Grams' Legacy - GAYLE M. IRWIN

    Chapter 1

Rhiann Kelly stared at the white linen handkerchief wadded in her hands as she sat in her grandmother’s favorite chair—a hickory rocker that her grandfather had created when the two were expecting their son, Rhiann’s father. That same chair had soothed her and her sister, Erin, numerous times as well. Grams last sat in it a month ago before she had become bed ridden. Rhiann ran a hand over the smooth wood, caressing the circular arm as memories filled her heart and flooded her brain.

She was fifteen when her parents died in an automobile accident. Grief had enveloped not only her and Erin, but their grandparents, who had lost their only child and his devoted wife. Grams had rocked her in this same chair at that teenage stage as they both cried, Erin at Grams’ feet. Grandpops had left the women to deal with the loss in his own man’s way – walking the Washington farm property and privately mourning. Grams and Grandpops continued raising the two girls, and when Erin left for college, again, Rhiann felt a deep loss and again, Grams comforted her from this chair. Many years later, when Grandpops passed, Grams rocked herself with Rhiann at her feet, as Erin had done twelve years before. A military wife and mother to two young children, her sister could not join them to share in-person sorrow; Erin and her family were stationed in Germany, leaving Rhiann to mourn with and to take care of Grams.

Tears drizzled from Rhiann’s eyes once again as she again recalled sitting in this same chair in this same bedroom when Grams took her final breath a week ago. Dressed in a mid-calf, simple black dress, Rhiann finally had a moment to herself. Gone were the numerous funeral reception guests. She no longer had to play hostess and listen to the endless condolences. She finally could breathe – and grieve ... alone.

As another wave of tears spilled from her eyes, Rhiann placed her head in her hands. A slight pawing on her leg caused the forty-one-year-old woman to open her eyes
