Please be aware, this book is not for everyone.
TW: violence, unwanted groping. Overall So, this book reminds me of a couple of things. One of them being The Hunger Games. Men enter in this Sovereign’s Tournament to marry The Savior. They basically have to kill each other or die during challenges, which reminds me of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. Overall, I really liked reading this violent story. Unfortunately, all the little “twists” at the end weren’t surprising. I guessed all of them early on in the book. That’s the main reason why this book isn’t getting a higher rating. I like Jenna Moreci’s writing, for the most part. I’ll definitely pick up The Savior’s Sisters when it comes out. I’d love to reread this story from Leila’s point of view. I just really hate the terminology she used. There were times that I could have sworn this book was written by a man. This book was an easy book to read. I followed along with the audiobook. I can’t stay focused right now to save my life when it comes to fantasy. Please be aware, this book is not for everyone. Characters Leila: She’s by far the best character in this book. She’s a character with many secrets and she’s does a lot of things she should not be doing in this competition. I love that she can stand up for herself when she needs to. Tobias: He’s kind of obnoxious. There are times where he doesn’t stick up for Leila, in fear that the other competitors would find out that he’s not really there to win The Savior’s heart. He’s the only one of the group who entered the tournament with intentions that did not involve The Savior, but his family. For that, I do like him. The Other Competitors: They are all pigs. I realize they were all put in this book with the intention that they’re going to die anyway. So why not make them the most dumb and disgusting group of men ever? The Challenges I love that not all of the challenges were violent. I feel like Jenna got really creative with adding challenges without violence. Some of the challenges reminded me of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. The labyrinth reminds me of the maze so much. There are so many things that can happen in the labyrinth. It’s insane. Definitely some of my favorite “gruesome” scenes happened in there. The Romance The romance fell kind of flat for me. I feel like I need more time with Tobias and Leila. I think that their romance will bloom in the next book after The Savior’s Sister. I’m hoping their romance will bloom. I’m also really hoping that we’ll get more of their romance. Who knows? They might be too busy trying to save their lives.

Jenna Moreci has helped guide me through the writing process for roughly two years now and it’s been a pleasure to finally read one of her novels. Being dyslexic, I don’t get around to reading much if there isn’t an audiobook available, and thankfully there was an option for purchase. Nick Denton brought this character-rich world to life with his many distinct voices and enthusiastic inflection. I particularly loved his take on Flynn - he sounded so punchable. But let’s get into the meat of the review, which won’t really focus on plot, but more of my feelings. Spoilers WILL be interspersed throughout this review, so if you’re looking for a general summarizing thought...mix The Hunger Games with Survivor, add in real romance, make it R, and make it way more interesting. The Savior’s Champion.

    SPOILERS...kind of...

    The Good

    1. Characters.

I was very concerned that because there are 20 competitors in The Soverigns Tournament, that I’d quickly lose track of who was who. Jenna gets around this by allowing some to fall into the background for awhile while others get their time to shine. Naturally some are killed off right away, but that’s just the purpose of some characters: cannon fodder.

    Standouts:

My personal favorite was Kaleo - but for a strange reason. He’s a murderous sociopath who is quite possibly the most despicable character in the book (apart from Brontes.) I love a good villain, and he is the antithesis to Tobias, our incredibly relatable, punching bag of a lead. He attacks all of Tobias’s weaknesses and does so right from the start.

Orion was a great sort of “father figure”that Tobias had recently lost, which was a great change of pace from the ravenous competitors.

Delphi was a joy every minute she was on the page, basically like a good version of Littlefinger - knowing literally everything.

Of course Leila is fantastic and I loved what happens with her character.

And Flynn... where to start with Flynn. You know what. I just won’t say anything. We all know how we feel about this idiot. But just in case we don’t...he’s the embodiment of a punchable little twat...and yet he’s just oh so fun to read about :). Love ya Flynn - ya dingus.

Ironically... I would have liked to have seen more of my favorite character Kaleo. For as great as he was, he had very little page time until it mattered. BUT, that’s kind fine?

For the record, there were no character I didn’t like - simply ones that I wish had a little more to do. Specifically, Bjorne, Lucian, Family, Garrick, and Raphael oddly enough. For as much page time as Raphael got, I really didn’t get to know him as much as I think Jenna wanted me to.

The Trio of lords (Neil Caesar and Beau) were all insufferable and I frickin loved them for it.

    2. The Challenges.

I was about worried that the challenges would feel repetitive. I knew they’d all be different, but for some dumb reason I didn’t expect Tobias to have a different reaction or feeling or motivational approach to each challenge. It got really interesting once Leila officially entered the picture.

    3. The Conflict.

There was so much of it. I love a good drama and while this was filled with action, blood, and sex, sometimes bloody sex, this book at its core was HARD drama. Everyone had something up their sleave, a gripe with another champion, a secret relationship hiding in the shadows, or even a hidden motivation for their entry into the tournament. This book ALWAYS had something happening, and Tobias was always the under dog.

