Betrayal
Iona never wanted to be Queen. As the youngest of three siblings, having both an elder brother and an elder sister, she should never have felt the weight of the jewel-encrusted crown upon her head. For the past five and a half months, however, the once free-spirited and supposedly too adventurous Princess Iona had been forced to do exactly that.
Fate was a cruel-hearted bitch.
If it wasn’t for the warm sympathies and readily available assistance from the Duke of Nord, her late father’s lifelong friend, Iona doubted she’d have been able to cope at all. Even so, she wanted nothing more than to rip the stupid, shiny paperweight off her head and run away. She wanted to just disappear into the forest north of the castle, climb mountain after mountain until she finally knew for sure whether the rumors were true. Maybe she wouldn’t come back.
Iona let out a sigh and dragged her gaze away from the tall window that faced those mountains. I might as well squash that dream. That dream, and every other she’d ever had.
If I may … ask a question, Highness?
Her handmaid’s gentle question drew Iona out of her head, and she sat up a little straighter self-consciously. Yes, of course.
Iona glanced around the room she’d opted to take refuge in and restrained a wince. Her internal timeline of hiding away only until Molly finished tidying up had about run its course. She barely felt like she’d taken a breath.
Molly, who’d been with Iona since before Iona had hit puberty, patted her hands on her ever-present apron and cast a glance toward the closed door. Her hesitancy piqued Iona’s curiosity. Molly was a sweet woman, but rarely overly cautious when it was just the two of them. Finally, in little more than a whisper, she asked, What are you going to do about the marriage restriction?
Iona stared at her. She blinked. I’m sorry. The what?
You know,
Molly said, moving and perching her butt on the armrest of the sofa beside Iona’s chair so she could continue to speak at a quiet volume. That old law requiring you to marry before your formal coronation.
Something in Iona’s chest seized and she lurched forward, fingers digging into the upholstery of what had been her father’s favorite reading chair. "The what?"
Molly blinked at her, hazel eyes going wide. Y-you did know about it, of course … right?
She pulled her lips between her teeth and promptly released them. I heard about it from my sister, who overheard it straight from the Duke while he was explaining it to his wife.
Iona fought to remember how to breathe, but somehow pushed a single word through her lips. When?
Oh, ah, a day or three ago, maybe?
Molly offered a faint shrug. Her eyes widened and she jumped to her feet. I’m so sorry, Highness! If it’s supposed to be a secret, I swear I’ve not said anything to anyone. I only asked you because I thought it was strange that you’re getting married so soon and I didn’t even know!
Iona managed to unclench a hand and waved it jerkily through the air as she shook her head. No. It’s not that.
She drew a deep, painful breath. Sit back down.
Molly dropped straight back onto her bottom. Your Highness?
Tell me exactly what your sister heard.
Molly licked her lips and fiddled with her hands in her lap. Ah, she said, she was in the bedroom sprucing it up when the Duke suddenly pulled the Duchess inside and sat her down on the bed. My sister was upset, because she’d just made it nice and pretty and she thought they were going to mess it up, you know?
Iona grimaced. Ew.
She wasn’t a prude, but she’d grown up with that man. Some people were better off remaining sexless humanoids in her mind.
A flicker of amusement lightened Molly’s eyes and she relaxed a bit. But instead, the Duke started talking, real excitedly I guess. He said he’d just come from another meeting with Parliament and had been informed there was a problem with your proper ascension to the throne.
Iona frowned as she thought back. You said this was a few days ago?
She was supposed to be attending all Parliament meetings now, but she was sure there hadn’t been one for nearly two weeks.
Molly nodded. I heard the story, um, I think two days ago. My sister heard it one or two days before that at most.
That definitely didn’t add up, but Iona kept that to herself for the moment. Go on.
"When the Duchess asked, the Duke said there’s an old law still on the books that a single woman, no
