    North of the Scottish border

    Autumn 1816

    Bloody hell! Daisy cried, having pricked her finger for the third time this morning. Cursing was unladylike and her employer would slap her silly if she’d ever cursed in the presence of a customer, but the commotion outside her window was too loud to ignore.

    With a pile of dresses to complete for the shop and one wedding dress in particular for the rude and finicky young woman who’d arrived mere hours earlier from London, she threw the half-finished wedding gown over a stool beside her. She stood and rubbed her back with one hand while she stuck her bleeding finger in her mouth, then ran to see what was happening.

    Daisy shoved open the cracked window in her second floor sewing room, but she saw nothing out of the ordinary. Whatever caused the noise wasn’t in the alleyway beside the wood pile and rubbish barrel. Tendrils of smoke from the nearby blacksmith’s forge wafted into her small but comfortable workroom. No one shall be getting married this day.

    When the blacksmith went about his regular business of heating iron and creating tools and farm implements, couples wishing to marry would have to make their presence known, then wait for the air to clear.

    The sudden high pitch of a feminine scream almost drowned out the deep bellow of an angry animal. Slapping a hand to the middle of her chest, the hair on the back of Daisy’s neck stood on end. Swiping a hand beneath her long braid, she squeezed the skin and rolled her eyes. My stars! Is someone being murdered?

    Shouts and the snap of a whip, followed by another high-pitched woman’s scream, made her race across the small room, open the door, and fly down the stairs.

    Oye! Daisy, doono’ break yer neck. Ye have too much work to finish. Her employer, Mistress Kerr shook her head without raising it from where she dusted shelves near the back of the tiny shop.

    Dinna’ ye hear the commotion? I’m curious to see who is getting killed! Without slowing, Daisy sped out into the bright sunshine of mid-afternoon. She ought to
