"Schulz pens a grand mix of storytelling within Jake's Redemption. It's like fantasy meets cowboy meets romance. I enjoyed the premise of the story and how it played out. It is not always easy to blend genres, but Schulz does it remarkably. The hint of dystopian brings the Jake to Monica's doorstep, and things evolve from there. The story has a great deal of tormented souls and romance, and surviving the obstacles. Schulz certainly can write a good story. I look forward to reading more by this new author."
- Amy, Amy's Bookshelf Reviews
"Oh My! For a prequel, I didn't expect it to be so in depth and long! I actually expected it to be done in a couple hours, like a lot of other prequels. But WOW! It sucked me in and I was ready to read the next one! But have to wait. But I'm sure it'll be worth it!"
- Rachel Menzies, Amazon UK Reviewer
"While dystopian, post-apocalyptic stories are not my favored genre, I found this prequel engaging. It’s more—including a western theme, a sweet romance, and a glimmer of hope in a dismal swamp of misery—something for everyone."

Review
Jake's Redemption is a prequel to the Angel Eyes series, holding the unique ability to combine a cowboy romance with a dystopian fantasy insert to create something appealing both to romance and sci-fi readers.
In the opening scene, Jake and friend Bret are prisoners of a woman who openly mocks her former lover Bret: "How could you think any self-respecting woman would want you for anything more than your gorgeous face and hard body?" she asked, not waiting for a reply. "A decent woman would never accept you as an equal. Any woman who would is worse than the slave you will shortly become."
It's a scenario of men stripped of their power and enslaved by women, and one in which Jake Nichols suspects his life will end. Jake endures torture in captivity, but his life is not slated to conclude in this manner. When he's hired out to the beautiful Monica to help her finish building her ranch home, everything changes.
Unlike most dystopian reads, even those which include romance between characters, Jake's Redemption is firmly rooted in romance and doesn't skirt the edges like most such fantasy novels. This translates to steamy sex scenes, percolating love, and a focus on interpersonal relationships that supersedes the usual focus on survival tactics and conflict.
This isn't to say that the story is one-dimensional. Indeed, it is filled with psychological depth and insights. Jamie Schulz takes the time to explore each character's growth process, and this is reflected in passages that reveal these changing viewpoints: "There was more to him than the trembling, half-starved, pitiable man who'd first arrived, and definitely more than just his handsome face. All of it made her wonder what else lay beneath his wary, kind, and sometimes curious eyes."
Love builds predictably, but not without its obstacles, and as Jake and Monica begin to consider forging a brave new world, many things change.
It's rare to find a prequel that adequately covers the logic and progression of the novels to come. Often, such an attempt feels like an afterthought rather than holding real foresights to dovetail with the foundations of what is to come.
Jake's Redemption carefully crafts a story that doesn't feel like a manufactured tie-in, nicely pairing the feel of a romance read with the backdrop of a society where power has shifted and resulted in radical redefinitions of not just control, but love itself.
Forgiveness, trust, and control are hard gifts to give; especially in a world turned upside down. Jake and Monica are challenged on more than one level, finding that their increasing affection for one another redefines not only their perceptions, but how they feel about their potentials both individually and with one another.
As Jake begins to realize he has work to do to move from being a slave to being a powerful man in love, Monica finds him increasingly compelling. His emotional growth is very nicely portrayed, as is an evolving passion based on a different kind of power structure: "And what are you feeling?" she asked, almost breathless. His throat muscles worked as though he was having trouble swallowing. Then he took a deep breath and gave Monica her second pleasant shock of the morning. "Like I want to try to be the man I used to be. I want to stop being afraid. But I'm not sure how."
Romance readers will relish Jake's Redemption's effective, unusual blend of dystopian sci-fi and the trappings of romantic passion, but sci-fi fans looking for something different will also appreciate the story of a world that has changed so much that lovers must find new ways of defining relationships and themselves.

********************
Jamie Schulz's dystopian romance novel Jake's Redemption, a prequel to the Angel Eyes series, follows main character Jake Nichols, who was a rancher and construction worker before the Wars, a chaotic point in human history when women enslaved all men. Using drugs as a means to keep them captive and afraid, men are to be used only for their bodies, forced to be completely submissive to their Mistresses. Monica Avery, Jake's new Mistress, is desperate to find her soulmate in this new society, but seeing Jake work with his hands and mind on her land opens her heart in a way she didn't think possible.
