By Olga Gibbs
Hallow by Olga Gibbs digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Being one of the most formidable archangels with the power to end the world doesn't serve you well if you don't know how to use it.

Thrown into a battle of courts and factions, tangled in a web of intrigues and palatial games, naïve Ariel is surrounded by powerful angels, chasing their own agendas.

There's no one she can trust. Everyone stands to gain something from her death.

To avoid the bloody battle that Baza brought to her door at Uras, Ariel retreats back to Apkallu (Earth) to find her sister, but the Heavenly battles and intrigues she flees follow her, as Baza's immense hold on Apkallu forces Ariel and Rafe to make uncomfortable choices.

Ariel's fight for survival is far from over and it looks like it's going to be a deadly one.

“So straight after I finished Heavenwards, I had to jump straight back in with Hallow. I did not want to be apart from the characters or the action for too long! Ah, how long am I to wait for the next one though?? Anyway back to Ariel, she is still struggling with her inner demons and her good ole pal Rage is making a lot of appearances! Ariel hurt me near the opening of the book when she viciously attacked Rafe(verbally!). Now do not get me wrong, she is not coping, she is acting out and you really do forget how young she is but her words cut me like they did Rafe. If it was not for her inner turmoil after the event, despite her silly actions, I may not have forgiven her. Ariel is a “typical” struggling teenage girl, she not only has the usual angst in life, but she has to also has to try and cope with the essence of one of, if not the, most powerful angel! Not an easy task! Aside from her outbursts, she is such a strong girl and a force to be reckoned with. She is much stronger than she gives herself credit for, if only she had the belief because she has proven it over and over. Despite this, her sister is missing and she has to find her, with Rafe help. There are some touching scenes and there are some horrifying scenes, ones I do not wish to re-imagine with the lizard men – seriously terrifying! I would love to know how Olga came up with them in her head!!!!! Where I loved Heavenwards, the writing in Hallow just blows you away. Where Olga was seemingly learning her trade and characters, in Hallow she knocks it out the park with her writing and character development. For me, this was so strong, the characters are formed and you create such a bond for them, whether you like them or not!!! I honestly can not do the book any justice it deserves. I can not find the right words to entice you to read it, I just hope you do. It deserves your attention! It may be classed as a “Fantasy and a Young Adults” book but it is truly so much more, the way it is written is done in such a way that it is so realistic every sound, dialogue, smell, backdrop is brought to life.”
“This is the second book of the Celestial Creatures series and carries on where the first book, Heavenward, left off (so there will be some spoilers!). In this book, Ariel has gone into hiding with Rafe while she learns more about her powers. She then heads back to her mother's house to find her sister - but they've disappeared. They stay in a B&B on the seafront for a while, where she learns that she no longer needs human food (but still enjoys her pick n' mix!) and that fortunately, her wings pass through her clothes without ripping them. The sections about Ariel's hometown, an unnamed town in northern England, was so well written. It's incredibly evocative of summer holidays and seaside Victorian era towns that are starting to look a bit tatty. When they go to the council estate and Ariel's former home, it's incredibly vivid and I can picture it all so clearly. The writing has definitely improved on the first book. The enemies in this book, the lizard men and the Scouser, are also absolutely terrifying and are absolutely horrific. I was really gripped, not knowing how Ariel was going to get out of this mess! Ariel herself is absolutely AWFUL to Rafe in this book. Rafe has the patience of a SAINT to put up with her treatment of him. One minute she is crying and feeling guilty, the next she is shouting and raging at him. She has HUGE mood swings throughout the book. I know she is meant to be young - though I forgot that a lot - but she really frustrated me throughout the story! Rafe is so kind and loyal that I was pleased by her actions at the end, but it still frustrates me that he puts up with so much from her and yet Ariel is so unappreciative! To me, he is the character that speaks the most sense and calls out Ariel for her outrageous immature behaviour - I'm still firmly in #TeamRafe. It was great to meet Ariel's sister, Jess, though she doesn't say much in this book - I hope she has a bigger part to play later in the series. This is a fun, gripping story with some great characters. I am enjoying the series so far and I'm looking forward to seeing what Ariel does in the next one. I hope that things start to look up for Rafe though as honestly I don't know how he is still putting up with Ariel in this one!”
“Another EXCITING, action filled book in this Celestial Series by this author! Book 2 certainly didn’t disappoint! Following Ariel on her continuing journey, was jam packed full of mystical creatures, Angel battles, hiding from all the realms and self discovery! My feelings about each of the characters change in this one and I know they will in the next one to! I absolutely LOVED the ending it’s left me wanting more! Amazing writing again with the most amazing descriptions of sceneries and characters and events!”
“I loved book 1, Heavenward so jumped at the chance to be on the tour for Hallow! At the beginning we’re back on Apkallu (Earth to us!) with our protagonist Ariel, and her begrudging ‘bodyguard’ Rafe. They’re here to find Jess, Ariel’s sister to keep her safe. However, as is the case for Ariel, things don’t quite go to plan and she finds herself in numerous challenging situations, with another battle looming….. Other than that I’m giving nothing else away! Again, Olga has bought us a fabulous YA Fantasy novel which had me completely sucked in and on the edge of my seat! I love Ariel, who at times can be a proper stroppy teenager, but she’s battling with so many things; not only the fact that she has only recently found out she’s an angel, but also issues from her past and her mental health struggles. She’s a character to look up to in many ways as no matter how many times she nearly hits rock bottom, she manages to pick herself back up, dust herself off and bring the fight that’s needed. I also love Rafe, and do feel a bit sorry for him as she does give him a hard time….poor guy definitely needs a break sometimes! And we encounter the charming, but deadly Baza again…. Olga’s description is fantastic; it really brings the story to life and helps you to see it playing out in your minds eye. The fact that the story covers a number of difficult subjects (mental health, suicide ideation, abuse, neglect and deprivation) is good bearing in mind the young adults that it is aimed at, and is done so in a sensitive and appropriate way. Overall, I loved this and I can’t wait for book number three, Harbinger! If you’re looking for an action packed, fantasy then definitely check this out. I would recommend reading book one, Heavenward first (which you can get for free below whilst the tour is taking place!); I wouldn’t recommend trying to read this as a standalone as there is too much essential detail you would miss. Yet again, another great read from Olga!”
