    Mythical Heat - Cassandra Vayne

    The Summoner

Alex stumbled when he took a sharp turn around a corner, scraping his forearm on a brick wall. He ignored the pain and kept going. The sounds of yelling and laughter kept him from slowing down. The bruises and cuts on his face and knuckles were bitter reminders of the group chasing him and what he risked if they caught up to him.

He ducked behind a car in a parking lot, keeping his head down and his feet behind a tire. Alex's lungs and muscles burned as he tried in vain to breathe quietly in order to hear the footsteps of his pursuers.

    Where'd he go?

Let's check over here. Alex didn't breathe a sigh of relief when he heard them heading away from his hiding place until he was safely home behind several locked doors and miles away from these guys. He peeked out over the trunk of the car then scampered away into a nearby park.

At the base of a tree, Alex fell to his knees. He leaned back against the cool bark and looked around but he didn't see anyone. It was late and most people were either still partying or at home in this suburb. The wood chip mulch felt sharp under his palms and Alex it gave him an idea he kicked himself for not thinking of sooner. He grabbed a larger chunk and drew a circle in the dirt around himself. He marked each compass point, then used the chip to open up the wounds on his knuckles. Alex used his blood to outline the circle around him.

May the gods answer my call and protect me. He gasped, tears mingling with sweat as his adrenaline wained and pain threatened to overwhelm him. Because one of your children is in some deep fucking trouble.

Before he could feel any magic flowing, Alex heard a group of people running toward him.

Could he have gone this way? Someone hissed as the number of footsteps increased.

Fuckin' fairy couldn't have gone far.

Alex rolled his eyes while he tried desperately to keep his breathing quiet. The circle around him hummed and glowed but before he could feel relieved, it attracted the attention of his attackers.

    What the fuck is that?

Alex's gaze flicked back and forth from the sputtering circle to the group of homophobes hunting him down. If he crossed the boundary, the summoning would be ruined but if he didn't run, they'd beat him to death before it could be completed.

    He's over here!

Alex's heart went deadly cold. Unable to move, he sang his fingers into the dirt, drawing on whatever magic he could to power the circle. His body couldn't muster any more strength after running for so long and taking multiple blows. The circle barely held on as his attackers surrounded him.

    You think he's fucking praying?

Nah, he’s just used to being on his knees. One of the men said.

'Original.' Alex thought. 'I can't go out because of someone so lame.' He took a shuddering breath and gave one last push of power into his call before he had to jump back from a swing of a bat, narrowly avoiding a hit to the head but the bat slammed into his shoulder.

C'mon! Get up and fight! You were talking so much shit before.

'Whistling through that gap in your teeth I gave you, huh?' Alex had to content himself with being snarky in his head since he couldn't gather enough breath to speak. His shoulder was broken and the agony clouded his vision. Between the ringing in his ears and ominous chuckling from the men around him, Alex swore he could hear hooves heading towards the park.

Shit, is that the fuckin' cops? Alex heard the voices now as a distant warble
