Jason Varrone accidentally stumbled into the world of fantasy fiction in elementary school, becoming quite obsessed with the genre, and then fostered that love by delving into the realm of fantasy role-playing games. Little did he know that his desire to write was born during those carefree days as a child. It took him until adulthood to throw caution to the wind and realize his dream. By day, he is a captain of the insurance industry, a husband, and a father, all the while trying in vain to keep his houseful of cats content. By night, when the magic takes hold and the dreams begin, his mind fills with valiant knights, deadly spells, and flame-breathing dragons. When not reading or writing, he is playing the drums to his favorite '90s-era grunge songs.

FROM DEATH...
The smell of death permeates the room. The people within speak in muted tones and anticipate the end, wondering how this happened to someone they love, wishing they could be anywhere but here. A heart monitor blips and bleeps as daylight fades. You force your dry eyes open despite the layers of crust. Daggers of light from the bright fluorescents above send pain shooting to the back of your skull. A haze clouds your vision, and you try to blink it free but to no avail. You feel the softness of the sheets caress your mangled body. Someone mentions that you are awake, and dark shapes draw near as voices slowly register within your brain. Your voice comes out in a croak. Someone tells you to relax and not to worry.
Where am I? you wonder, trying to recall the events leading to this moment. How did I get here?
Your children’s eyes fill with tears as they look at you. Your mind struggles to unearth its most recent memory. Snow. Headlights. Breaking glass. Cold. Pain. You reach to touch your face but agony hits every nerve. You look down and see only horror. What was your body is now bent and twisted, wrapped in bandages that do little to hide the seeping crimson. How?
The truck. You remember the truck.
No, it can't be. It can't!
You recognize a nurse and see white walls and hear the slow beeping sound. A doctor whispers in a low voice to a family member, shaking his head. Weeping fills the room.
