Chapter 1 The Journey Begins
The weight of my fathers words hung in the air, so heavy that even I felt the pressure, despite not fully grasping what he meant. His dedication was absolute, almost reverent, as if he believed his work held the power to unlock the mysteries of the universe. Yet I struggled to see how plunging a person into total sensory deprivation and bombarding them with flashes of light at the onset of dreams could contribute to the survival of life on Earth. It was a world of abstract theories and uncharted territories that, at times, seemed as faremoved from reality as the dreamscapes he sought to explore.
Still, there was the matter of the grant the near-mythical $100,000 from Stanford University. It felt like an act of divine intervention, a validation of my fathers vision from an institution known for its pursuit of logic and reason. Even here in California, among the progressive minds of Stanford, people often cast sideways glances and whispered about his eccentricities, questioning the mind that dared to push the boundaries of perception itself. The skepticism from other scientists was almost palpable, like a haze of doubt that settled over my father’s work. They viewed his explorations into the lucid dream state as fanciful distractions from what they considered real science,
something too far removed from tangible progress. To them, the idea of funding experiments on a person’s ability to control dreams was an irresponsible gamble. They argued that the mind’s illusions, woven from fragments of past memories, had no bearing on objective reality, dismissing his work as a play within his own mind.
Yet, as he had explained to me with an intensity that stayed with me, the significance of the dream state was something vast and largely misunderstood. Seth,
he’d often say, this world what we call Earth is just one layer. There’s more, so much more. Don’t let anyone make you forget that.
His experiments were a bridge between worlds revelations in the space where consciousness could bend reality, uncovering realms untouched by waking life.
For me, the ability to become lucid
within a dream, to understand that you were in an illusion while still inside it, was profound. In that state, a person could change the dream, shape it at will, as if unlocking a hidden language in the mind. It fascinated me, though I knew it only distanced my father further from his peers, who believed he was simply reliving past memories, crafting his own world from the debris of personal experience.
There I was, trying to squeeze in some extra college credits while assisting a scientist with a reputation for teetering on the edge of reason who, by some quirk of fate, happened to be my father. He spoke of his experiments with a conviction that hinted at world-shifting revelations, like unlocking the doors to hidden dimensions. But to anyone on the outside, he seemed lost in his own mind, playing with the human brain’s imagination, never venturing beyond the boundaries of his own perceptions.
In the lab, the hum of the EEG machine was a constant, steady background sound, wires and electrodes extending like lifelines from the machine to my father’s temples. Each subtle wave on the monitor signaled that he was slipping deeper into the dream world. The moment had arrived.
Son, when the EEG shows that I’m in the REM stage of sleep,
he’d instructed with meticulous seriousness, press the green button.
His words echoed in my mind as I placed my finger over the button. With a soft click, I activated the light that would flash every second, bathing him in a subtle glow meant to tug at his awareness as he drifted through his lucid realm. And don’t forget to wake me exactly ninety minutes from the onset of sleep,
he had added, each word etched into my memory.
I glanced at the monitor, watching his brain waves spike and dip, a mysterious language only he seemed to understand. It was a strange moment—witnessing him hover on the brink of some world he believed only a few could touch, while I was the anchor, waiting in the stark reality of the lab, fingers poised to pull him back.
Here is the image capturing the intense and transformative moment on the cliffside as you realize you’re dreaming.
I looked up towards where my climbing partner had gone, my voice cracking as I yelled, I can’t make it!
Silence. He was gone, out of sight, and out of reach. Panic surged as I screamed even louder, I can’t make it!
Nothing. Only the vast emptiness of air and rock surrounded me, my heart pounding as the realization dawned—I was alone, stranded, over a hundred feet above the ground, with no ropes, no partner, and no way down. Fear gripped me, paralyzing every limb like an electric jolt, and my mind raced, I can’t move. I’m going to fall soon.
One final shout tore from my lungs, I can’t make it, and I’m going to fall!
But the answer I received was only silence. Helplessly, I looked down, unable to fathom how I’d gotten here, dangling on the rock face, inching closer to a terrible drop.
Then Flash. A bright light flooded my vision, so intense I had to shield my eyes. What…?
I whispered, feeling my surroundings shift in a surreal, almost dream-like haze. Flash. The light struck again, illuminating the rock and everything around me. Flash. Once more, the light cut through the darkness, and suddenly, I understood. I’m dreaming!
I murmured, a rush of relief washing over me as realization dawned. Another flash reassured me, lighting up my surroundings as if to echo my thought this is a dream.
The fear vanished instantly, my grip loosening as the rock face transformed from threat to marvel. The flashing light was my dream sign, and as another brilliant flash burst around me, I remembered my own freedom in this state. I laughed, pushing off from the rock, and soared into the air, gravity a
