When Lilly goes away to college, she finds herself caught between two loves — and plunged into a titanic battle between good and evil.

Since she was eight years old, Lilly Rayne Nightingale felt like fate was trying to wipe away her existence through a series of odd, near fatal incidences. Luckily, her best friend Will was always one step ahead of fate, preventing her from being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Will was her knight in shining armor...until he broke her heart after their one and only kiss.

On Lilly’s first day of college, she meets Brand Cole. Intrigued by Brand, Lilly must decide whether or not she can give up her adolescent fantasy of being reunited with Will or allow Brand the opportunity to conquer her heart. Not only do Will and Brand both love Lilly, they share a dark secret neither wants Lilly to discover. Lilly thinks fate is after her, once again, when a new series of attempts on her life start to take place. But she soon learns someone of flesh and blood is trying to kill her this time.

Once upon a time, a little girl was born on a cold winter morning in the heart of Seoul, Korea. She was brought to America by her parents and raised in the Deep South where the words ma'am and y'all became an integrated part of her lexicon. She wrote her first novel at the age of eight and continued writing on and off during her teenage years. In college she studied biology and chemistry and finally combined the two by earning a master's degree in biochemistry. After that she moved to Yankee land where she lived for four years working in a laboratory at Cornell University, homesickness and snow aversion forced her back south where she lives in the land which spawned Jim Henson, Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey, John Grisham and B.B. King. After finding her Prince Charming, she gave birth to a wondrous baby girl and they all lived happily ever after.

Bad story. Racially insensitive characters.

Bad story. Racially insensitive characters.
I never leave book reviews but after reading this book it's necessary. The story line is weird, corny, and not realalistic. The characters suck and I'm really upset about the way the black best friend Tara is presented. At first I was happy to see some (however tiny) amount of diversity displayed in a YA book, but as a black woman i feel her insulted because news flash no matter what you see on tv black women do not act like that. And yes I am from the south like the black girl Tara. And in one page the main character teases the black best friend about her nappy hair. Refering to our hair like that is something you never. I don't even use that word. Just horrible. And she named the black girl "Tarajinka Shovanda Jenkins". I mean really?

A slow burn, as I believe readers call it. Started out at a slow pace and then steadily picked up from there. I was first confused trying to figure out exactly WHAT the characters were as it gave me YUGE twilight vibes. Vampires, yes, to a point...but also angels.
One thing this story did to me was kept me guessing. I didn't know exactly what Brand or Will was until Malcom came into play and explained things to Lilly.
I have a feeling about Lilly and why she is so special but I will not speculate on the review as I do not want to spoil the story.

Lily's had a tough childhood. With a mom who wasn't really much of a mother, and a father she's never known, growing up in a trailer park could have been hell. Fortunately, her best friend, Tara, and Tara's grandmother, are her true family. Without them, she doesn't know what she would have done. The dialogue between these lovely characters is snappy and loving, and I completely enjoyed their world.

One of Lily's best friends growing up is Will, a gorgeous guy that she fell in love with. But when she tried to declare her love, Will dumped her hard and disappeared from her life. Hurt but determined to get on with her life, Lily starts college with Tara, only to discover that Will goes to the same school. Ouch!

Then a new gorgeous guy comes into Lily's life, and he is everything she could ever want in a soul mate, but is he too good to be true? In fact, he isn't what he seems to be, at all.

Angels, good and bad, populate this inventive paranormal, and the writing is top-notch.

Still, I think the best part of this book may be the narration. Christa Lewis kept me listening past the beginning when the h read like a bit of a goodie two shoes, which I typically find dull. Happily, the story picked up, and the pacing was very good, giving a sense of something not quite right without going overboard. When the badness comes along, you've already sensed it, even though you don't know what to expect.

Having read book one, I can't wait to pick up book two.

This review is long overdue. I realized yesterday that, though I have rated this book in the past, I never actually did a written review of this series. This gives me the awesome excuse to read these books again.

West does an excellent job telling the story of Lilly Rayne Nightingale and her introduction to the paranormal world of the Watchers. Lilly is a strong, compelling character with a kind heart and an abundance of love and friendship within her circle.

Characters from Lilly’s circle, (including Will, Brand and Malcolm), bring reminiscence, romance, friendship and heat. They also come with secrets. Lilly’s best friend Tara is tough, funny and loving. These characters are all lovable, and their different personalities flavor the Watchers’ stories in a very enticing way.

The story is well written and complex. With precision, West weaves together a fabric of new adulthood, new love, mysteries, thrills and an exciting new paranormal world.

This read is thoroughly enjoyable, and I highly recommend it.

Although it is listed as a Young Adult book, I would classify it more toward Coming of Age or New Adult due to some mature content.

I really loved getting introduced to the Watcher world. It was so cool and intricate. I loved how angels are portrayed in this novel and the greed and human emotions are super real. Lily was a great character. She is so fun and witty. I love how she stood on her own and never took crap from people. And, Brandon was a true book boyfriend. Will I didn't like so much, but I am waiting for him to have his moment. All in all, great world building and sweet romance. Definitely a one-click YA romance.

“Hold on,” Brand said. It was then I learned what a Porsche 911 could really do.

This book is wild. Forget the premise of New or Old guy. This is Twilight on steroids but still a clean romance. I must not have read the title because I didn’t know this book is a paranormal. What’s better than one boyfriend? Three obsessed angels stealing kisses and rescuing you every time you get kidnapped (if I had a nickel for every time that happened, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice).

My biggest problem is the love bombing. Brand’s genuine love for Lilly is literally instant and so strong I thought he was a serial killer for most of the book. Lilly just wants someone to hold hands with and let her split the bill. Too bad she ends up with three bloodthirsty angels and a couple of werewolves to juggle between classes.

I discovered this book/series when I was a little past the “young adult” genre.. like 23 years old? And I am 32 now and I still reread this series. Angels, demons, falling in love, a world beyond the beginning of this series. SJ is such a talented author. I am a person who reads reviews but sadly doesn’t write them often enough because I just don’t know how to tell everyone this is a series/book you need to read! I don’t want to tell you about the plot and what to except. Just know this book and series is addicting and you can’t put it down until the last book in the entire universe. So just buy it you won’t regret it

This was a great new concept to a PNR story and I really enjoyed it. Interesting narrative and it was well paced and intriguing enough to keep me interested and reading more. I also loved that I didn't guess the way the story was going and that the author kept me on the edge of my sofa. Looking forward to reading the next one.
