always dealt her the best cards, but she works hard and tries her best. Her resolute behaviour keeps her going, even when the odds are against her.
    The only time she comes across as weak, is when she shies away from people, often at her own expense. It’s the kind of behaviour that comes from trauma and experience, and yes, Sunny has those in spades.

    The book itself also impressed me, because it’s the first I’ve read in a while that actually follows the old ways. Sunny investigates the wyrd as it were, and quietly deals with it- either for barter or for money, it doesn’t matter. Religion plays an important part in her life, and I was definitely reminded of the Granny Women of the Appalachians when reading the book, which was a pleasant surprise.

    Ultimately, this book grabbed my attention, and Sunny’s engaging and believable personality, kept me reading. The book’s premise is entertaining, and I definitely look forward to reading more about Sunny and her friends and family.
    This book is a little quirky, but those who enjoy paranormal mysteries or contemporary fantasy might just find this one to their taste.

    This book stood out for me because it had substance to the story. It showed that Sunshine was no stranger to things that went bump in the night. She has a long history with Riley, and never quite believed anything could come of it since she was made to feel less than everyone else around her. The only thing that had changed that was her little boy Henry taken too soon from her life. And then Riley stepped back into her life and turned her inside out. What a tangled situation this was, but Riley wasn't willing to give up no matter the obstacles. This is definitely an author and a series that I will continue to seek out. Things aren't done with Sunshine and Riley, and I can't wait to see what Fame will do to Harley once he finds out his part in the whole mess that was the "Greenwood Five".

    I am a bit ambivalent about this one. I give it 5 stars because I really did enjoy reading it, I thought the characters were really interesting, I liked both the Southern "feel" and the "out in the woods" feel to it, and, while some reviewers objected to it, I liked the "Huck Finn" vernacular of the lead character (she reminded me of some of my cousins). I also liked the small town/lingering high school hurts and grudges aspect (reminded me of my small town). Still, I wish it had been--and believe with this author's obvious talent it could have been--so much more.

    With a name like Sunshine Walkingstick and a northwest Georgia setting I was expecting (or at least hoping) for some Cherokee folklore and the monster to be along the lines of the Uktena or some other Native American lake monster. Instead, the "monster" involved some generic sea god, and although the character refers to herself as a "mixed breed", that's as close as it gets to any ethnicity, not even informing the reader which breeds she's a mix of. And, as a child of the great 1950s Giant Atomic Giant Creature Features, I was expecting so much more of the toxic waste dumping.

    In short, I will be reading more in the hope there are better haints AND because this really was, on the whole, fun read, but...

    I really enjoyed this book. From what I read of the critiques, people didn't think her countrified speech was real. Sounded just like everybody else around here to me. So, when you first start the book that's what catches your attention.
    But, it doesn't stay like that. She mourns for her baby boy. She's an investigator like none you've ever heard of before. She knows all about the deep woods, and she's as country as it gets. She's got a rough family and she's not particularly proud of them, but she loves them anyway. Then there is a mystery, there is something in the lake. Her uncle, an illegal moonshiner, tells her that something is messing with the water in the stream .
    Sunshine starts to investigate. I won't run the story by telling you any more. I like the character she plays. I like the situation. The writer doesn't follow in anyone else's footsteps. I read so much, that to me, that is a tremendous advantage. Despite her countrified speech, it is obvious that she has a large and discerning vocabulary. I truly enjoyed the book, but I also enjoy Shakespeare and Mark Twain.

    This was a unique read. I disagree with the use of the word Urban in its description. Not when the whole book is written in Appalachian dialogue and slang. There were definite mysteries and unexplainable events. It is rather sad and somewhat gloomy. I guess it would be sadder if it had been written in standard English. I will not seek out the next book in the series.
