      When my phone trilled I’m Too Sexy, I took my time deciding whether to answer. Hoping that long hesitation would make the decision for me. I was on a stakeout, sitting in the cab of a truck, and there wasn’t much happening, but there was always a chance something would soon. In my experience — and with my luck — that chance generally occurred when I was distracted.

      It’s amazing how many subjects do something during a quick run to a McDonald’s for a tee-tee break.

      Okay, fine. And a quick fry and pie order. I’m not the kind of person to use a bathroom without ordering something. And sitting in a vehicle watching a motel or whatever makes a person hungry. Plus, in my old career, I wasn’t allowed within fifty feet of a McDonald’s. Literally. It was in my contracts. Written by my ex-manager and still-mother, Vicki Albright. She knew I had a weakness for fries and pies. Any kind of non-saturated fat, really. 

      I was Maizie Albright—child actress and teen celebrity—before I became Maizie Albright, apprentice PI. Fries and pies were a big no-no then. Still should be. My eyes were still sea glass-green. My hair, still ginger. But my curves no longer fit into the teen detective cheer skirt. 

      But that’s what leggings are for, right?

      Anyway, I knew by the ringer who had called without even checking. Giulio Belloni. My ex-costar from my post-teen reality show, All Is Albright. Also, my ex-fiancé. But not an ex-friend. Even though he dumped me when I quit All Is Albright. Then gotten engaged to Vicki — the aforementioned ex-manager and still-mother — to advance his career. 

      She’d done it to advance the ratings. 

      But still. Ew, right? 

      They’d both moved on relationship-wise and career-wise (or both in Giulio’s case since he’d gotten engaged again in a Bachelorette-style spin-off). All’s well that ends well and all that, but Giulio wasn’t my favorite person at the moment. He also wasn’t Wyatt Nash’s favorite person. Ever. And Wyatt Nash had joined me on the stakeout. For fun. Another reason not to pick up the phone. 

      Nash was a real PI. He was also my real… 

      I can’t call a man who looks like he could double for Dwayne Johnson a boyfriend. There’s nothing boyish about him. And he wasn’t my fiancé. Not yet, anyway. (Fingers crossed!) 

      Are you going to answer that? said Nash without taking his eyes off the storage unit across the street. 

      I’m letting it roll over to voicemail, I said. It’s just Giulio.