Dystopian fiction and romance have been inexplicably and delicately linked these past few years, and, looking at today's headlines, it's no wonder authors are drawing inspiration from the news and humanizing media figures the best way they know how. By all accounts, tossing rustic cowboys into this mix just shouldn't work. But author Jamie Schulz not only weaves the diametrically opposed genres together, she crafts a thoroughly unique and engaging story that's nearly impossible to put down in Jake's Redemption. Genre-crossing walks a thin line, but Schulz melds the genres with aplomb. Even with the immense legwork that must be done to lay the rules for Schulz's complicated world, Jake, Monica, and Angel all receive deeply layered character development. Plot and character work in tandem, with the horrors of Darla contrasting with the fiery passion between Monica and Jake. Once the reader acclimates to the world Schulz has created, many of the plot points will seem familiar--but never so much so the reader can rest easy. Nothing--not even a frightening dystopia--will stop the main characters from their happy ending, but how Jake and Monica arrive there is a truly fascinating journey that readers will eagerly devour. With such a strong prequel, the rest of the Angel Eyes series looks bright.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2019Jake's Redemption is a well crafted story that sets up a series the to come. The tension of Jake's looming departure was present in everything, and added a layer of suspense and emotion that impacted the depth of each scene. The chemistry between characters was a highlight of the writing. The build and attraction between Jake and Monica is gripping and raw, and teases and twists in all the right places. The relationships that develop between the supporting characters are excellent. There is a great cast of characters in this novel that make me excited for the next book and to learn more about how their stories continue and their world expands. Schulz does an expert job of providing great detail and context without overdoing it, readers are drawn in from the start with the extreme of Jake's circumstances. There are incredibly vivid descriptions, which created a solid sense of place–I could clearly picture the ranches and the world around them.
Peppered within the main story arc were lovely moments of tension and unexpected plot twists. This was a smooth read, with depth and development of a wide range of emotions. It is hopeful, romantic, gripping, and original. I loved it and look forward to see how it all develops in the rest of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2020I will admit that I enjoyed this book, the characters, the emotions, and the trauma in this book. It did get a bit gritty and as a Christian author, there were one too many sex scenes in the book that I did have to skip over. It was mostly error free and a smooth easy read.
As an author, I don't have much time to read anymore, and this book hooked me and I was able to finish it in two days. That's the reason for my review, but I also can't really recommend it either because it does have some things in there that aren't okay -mostly sex and the intimate scenes.
But overall, this is a book by a talented and creative author. The emotions she conveyed were so realistic. I literally was feeling the emotions right along with the characters and it hooked me into the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2019If you’re looking for something different to read that will take you out of reality and drop you into a dystopian world, where women rule and the men are nothing more than, well…. Then look no further than Jamie Schulz’s “Jake’s Redemption”. So, let’s start: The world building is amazing, it’s detailed, and Ms. Schulz paints us a world where punishments are gleefully handed out and hope is hard to come by. Enter Monica and Angel, two women who completely disagree with how people (men) should be treated. And Jake, who is terrified at the prospect of being treated with a gentle touch. Let the story making continue. Ms. Schulz did a great job balancing the bleakness of life for much of the population with the very real emotions (fear, hope, loss) that exist for these characters; and I mean it when I say, they were palpable for me. Gah, I swear I could taste Jake’s despair at times (well done there!) Amazon has this story categorized in romantic fantasy, dystopian fiction, and science fiction romance, but it’s much more than that. It’s a love story that spans years, it’s a story of redemption, it’s a story of second chances, and it’s a story of love triumphing. Well, mostly. It is a prequel to what I hope will be a long running series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2020Oh my goodness! This is one of the best books I have read in years. It' s testament to how a person's inner strength can help them overcome horrific treatment at the hands of others. Jamie Schultz's storytelling is impeccable and she makes you feel her character's pain. If you want a peak at what our future may bring us, you must read this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2019I have mixed feelings about Jake’s Redemption by Jamie Schulz. I’ll be honest, when I first picked up the book, for the first chapter or two, I hated it. I found it hard to accept the world that was built for this series – because I simply can’t make myself believe that given the advantage of strength, womankind would overtake men and start treating them like slaves. The way the men in this story were treated was depraved, and I’d like to think that having been oppressed and mistreated for thousands of years, surely women would do better.
The feminist in me loathed the way the women’s strength was named “Hysterical Strength”. It brought up bad images in my head of women being confined to insane asylums because they were “hysterical” which just meant they were women that were too outspoken, or simply too inconvenient for the men in their lives, and needed to be discarded. I cannot describe how much this simple phrase bothered me. I understand why it was chosen, but I didn’t like it.
Then, the book moved on. The book morphed into a story about trauma and love, and two people trying to overcome their personal and societal issues – and it was sweet. I liked the characters. I liked their romance. The writing was easy to sink into. All of these things made me forget how much I hated the beginning of the book. I very nearly gave this a 4-star rating because of it.
…and then the end came. Chapter after chapter of time jumps, hinting that soon everything would be relieved, relationships would move forward, and things would be resolved… but they weren’t. The book ended still unfinished. The last few chapters broke this book for me. I don’t know what happened to the structure – but it just didn’t work for me.
Overall, the book was okay. Thought he cover at no way hinted at this being dystopian, the story structure was a bit off, and the world-building at times was problematic, I still enjoyed the story for the most part. It’ll be interesting to see where the series goes from here.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2020Wonderful story line. I could really feel and sympathized with Jake’s pain. Monica was a trooper with a lot of patience and so much love that she was willing to sacrifice being with him to save him. Can’t wait to read about Angel and Bret.