    4. The Satisfaction

At the end of the day, a story needs to be satisfying. This one was. Plain and simple. I was never disappointed with any of the reveals, fight outcomes, motivations, or really even character-page time. (It’s a big cast) The Savior’s Champion left me satisfied, and I can’t wait for the sequel.

    5. Jenna.

She knows EXACTLY what she wants her book to say and how she wants it to be told. She had a very distinct voice with a “zero breaks on violence” policy. Respect. She practices what she preaches, and I’m sure it will only get better. She really cares about her work, and it shows.

I could go on and on about specific good details, but at the end of the day, if you like a solid romance about hot people murdering each other for a god-queens with more substance than it let’s onand a cast of diverse and charming characters, then this is the book for you.

    Okay, we gotta do this.

The Bad: AND THIS HAS SPOILERS - it’s more for Jenna.

There is ONE glaring weakness to this book and I think it’s just me. God-Mode Teleportation.

I love Tobias. I really do. He has a clear motive and is truly a great protagonist - one is the best actually..BUT. I never once felt like he was in any real danger because of one specific moment.

    SPOILERS:

    The Artist vs The Giant.

I really loved this fight. It was brutal and Tobias got thrashed early on. But then the blessing kicked in and the fight suddenly became so one sided that I didn’t really care that much, because I knew that Toby-saurus was going to win. After that, he was blessed many times over, which ended up being awesome, like I loved the twist at the end and connecting the dots, but after he handled the biggest physical threat with magic assistance, I just felt less tension. I kinda hoped the magic was a placebo effect and he was just going to let his cunning with the mirrors take over.

It was fine as it was, just left me a bit disappointed and made Tobias feel TOO untouchable, even if he still gets absolutely thrashed later on. It was a small gripe, but one that did effect my perspective for the rest of the book, which is why it loses a half star for me personally. At the end of he day, the outcome would have been the same, it’s just how we got there. (I understand why the teleportation was used, as it set up Tobeila’s escape, but still.)

OKAY. Parting thoughts. Really frickin fun read. I couldn’t put it down, and hope to hear Nick Denton return the sequel. I’m an absolute slam purchase, and I highly recommend this epic tale.

    4.5/5

If this was a movie it would not be a PG-13 young adult fantasy romance but rather a rated R summer blockbuster. It would be rated R do to graphic violence, deaths, language, and some sensuality. The author weaves together a great story which takes turns you would not expect that will twist your heart and leave you begging for more in the end if you're patient enough.

Jenna knows how to write incredibly intense action scenes full of emotion while also writing character scenes that are just as intense and full of development. The world that she creates for Tobias seems to have a rich history but she only allows the reader to see Snippets of it as the majority of the book takes place during the tournament. A careful reader may be able to pick up the hints and clues to the few twists she has set up throughout story. Still you're never really sure exactly where she's going until the very end. There's also some excellent moments that feels real.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a thrilling action packed adventure with romance and mystery woven throughout. I do caution that they are scenes of graphic violence and events. The romance is mostly reduced to kissing but they are some sensual situations that do go a little further, however it is balanced well with emotion so as not to seem out of place.

The only real complaint I have about the story is that the foul language is reduced to variations of the F-bomb and the c words for male and female genitalia. While the main character does not do more than think variations of the F-bomb other characters seem only to be able to use same few curses to the point that it did slap me out of the story at some points. This is mainly due to the fact that while I know people do curse to varying degrees it is not often to the same few vulgar curse every time.

Still there was a great deal for readers to enjoy and writers to learn from in purchasing and reading this book. I just hope that sequel is on its way.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're a fan of fantasy, or just good writing in general, don't miss this book.
Reviewed in Canada on April 24, 2018
Firstly, I was given an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, so here we go.

Tobias lives a simple life. A former promising artist, he puts his dreams on hold to become a labourer to support his mother and sister following a tragic family accident. He does what he can to help his family, putting them first and foremost in his life. While he misses his art, he has no plans at all to leave home or change his current profession.

The Sovereign's Tournament turns all of that upside down. Tobias has no interest whatsoever at first, not until he learns that just by entering he could make a huge difference in his family's life. For that main reason, and also with some convincing by his best friend, he soon finds himself one of twenty men in a bloody, no-holds-barred tournament fighting for the hand of a woman he's never even met.

With each challenge - and each brush with death - Tobias quickly realizes he's in over his head. The complex and diverse relationships he finds along the way, both with his co-competitors and the Savior's entourage, only make things even more conflicting. Especially his dealings with Leila, the healer who takes care of the men in between challenges. Will he be able to see the tournament through to the end? Does he want to, even?

Author Jenna Moreci has done a fantastic job with world building in this book, the first of a series. The lore of Thessen and culture and practices of its inhabitants unfolds organically as you progress through the novel, never feeling forced or heavy-handed. You learn all the higher society protocols and customs along with Tobias, along with the myriad rules and technicalities of the tournament.

