    It was the feast of Saint Stephen, so Stephen Dudley felt it was only right and proper that he have a feast. After all, had he been allowed to return home for the season, he would have been feasting and reveling already.

    But no.

    There was a Tudor on the throne.

    Admittedly, this Henry was superior to his father no matter what Father said. This Henry had more of a sense of humor, and even had a fair hand as a composer.

    Alas, though, he was still a Tudor. And the family had always supported the Yorks.

    It was only Grandfather’s careful maneuvering after the war and then his military brilliance against the Scots that had kept the family lands and title in the Dudley name at all. And now Father’s creative diplomacy had sent Stephen’s older brother Richard to France for the winter, where he could cement the relationships and trade agreements that would keep the family afloat and relevant when it came Richard’s turn to ascend to the title.

    And Stephen, well, Stephen was here at Exeter.

    Better than the alternative, at least.

    If Mother had had her way, Stephen would have already taken his vows and been working to build family power through the Church. But Father had been willing to listen to Stephen’s counterpoints, and allowed him to come to Exeter first.