The characters are all well-developed and distinct from one another. While there are a plethora of names and personalities to remember, it never feels overwhelming or confusing. Moreci deserves extra credit for this; in a novel that features twenty tournament participants, not to mention the many Savior's companions, that's quite a difficult task.

Tobias is especially well written. He has his flaws, but he stays true to his character throughout the work. Whenever something happens that makes him question his thoughts and loyalties, he does so, and he grows as a character because of it. Likewise, his relationship with Leila, the other main character, is beautifully done here. It isn't rushed, nor is it dragged out, and they struggle with the ups and downs of life and love together in an extremely realistic fashion, even if this is a work of fantasy.

The pacing is on point throughout. There's a great balance between action and exposition, allowing for character development in between the breakneck pace of the brutal challenges. You'll want to keep reading for 'just one more' challenge, and the next thing you know you've been reading for hours at a time.

Speaking of the challenges, if you're a fan of vicious, descriptive combat scenes, then look no further. This book has it in spades. There is a -lot- of death in this book, as one would expect given the nature of the Sovereign's Tournament, and the author does a fantastic job of driving home just how deadly and unforgiving the world of Thessen can be. It's not overly gory or violent for the sake of shock value, but it's very realistic and powerful. Likewise, the violence has a real and lasting impact on the characters here (well, the ones with a conscience, at least).

The ending of the book (no spoilers here) will leave you wanting more, and feeling glad to know that this is just the first book in a series. There are still questions to answer at the end, but nothing that leaves you feeling cheated or unsatisfied with the book; there's just so much more left to discover and explore in this amazing universe.

If you're a fan of fantasy, or just good writing in general, don't miss this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book for 2018!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 24, 2018
Note: I received an advanced copy in return for an honest review.
So, hands down this book has been the best book I’ve read for 2018! I’m giving it 5 stars and I genuinely think those 5 stars are well deserved!!

I found that by the time I got to the end of the book I needed a moment to just “wow” at the ending and then after a few moments I was so thirsty for more! This is a series and there will be sequel (thank god) but as this book isn’t even out yet (I read an advance reader copy) I’ll have to wait!

But if you love fantasy, if you love and like me have been craving for a fantasy book that is a little more Adult then I promise you’ll love this, hands down.
So I’m going to start with the Romance- because that is something that’s important to me! And holy moly the romance in this book was one of the best romances I’ve ever read! It was so unbelievably healthy and adult! The characters feelings were genuine and developed naturally. Nothing was forced and most importantly no one was manipulated! I just simply adored this romance!! I think the banter between the two characters was adorable and again started off naturally- not over the top- and over time became progressively more and more adorable!

Now for the characters, this book had quite a few characters in it and what I really enjoyed was that they were all unique characters so it was easy to recognize them through their actions or speech. At no point was I confused about which character that was because I recognized them all. Furthermore, as the story developed so did the characters and not just the main characters. More and more were revealed about the other characters which made me love them even more (only to have my heart broken by their deaths… “Thanks Jenna :P ” Yes this book has quite a number of deaths in it, so be prepared to cry! There were some characters that were quite blood thirty at the beginning and I remember thinking “why don’t they just kill everyone and win and be done with it” but Jenna clears that thought up at the end. Nothing is really left unanswered.
And I think that’s what I love so much about these characters, they all have dimensions to them. Different motives, different fears, different hopes, and this gives them all genuine life.

The world building was fantastic! I’m a huge fan of being submerged in a new and completely different world and sometimes too much information about the shape of the trees and the colour of the grass can leave me a little glazed… but what I love about TSC and especially Jenna’s writing is that the world is presented to you without you really realizing that you’ve just had the world described to you! It was seamless and kept my interest throughout book because I was distracted with too much world info at once. I can still walk away and have a complete visualization of the world no problem.

And now that leads me into the plot- which was amazing! I love twists and turns in a story and Jenna has managed to weave so many twists and turns that once you’ve closed the book the only thing you can say is “bloody hell”, whilst blinking into the distance trying to comprehend the awesomeness that has been laid before you! The story went in one direction and by the end a new direction was introduced which is perfect for a sequel as you still get closure from the first story line but are now amped and excited for this new journey!
And finally the pacing was perfect! You can really tell when an author has put in a huge amount of time perfecting everything because it shows in their work! The story kept pace but was not so fast that I didn’t know what was happening and was not to slow that I was getting bored! I literally read this book fully within a day and I could only do that because my attention was constantly on the story and not drifting!
This book had be laughing (a lot- the humour in it is perfect for an adult audience ;-) ), it had me crying and mourning, it had me on the edge of my seat, it had everything! If you’re after an adult fantasy book, with a relationship you can look up to, characters you’ll love (and some you’ll mourn), pacing that’ll keep your focus and a plot that’ll have you so excited for the sequel!
